Chapter 88: Predators in the Dark

Zeke closed his mouth over the wound with more defiance than obedience, and his teeth sank into the open flesh. Warm blood touched and ran down his throat - but describing the feeling as warm was mundane.

Sylas’s blood tasted like scorched starlight. Heat rolled down his throat, dangerously alive, and a shockwave ran through him as he took the first mouthful.

He almost barked at the feeling, and his heartbeat surged. His closed eyes opened and his vision sharpened. He could feel the blood already circulating through his body, setting every inch of it alive again.

He drank even deeper.

"Slow," Sylas warned, "Or it’ll really burn you from inside,"

Zeke felt like Ice and fire were fighting inside his chest, and his wolf, Moon howled inside of him like it had been starved and was just tasting meat for the first time.

All the fatigue and pain vanished, and his claws extended under his command. His dull senses came back, and every heartbeat of any creature lurking around thudded in his head.

Zeke pulled away only when the fire felt bearable. He felt like if he stayed any longer, he would end up forgetting himself and drinking every drop he could get.

Zeke looked up at Sylas, his eyes already glowing molten gold. The blood of an Alpha was said to possess healing powers, but this was far beyond that.

Sylas simply wiped his wrist which was already closing.

"Don’t ask questions," Sylas said, seeing the raw curiosity in Zeke’s glowing eyes, "We need to stop her before she gets to the veil. Are you ready?"

Zeke’s head lifted sharply, "Let’s go,"

They both took off running toward the Hallow. Zeke’s wolf surged with the ignited power, growling inside of him and ready to transform at any moment.

The moment they crossed into the forest, Zeke’s senses ripped the night open into layers.

Every bizarre nature of the forest burrowed into his head, and he watched quietly.

What the hell was this place? The light kept thinning the further they walked in, and the forest felt alive. It was almost as if everything was watching him, and he could feel it crawling on his skin.

Beside him, Sylas looked as calm as ever. As the darkness took over, the shadows around him tightened even more. And he moved like someone who’s been here a lot of times. He knew the exact way, and Zeke followed.

"Watch out for the Vines," Sylas whispered to Zeke.

The mist that had spilt from the forest began to thicken, curling around their ankles. Sylas took one look at them, and then his eyes sharpened.

They ran for a while, before Zeke picked up that ominous presence. He could hear her footsteps, and a brutal grin touched his lips, "I can feel her,"

"She can feel us too," Sylas whispered, "You’re to hold her down enough for me to kickstart her heart. As long as she’s holding that pendant, Thad should awaken,"

’Kickstart her heart’ Zeke had been curious ever since Sylas mentioned it. What exactly what he going to do to achieve that? And it’s already been a while since Hellcat died. Could her heart really come back alive?

All he could do was hold onto hope.

Moreover, even if it doesn’t work, they’ll still have to take down that demon before she unlocks her mate.

"How exactly do I pin her down? What are a demon’s strengths and weaknesses?"

"They’re a lot more powerful than Werewolves,"

Zeke glanced at Sylas, "Weakness?!"

"None,"

"What?" Zeke growled, "How are we supposed to defeat something that doesn’t have a weakness?"

"You’ll pin it down with everything you’ve got, Zeke. We are not here to kill anything, remember?!"

Of course, he knew that. He was even sure he could look at Hellcat’s body without his heart aching. But to do this, he was pretty sure they were gonna have to injure his body in some way, especially when it comes to pinning it down.

"There’s a ditch over there," Sylas pointed at a small clearing up ahead, "It leads us straight to the Veil. That must be where she is right now,"

They hastened, kicking up speed and both jumped into the large hole. It led them down, and they fell for almost twenty seconds, landing strongly on their feet.

The air felt thicker, and Zeke almost choked from the insane smell of rot and decay here. The trees were even worse than the ones up here, and it was darker than the rest of the forest.

Something was here.

Looking up, he saw Hellcat standing there, her void eyes staring back at them with her hands crossed over her chest.

A few feet away from her was something like a large tear in the air, just hanging. The dark mist that had awoken Hellcat before leaked from it, and there was a shadow standing behind it.

The Veil.

"You followed me," She said

Zeke’s answer was a growl, "You think I’d let you just walk off with her?"

She let out a smile that didn’t reach her void-black eyes, "This body moves because I allow it," she said, her voice soft like fresh graves, "What makes you believe you’re owed its return?"

Zeke’s molars ground together, gold burning in his gaze, "Because he wasn’t yours to take."

Low laughter slipped from her mouth, "Oh, wolf. Everything in this forest belongs to power. Not love. Not loyalty. Power." She lifted the pendant between two fingers and the air trembled like an exhale from hell itself, then turned back to Zeke, "Moreover, why do you keep referring to her as a ’he’? Is it because she’s wearing a male form right now?"

Zeke’s brows furrowed. What did that mean?

She noticed the look, "You don’t know?"

Sylas finally spoke, voice cold as the shadows coiling around him, "Whatever it is you are, you don’t belong here,"

The demon’s attention slid to him, and that intriguing look returned, "If I don’t belong here, Erebos, you don’t belong here either,"

Zeke took a step forward, fists shaking, "You’re going to leave that body. One way or another,"

She tilted her head, studying him like a wolf studying a wounded deer, "You threaten me inside this forest?" Her voice dipped into something sharper, "You walk into my mouth and complain about the teeth?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Zeke’s chest heaved, power brewing inside his skin, "You don’t scare me,"

"Oh?" She drifted closer, "But I can taste your fear from here. Sharp. Desperate. Loyal enough to choke on,"

Zeke lunged half a step toward her, but Sylas’s arm snapped out and grabbed him before he could do anything rash.

The demon smiled wider, pleased, "I like you angry," she whispered, "It makes the heart easier to break later,"

Sylas stepped forward once, and the temperature dropped, "You’re not opening that Veil,"

She blinked slowly, "Why are you so disturbed about it, Erebos? It’s not like anything is going to happen to you once he’s out. I mean, I know you hate each other but it’s only the three of us that exist. He won’t just kill you off,"

Sylas’s gaze didn’t change, "Unfortunately, I and the crazy wolf here have the same goal, "

"You think you can stop me?" She took another step forward.

Sylas’s eyes glowed like glacial fire, "I know we can,"

Her eyes danced with delight, "Then come," She challenged, "Show me how wolves beg for what they can’t save,"

The Veil behind her pulsed. Slow, hungry, and waiting.

Zeke’s claws slid free, and he snarled powerfully as a large red wolf emerged, his clothes tearing into pieces around him.

Sylas tossed his glasses away, and the vines quickly slithered around it

The talking was over.
