Chapter 253: I Owe Her For Saving My Life

Shawn supported Kathleen as they made their way through the chaos, his team covering their retreat.

"Your safety is more important. Our children need you and are waiting for you at home."

"But you can’t stay here either. These people are dangerous," she argued.

She remembered the tattoo on that man’s arm. "They are specially trained combatants from The Dark Ace, Shawn. You have to leave with me."

’Is she actually worried about me?’ Shawn paused in his track and a mischievous smile cracked up his tense face. There was no time to reel in the joy he got from seeing the concerned look on her puffy face but he couldn’t help but ask.

"Why are you suddenly so worried about my safety? Didn’t you want me dead? At least that way, I will be out of your life for good," Shawn chuckled, in spite of the dangerous situation they were in.

Before handing Kathleen over to his men to take her to safety, he wondered what was still keeping Jason and his team.

In the split second that he turned to go back inside, he saw a nozzle being aimed at Kathleen. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Kathleen!!! he yelled and reflexively lunged against her, pushing her from the line of fire.

Gripping his bleeding chest he glanced sideways and saw that Kathleen was safe, however he was not too lucky as the bullet went straight into his chest.

"Shawn!" Kathleen’s scream came barely a second later.

His gaze went back to the place where the shot had come from and he saw the person aiming again, this time he reacted faster and before he could pull his trigger, he saw the man slump down to the ground.

And suddenly everywhere went quiet. There were no more gunshots from the assailants’ side and an eerie silence descended over the place as Shawn’s men also ceased fire.

What was going on?

Amidst the confusion, a shadowy figure emerged from the smoke from the gunshots causing Kathleen’s eyes to widen in disbelief.

"No way... It’s him!"

At Kathleen’s excited cry, both Shawn and his team were baffled.

"He is the boss of the Dark Ace," Kathleen replied to Shawn’s questioning gaze. "And yes, we can trust him," she assured Shawn and his team.

It was the man Kathleen had once saved several years ago.

Shawn also noticed the sudden change in Kathleen’s attitude. There was no trace of the fear she had displayed before.

Rather, her eyes seemed to be filled with hope at the sudden appearance of the man that was supposed to be their enemy. Was there a backstory to this?

"Hold your fire! Stand down, everyone!" The boss of the Dark Ace addressed everyone in a booming voice.

Shawn cautiously lowered his weapon, one hand still clung to his chest that was covered in blood as he eyed the unexpected turn of events with suspicion.

The man approached, his expression unfathomable and bowed towards Kathleen to everyone’s astonishment.

"I owe her for saving my life. And now, we owe you for saving her life," he explained, further plunging everyone into deeper confusion.

As much as Kathleen would have loved to have a chat with the man whom she hadn’t seen for years to clarify issues, she remembered Shawn’s life was still in danger.

"I’m sorry to leave disrespectfully but my husband’s life is in danger. We need to send him to the hospital."

A corner of his eye twitched but he nodded in understanding. "Go ahead. With you by his side, I know he will be safe," The Boss of the Dark Ace said.

With a commanding gesture, the man ordered his group to stand down while Shawn left with Kathleen and his men.

As he watched them leave, his eyes were dancing with conflicting emotions.

"Hold on," they heard the boss shout as Shawn limped with Kathleen heading to where their car was parked.

Everyone stood at alert once more. Did he change his mind?

Did he deceive them into dropping their guard so that he can strike them?

As Shawn’s men warily watched him walk up to them, their hands involuntarily tightened around their guns, ready to take action if need be.

"You can use the chopper. At this rate he will hardly make it to a hospital."

’Chopper?’ thought everyone.

With a snap of his finger, his men went to work and a chopper was revealed from underneath a huge pile of hay that they had seen but paid no attention to when they arrived.

Soon, it roared to life and Shawn, Kathleen and Johnson boarded it leaving the rest to come in the car.

As they entered into the chopper, Shawn’s strength wavered as the adrenaline that was fueling it faded. He stumbled, weakened by the injury, but somehow managed to say a few words.

"Hold on Shawn, you will be fine," Kathleen comforted as she propped his head on her laps in a bid to make him more comfortable.

Contrary to the worried expression on Kathleen’s face, Shawn’s mouth turned up in a wistful smile.

"Now you can rest assured that I won’t trouble you again. But please take care of the children, they need you more."

"Screw the children," Kathleen cursed before she could stop herself. "Don’t you dare leave me, Shawn. I’m warning you."

"But you.. hate me for what I did. And you won’t for..give... me. However, I’m... ha..ppy, you... are...safe.

Having successfully rescued Kathleen, and her safety ascertained, Shawn’s eyes closed as he lost consciousness.

"I don’t hate you Shawn. I only love you!" she yelled.

"Ok, I forgive you. I can’t afford to ..."

"Shawn!" Kathleen cried out desperately at the man that had suddenly gone limp in her hands.

I only wanted him to suffer and not to die. "You can’t just die like that, you Asshole!"

Then she suddenly remembered that she was a doctor and did what she should have done in the first place.

Taking short breaths, she forced herself to calm down, took his wrist in her hand and proceeded to check his pulse.
