Chapter 244: Slept Smiling

When Shawn dropped them off at Fairview Villa, even Elvis was reluctant to part from their father.

It was not until Shawn reminded them that he would be coming to pick them up the following morning that Eleanor, who had clung to him, agreed to get down from his arms.

At the door, they were received by Mrs Carr who had a warm smile on her face when she saw Shawn and how the children behaved around him.

He was far more handsome than what she had seen on the television that day. Even with her age, she almost drooled at the sight of this Greek God in modern times.

’How is the Madam able to still resist him with all this endowment? I guess only someone as beautiful and equally matched as my Madam can dare to refuse him.

His strikingly tall frame that instantly commanded attention anywhere he entered was outstanding and made him look more responsible than all the young men that have ever wooed Kathleen.

Even the young doctor I tried to fix her with is no match compared to President Hudson’s ruddy complexion which added a touch of rugged charm to his otherwise polished appearance.

"Good evening sir, nice to finally meet you," she said in greetings.

Shawn quirked an eyebrow. "Nice to meet you too Ms," he replied, his face returning to its usual coldness, completely devoid of the warmth he showed to the children.

Mrs Carr was the least perturbed by the cold faced man who seemed to be assessing her intentions. She had already seen his other side and knew he wasn’t completely an iceberg.

With the smile still plastered on her face, she said. "I’m Mrs Carr, the children’s Nanny. Do you mind coming in for a drink?"

Oh, so she’s the nanny. No wonder she used the term: "finally." Does it mean they’ve been talking about him?

"That won’t be necessary, it’s already late. Besides, the children need to retire for the night, which might not happen anytime soon if I’m around. It’s been a hectic day for them," he politely turned the request down.

However, if Kathleen was around he would have hopped in even without an invitation.

"Yes, of course you are right," agreed Mrs Carr. She could tell from the tired looks in the children’s eyes that they needed rest.

"Goodbye sir, be careful on your way."

"I will," Shawn said, this time a bit warmly, now that he knew the role she was playing in the children’s life.

Anyone that can take care of his children to be this sweet and healthy deserves his respect. Moreover, the lady was already advanced in age, probably in her late fifties so can be considered as an elder.

If not that it was late, he would have loved to have a chat with her to know more about how his children have fared those past five years. But that can be easily arranged seeing the woman looked like the cooperative type.

He bent down to the children’s eye level, holding them each on their shoulders.

"I will see you tomorrow. Sleep well and early, so that you can wake up fresh and strong in the morning," he admonished.

"Yes, daddy. We will listen to you," Eleanor nodded.

Eleanor did not fail to plant a kiss on her father’s cheek and he, in turn, kissed their foreheads before straightening up.

"Good night daddy," they waved before stepping into the house with Mrs Carr.

As Shawn saw their backs turn away from him, something tightened in his chest and he made himself a promise.

"I will do all I can to get back my family to remain by my side. It’s so painful having to part with them every now and then."

He didn’t know until now how wonderful it was to have a family one could proudly call his own. Now that he knows, he was not going to sit still and watch them slip through his fingers.

He wanted not just the children, or just their mother, but a complete family.

"To the penthouse," he ordered when he entered the car.

As he drove back with his driver, he replayed the events of the evening, ruminating on the memories he had created with the children during the brief period they had spent together and a peaceful atmosphere settled around them in the car.

Even Carl, the driver, felt it and for once since he met the children was glad that they appeared in their boss’s life.

With this, it would be more pleasurable doing his job with peace of mind. ’A happy boss doubtless would produce happy subordinates.

Without any tension, he drove back to the penthouse, taking his time as he didn’t want to break the rare peace in the car.

But as they say, everything, good or bad, has to end, so he eventually pulled up in front of The Masters Place.

"We are here, Boss," he said.

When he got no response, he raised his eyes towards the rearview mirror and saw that his boss had drifted off to sleep, a disarming smile etched on his usually cold face.

He was speechless. This was the first time he was seeing such a scene. "The boss actually slept smiling!"

And that smile is so beautiful that he was tempted to plant a kiss on it.

Unfortunately, he was a straight guy, if not he didn’t know if he would have been able to resist the temptation.

How can life be so cruel. Packaging everything good in just one person, leaving people like him high and dry.

’What else can I do but be grateful for the little I have.’

He took a look at himself in the mirror and still felt encouraged by his appearance.

At least he could still make the list of top fifty handsome guys in Baltimore with his looks.

After waiting for about ten minutes, he decided to wake the sleeping angel. He also needed to retire for the night and catch a good sleep. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
