Chapter 200: The Letter

Two maids waited in front of her room when she arrived.

Cain had sent them, along with a first aid kit.

They didn’t say anything as they worked on her body, helping her to stop the bleeding and cover up the wounds. When they were done, they packed up and left silently.

Not long after, breakfast arrived. She watched as they pushed the wheels into her room, unveiled the food and left again. The aroma was tempting, but Theo wasn’t hungry.

She barely eaten since she came here. And she was starving.

No sleep, and barely any food. She feared that if she closed her eyes and let herself finally succumb to sleep, it would be detrimental, especially with Seraphina not able to look out for her while she was asleep.

As for the food, Theo felt like it might be poisoned.

She finished cleaning up and changed her clothes into something more comfortable. Her knees were a bit dislocated, forcing her to limp around the room.

She had planned to explore this castle now that Cain’s dogs weren’t around, and that was exactly what she would do.

*You can’t move freely with that knee. Fix it back,*

Theo blinked, *And how am I supposed to do that?* 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

*Shove it back into position* Seraphina said.

Theo looked down at her leg, then laughed in disbelief, "You’re joking,"

*The pain would only get worse with time if you don’t. Sit on your bed, grit your teeth, grab your knee and shove that bone back to its position*

*Uhmmm, did you forget about the part where it would hurt really bad?! I can’t do that*

*Yes, you can. Now go sit on the bed, I’ll guide you,*

Theo stared at her knee for another second, then blew out a shaky breath, "Fantastic," she muttered, "My wolf is officially insane."

*Sit. Now,* Seraphina snapped, sharper than she’d sounded in days.

That alone made Theo listen.

She limped back to the bed and sat, easing her weight down carefully. The movement sent a sharp bolt of pain up her thigh and she hissed through her teeth, fingers clutching the sheets.

*Good,* Seraphina said grimly. *Now pull your leg straight,*

Theo did, inch by inch, until her knee was locked out in front of her. It felt swollen, and her hands hovered uselessly above it.

*I can’t,* She whispered. *I really can’t,*

*You can,* Seraphina insisted, her tone softer now, * You’ve survived worse than this,*

Theo swallowed. Her palms were slick with sweat as she wrapped both hands around her knee, fingers digging into bruised skin. The pain was immediate, blinding even before she did anything.

*On three,* Seraphina said. *One—*

*Wait—*

*Two—*

Theo sucked in a breath so deep it burned her lungs.

*Three.*

She bit down on her tongue and shoved. A dull, sickening pop echoed too loudly in the room.

Quickly, she buried her face into the pillow to muffle her scream as white-hot pain exploded through her leg, stealing the air from her lungs.

For a terrifying second, she thought she might pass out, but she forced herself to stay present, her nails biting into her palms, and teeth clenched so hard her jaw ached.

Then, the severity of the pain began to decrease.

It felt more settled than before.

When she moved it, her knee throbbed angrily, but it held better than before too.

She laughed weakly, tears streaking down her temples, *I hate you,* she whispered.

*You love me,* Seraphina replied, exhaustion heavy in her voice, *And you did good,*

Theo lay there for a few seconds longer, letting the tremors pass. When she finally sat up again, her hands were steadier. Her leg still hurt like hell, but it would carry her.

Good enough.

She pushed herself to her feet, testing her weight. The limb remained, but the pain was much more manageable.

"Alright," she murmured, grabbing a dark cloak from the back of a chair and pulling it on, "Let’s see what kind of monster keeps a house this quiet,"

*Be careful,* Seraphina warned. *This place isn’t just stone and corridors,*

*I know,* Theo said, moving toward the door. *That’s why I’m going.*

She cracked it open and listened for confirmation. No Jarred. No Rex. No footsteps lurking just beyond the threshold.

Theo slipped out into the hallway, closing the door softly behind her.

The castle stretched before her. It was made of long, polished corridors lit by high windows and flickering wall sconces. Every sound felt amplified, like the whisper of her boots, and the slow rhythm of her breathing.

She chose a direction at random and walked.

As she moved down, Seraphina stirred inside of her.

*What’s wrong?* Theo asked.

*I thought I felt something* She said.

*What?*

*I’m not sure,* Seraphina said, *But it’s gone now. You can keep on going,*

She moved deeper into the mansion instead, limping softly through corridors that felt less like hallways and more like arteries. The maids quieted as she walked by, and the guards gave her one glance and looked away.

Weird.

The farther she went from the living quarters, the quieter the castle became. At some point, there were no more servants or guards.

Just stone and silence.

She stopped in front of a narrow door set into the wall, almost hidden between two towering bookshelves built straight into the stone. There was no lock, just a simple iron handle worn smooth by time.

She pushed it open and walked inside.

The room beyond was small and low-ceilinged, nothing like the grandeur of the rest of the mansion. A single desk sat beneath a high window, its surface empty except for a thin layer of dust.

Shelves lined the walls, filled not with weapons or artefacts, but with parchment, scrolls, and old leather-bound journals.

This was an archive.

Theo stepped inside slowly, her heartbeat loud in her ears. Her fingers trailed over the spines of the books as she passed, reading fragments of titles etched in faded ink.

Blood treaties.

Territorial accords.

Veil studies.

Her stomach tightened.

At the desk lay a thin folder, set apart from the others as if it had been left there deliberately. She stared at it suspiciously. Was Cain doing this intentionally? Is that why the guards didn’t bother to stop her?

Theo hesitated, then opened it.

The first page was a formal document, aged and yellowed, its edges frayed. The language was old, ceremonial, written in a careful, precise hand.

She read the first line.

’This accord is entered willingly and without coercion.’

Her breath caught. What the hell was this?!

Her eyes dropped to the signatures at the bottom of the page.

Cain Pendragon.

And beneath it, was the name ’Daphne Blackthorn,’

Theo’s hands began to shake, "No," she whispered. "No, no, no..."

She knew that handwriting. She’d spent more time with her mother than anyone else while she was young, so she was able to recognise her handwriting. The slight slant to the right. The way certain letters were looped more carefully than others.

Quickly, she flipped to the next page.

It wasn’t as formal as the first, this one was personal.

A letter.

Theo swallowed hard before she began reading...
