Chapter 210: Before the Power Woke

The moment Theo stepped forward, Cain’s hand dropped and the room exploded.

The first wolf lunged without warning, and Theo caught sight of just a blur of grey muscle and snapping jaws aimed straight for her throat. She ducked on instinct, its claws tearing free as she rolled beneath him.

She felt fur ripping under her fingers as she slashed upward, the force of it jolting her arm to the bone. The wolf yelped, crashing into a pillar behind her with a sickening crack, but there was no time to register it as two more came for her at once.

One from the left, and the other from behind.

She spun and had just barely blocked the first with her forearm when teeth sank into her flesh. Pain flared up her body as she screamed through clenched teeth, quickly driving her knee up into his chest. He flew back, but the second wolf’s weight slammed into her spine half a second later, sending her skidding across the polished stone floor.

Her breath burst from her lungs, and before she could take her first step to getting up, claws raked across her side.

Blood sprayed.

A sharp, feral sound tore of pain and fury tore from her throat, and Theo twisted violently, sinking her teeth into the wolf’s shoulder. It tasted like iron and something bigger, but he quickly roared and tore free - but not before she ripped out a huge part of his skin.

Four wolves now circled her, pacing in a loose ring with their eyes locked on her. The others lingered farther back, watching and waiting for the smallest opportunity.

*They’re rotating,* Seraphina hissed inside her, * They’re very experienced, Dang it!*

Theo spat out the torn flesh along with some blood, then bared her teeth at them, "Come on," she growled. "Don’t be shy,"

They came, and they did so strategically.

One lunged low, forcing her to jump out of the way, but the other snapped midair, grazing her calf as she landed badly, her ankle screaming in protest. She barely rolled in time to avoid having her throat torn out by another.

Pain stacked on pain with every move she made. Her arms stung with pain, and her lungs felt too small to carry her heavy, shallow breaths.

A wolf slammed into her side hard enough to throw her back, and Theo hit the wall with a terrible crack and slid down, her vision blurring. Before she could move, teeth closed around her forearm and shook.

A hot scream ripped out of her as the teeth sank into her bone, tears spilling out of her eyes.

Theo grabbed the wolf’s ears with her free hand and out of desperation for the pain to stop, smashed her forehead into his skull again and again until something gave. He released her with a broken whine and collapsed, his body twitching.

Another was already there and claws tore across her back. Her knees hit the floor as she felt something between bone and muscle snap, and she coughed out even more blood, splattering over the floor.

’Get up,’ she told herself, ’Get up or they’ll kill Ava. They’ll kill him. They’ll—’

*Theo, no—* Seraphina yelled, her voice meek but heavy with desperation, *Don’t close your eyes. You cannot afford to close your eyes!*

A memory surgery from the back of her mind.

She was quite small and seemed to be crawling on all fours. Her mother’s bright eyes shone in front of her, and baby Theo giggled, waving a little rose flower in one hand.

The colour fits your hair so perfectly,’ Her mother said and fixed one of the flowers over the crook of her ear and gave her a soft smile, ’You’re my little rose’ She added.

Theo roared and surged upward with everything she had left. She caught the next wolf mid-leap, and momentum carried them both into a brutal collision.

They rolled, snarling, biting, and tearing at one another. She clawed blindly and ripped open his stomach till she felt warmth spilling over her hands.

He went still beneath her.

For half a second, the room went quiet.

Theo stood in the centre of the carnage, her chest heaving with every forced breath. Blood soaked every inch of her, and her vision tunnelled.

How many? she wondered dimly.

Then she felt it.

A subtle shift.

The wolves had stopped pacing and decided to spread out instead.

Six left.

They had changed tactics.

Two rushed her from the front while another circled wide. She braced, intercepting the first, only for the second to fake and retreat while the third hit her from behind like a freight train.

Her head snapped forward, and she tasted stone on her tongue.

She went down hard and didn’t know when she even hit the floor before claws pinned her shoulders. Teeth snapped inches from her neck as another wolf joined, locking her legs in place. She thrashed, screamed, and tried to reach for something.

Anything.

But a fourth wolf landed on her chest, and the weight crushed the air from her lungs.

Theo gasped soundlessly as she watched through a teary, bloody, and blurry vision as jaws closed around her throat.

’This is it,’ a distant part of her thought, ’This is where it ends,’

Her fingers scrabbled uselessly against the floor.

Then, Ava’s face flashed in her mind.

Ava!

Theo snapped, and a violent surge ripped through her once more. She slammed her forehead upward, smashing it into the wolf’s jaw. As it recoiled, she twisted violently, dislocating her own shoulder just to escape the hold, and sank her claws into the wolf pinning her legs, ripping until she forced him to back away.

She staggered upright again, staring at everything with blood dripping from her eyes.

Her left arm hung uselessly, and blood poured down her neck.

The remaining wolves didn’t rush this time.

They waited, because she looked too wounded to continue. Which means she would soon collapse. And that would be the perfect time to come in.

At the back of her head, Theo heard Cain’s voice drifting lazily through the room, "Impressive," he was saying, "But you’re slowing down,"

Theo swayed on her feet.

Her vision doubled, even worse than before and her knees buckled. She dropped to one knee, trying to hold on.

’Not yet,’ She begged silently, ’Please. Not yet,’

The wolves lunged, and Theo couldn’t move as she completely fell forward.

Because she had nothing left to give.
