Chapter 183: The Devil Steps in

Dust rose, paws struck, and claws slashed across skin like a sword.

Sylas held her against his chest. She looked terrible, barely holding on. And her wolf... its presence was also weak. What the hell happened while he was gone?

All these while he planned against Cain while absorbing the shards, he thought Cain would remain in the west. The dinner with the council was supposed to last for a while, but Cain had used that as a distraction.

Made everyone think he was still there.

While he came to Gravemont. For Theodora.

Sylas was mad at himself for being so late. By the time he realised Cain was on his way here, it was already too late, hence their late arrival. Cain’s forces had hijacked everything, and even though they came for just one person, they had left destruction in their wake.

Sylas had miscalculated. Cain had been smarter.

He turned to Zeke and the female wolf, "Take both of them away from here," Sylas ordered the moment Wolfe dropped down next to him.

Then, he adjusted his hold on Theo, lifting her securely into his arms.

Theo lifted her eyes to him, and couldn’t help but feel that there was something very different about him. Shadows always clung to him like a second skin, but tonight, they clung to him like his first skin.

And it didn’t just follow him, it had melted into him.

Almost like...they had become one.

And his eyes that were the usual blue were now silver. A dark, heavy silver that seemed almost unreal.

Sylas himself right now was unreal. Even his aura was completely different and much more powerful than before.

What happened to him while he was gone?

"Don’t worry," He said as he turned around, "I’ll get you to safety now,"

"Don’t touch me!" Zeke snarled from behind as he slapped Wolfe’s hands away.

His eyes were on Sylas, and he forced himself to stand up. He looked like he was going to throw up anytime, and he was even worse than before. His eyes were bloodshot from pain, and he grabbed the wall for support as he forced his legs to hold his weight.

"Drop her," Zeke said, glaring at Sylas, "We don’t need your false protection, warden,"

Sylas sighed, "Wolfe, bring him with us,"

"I said don’t touch me!" Zeke’s eyes snapped into a pulsing orange, and Wolfe froze midway.

"Now, drop her before I make you," Zeke took a step toward, stopping to catch his breath.

"Zeke," Theo looked up, "He’s here to help,"

"I don’t care," Zeke said, "I would never accept help from him, and you know it!"

"We don’t have a choice right now!" She said desperately, "I can’t fight, my wolf- she...," Theo paused, "She became weak after what I attempted, and I don’t know how long I can protect you. We need all the help we can get, and Sylas is here just for that,"

"Then why is he holding you as if he owns you?" Zeke arched a brow, "I’m weak, Hellcat, not blind,"

"What the hell does it matter right now?" She cried back, "We almost died, Zeke. And Sylas is my mate!"

Zeke didn’t seem to want to listen, "I won’t say it for the third time, warden. Drop her!" He uttered dangerously.

"No," Sylas replied.

Theo quickly pushed herself to her feet, ignoring the sting of pain in the palm of her foot. She quickly placed herself between Zeke and Sylas before Zeke could collide with him.

"No!" She exclaimed, "Stop it, Zeke. Please, stop it!"

"Are you protecting him?" Zeke raged, stopping right in front of her. He had a look between betrayal and anger, and his sharp breaths were now louder than his voice.

"No, he’s the one trying to help us. Why can’t you understand that?"

"Because he is not to be trusted, that’s why!!" Zeke spat back, eyes shuddering, "Can’t you feel it? Can’t you tell he’s even more different than he was before?! Don’t you see the darkness he’s accepted?! He was barely hanging onto being a wolf in the past, and right now... Zeke looked up at Sylas, "He’s become the one thing he should never be!"

"That doesn’t make him the enemy!"

"Yes, it does!"

"So you want us killed? You want us to stay here till Cain arrives and we are all caught?" She was really trying to reason with him, but his hatred for Sylas was even more deeply rooted than she remembered. He said everything with the way he was glaring at Sylas, "No matter how much it doesn’t sit well with you, it’s better than staying here and having to face Cain! Gravemont isn’t safe anymore! That one-eyed giant had every intent of killing you. We can’t wait for someone more powerful to show up here, we have to escape!"

"I can feel him coming," Ava said shakily from behind as she changed back to her human form, "We need to get out of here, now,"

"You hear that?" Theo cried back at Zeke, "We need to go, and we need to go now!"

She turned back to Sylas and looked at his face. Whatever he did to himself, they would talk about it at a later time. But she knew he wouldn’t hurt them.

Zeke would have to put his anger aside again and accept what is being handed to him.

"You’re right," He replied, "You’re too weak to stay here, and I’m only wasting time by being like this. You all should just go, I’ll find my own way,"

Theo whirled back to him, "Hell, no! I’m not going anywhere without you!" She cried.

"You sure you don’t wanna leave right now and go make out with the warden?"

Now he was just enraging her, "Please, Zeke. What exactly do you expect me to do? I already told you, I’m not going to reject any of you. So just stop!"

"Then, go," He whispered, then turned around.

"Are you...," Her eyes burned with tears, "Are you asking me to make a choice right now?!"

Sue turned back to Sylas, expecting him to say something. He didn’t. He also held that conviction in his eyes; after all, none of them were fans of sharing.

Especially not her.

Sylas had seen the mark on her neck the moment he appeared in front of her, coupled with the fact that Zeke’s scent was all over her.

There was no doubt about it. They had mated.

"Oh my God," She wailed, "Are you both being serious right now?"

"Wolfe," Sylas called, "Take the females away from here. I’ll handle Pendragon,"

"No, you won’t," Theo shook her head, "That’s not a good idea. I don’t trust leaving you both alone,"

"Then I’ll forcefully take both of you out of here!"

Before either could blink, Sylas had become a blur again and Theo felt herself moving.

But the blur ended too soon, accompanied by a roar of anger, right before Zeke tore out of Sylas’s hold and threw himself back.

"Fucking don’t touch me!" He spat, as he fell on his back.

The movement stopped instantly, and Theo found herself standing in the school courtyard, with Zeke bent over a few feet away, vomiting again.

"Zeke!" She cried, hauling herself out of Sylas’s grip as she ran over to meet him.

"Venom...," She heard Sylas call out softly behind, his arms empty from where she pulled away from him.

"Zeke!" She was almost by his side, extending her arm to touch him. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

A pressure descended that did not belong to any of them, and a low chuckle echoed through the courtyard.

Every head snapped up as the man standing behind the boulder walked into plain sight, his eyes gleaming with cruel amusement, his presence swallowing the space whole.

"Well," His deep voice drawled smoothly and wickedly as poison poured into wine, "Would you look at that? You all came right to me,"
