Chapter 168: Who’s gonna play Lyra?!

When Ava walked into the changing room, everyone kept glancing weirdly at her. At first, she thought the girls were just glaring because she had been given Lyra’s character, but then she only understood what the mischievous looks were about when she saw her silver dress.

It was all torn up.

Like they had released an animal to tear it all to pieces. It wasn’t salvageable at all.

Ava touched the fabric, hoping it wasn’t real. Did Theo do this?

Just then, Heather and her friends circled Ava like wolves, their eyes glinting with cruelty. She was already wearing the other costume she had prepared for Lyra’s part, and it looked so similar to Ava’s.

"Seriously, Ava," Heather said, her voice saccharine and slow, "Did you do this to your own costume? Or are you just naturally... destructive?" She gestured at the ruined dress, letting her fingers drag over the torn fabric.

Gina snickered loudly, "I mean, wow. It’s like a dog got into it, or maybe just you. Totally your vibe, Ava,"

The other girls leaned in, whispering cruelly to one another, but loud enough for Ava to hear every mocking word.

Ava’s fingers trembled on the fabric. She had been meek around people like Heather, because her family could easily destroy hers. She had let them push her around, but this...this was deep.

Heather leaned closer, and her smile sharpened, "And you know," She whispered loud enough for Ava to hear, "There’s no actual reason for you to go out there and pretend to be Lyra. No one is watching you, Ava. And the boyfriend you looked forward to seeing her at Gravemont...hmmm, Ouch! It must hurt, right? But then, I guess you’re both losers. The loser couple,"

Ava’s eyes snapped. The words cut through her like fire, and her hands balled into fists. "You don’t get to talk about him!" she spat, her voice low and dangerous.

"Oh, you gonna do something about it?" Heather was a bit surprised and amused too, her voice sharp with threat, "Please, make me laugh. Or do you just cry like you always do?"

Ava’s temper finally snapped, and she lunged. Hair was grabbed, hands clawed, and suddenly the air in the changing room was electric with chaos.

Heather screamed as Ava pulled at her hair. Gina swung a claw, cutting Ava across the shoulder. Ava hissed from pain, then she sent out a kick, leaving her sprawling.

One of Heather’s friends tried to tackle her from behind. Ava twisted and threw her off, turning on the next girl, fists raining down in a flurry she had never allowed herself before.

Then, Ava grabbed Heather’s dress and turned her fury onto it. Heather screamed as her expensive costume was ripped right in front of her eyes by what looked like the crazy version of Ava.

More hair was pulled, collars were grabbed, screams and curses filled the room. The other girls didn’t bother to separate them and only jumped out of the way before their makeup or dress got ruined.

The mirrors rattled with the chaos, more dresses were ripped and shoes flew across the floor.

Ava’s anger fueled her strength. She was taking all of them at once, swinging and dodging with a ferocity they had never expected. Heather shrieked as Ava yanked her hair, slamming her against the wall. Gina fell to the floor with a thud after a sharp kick to her stomach.

It was a whirlwind of fists, hair, and curses until finally, the door burst open.

"Enough!" shouted Jocelyn as she strode into the room with a swollen nose.

She grabbed Heather by the arm and dragged her back, then yanked Gina and the others toward the door.

Ava stood in the middle of the wreckage, her chest heaving, and her eyes burning.

"She—she started it!" Heather wailed, tugging at her dishevelled hair, "She attacked us!"

Gina nodded vigorously, "Yeah! Ava’s insane! She went crazy!"

Ava opened her mouth to defend herself, but the room was already spinning around her with judgment.

Jocelyn’s eyes flicked to her. They were cold and angry. She was still reeling from the punch she had received not too long ago, "Ava, this is completely unacceptable. You are officially removed from the play!"

Ava’s heart sank, rage mixing with disbelief. The other girls smirked, and Heather’s triumphant smile blazed, untouched by the chaos she had caused.

Heather smirked, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "Don’t cry too hard, Ava. You’ll get over it. Eventually,"

Of course, Jocelyn didn’t even wait to hear the full story. She would take Heather’s side no matter what, because Heather was from a powerful family and she was not. That was always how the world has worked.

Ava lifted her chin up. She wasn’t going to beg anyone. And she was more than glad to see her claws painting bloody marks over Heather’s skin.

"Your dress was beautiful," Ava said as she walked past Heather, "I hope you prepared a backup dress, or else... None of us can be Lyra," She smirked.

Heather looked down at her dress again. It was totally ruined!

"Ava!!!" She shrieked in agony and fury.

"Oops," Ava smirked in triumph this time before she walked out of the room.

There was this uplifting, exciting and prideful feeling in her chest, and she didn’t feel so small anymore. She almost felt like she was floating, even though her body was still trembling from the fight.

Yes. This was exactly what it felt like to be the one laughing last.

She left the Hall immediately. The play was going to start in less than a minute, and Lyra was supposed to show up in the third scene. Jocelyn would have to look for a way to fix that.

She was done with the play!

As Ava walked out, she saw a familiar figure pressed to the wall in a corner muttering indifferent words under her breath. What the hell was with Theo and corners anyway?

"You feel like you just killed someone," Ava commented as she walked up to her.

Theo kept banging her forehead against the concrete, still muttering curses to herself.

"Aren’t you supposed to be in there? You know, Aeron appears in the second scene,"

Theo finally looked up, and Ava almost screamed, startled at what she saw. It looked as if all the blood had been drained from Theo’s face, and her eyes were almost lifeless.

"Tonight’s my last day at Gravemont," She uttered, sounding like there was no hope left for her.

"Why do you say that?"

Theo grabbed her hair and pulled, "Because I’m expecting the Voss family to come for me. If they don’t come, well, I expect that by the end of tonight unfailingly, Heather would have told the Commandant that I’m a girl because I refused to ruin your dress, and Jocelyn would have reported that I punched her...in the nose,"

Ava was stunned. She quickly pressed a palm over her mouth before her laugh would escape, "You’re the reason her nose looks disfigured?"

"I lost my temper," Theo groaned and resumed slamming her forehead on the concrete, "My days at Gravemont are over!" Then, she paused and looked at Ava, "Aren’t you supposed to be getting ready for your first scene? Why are you out here?!"

"Not anymore," She sighed, "I kind of got into a fight with Heather for ruining my dress and Jocelyn kicked me out of the play,"

"You fought with Heather?" Theo thought the bruises on Ava’s face were just another one-sided hit, but this time they looked like prideful marks, and suddenly Theo was clapping and jumping, "You finally stood up to her,"

"You were right," Heather smiled, "It felt so good. I should have done this much earlier," 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"Wait," Theo paused again, "Does this mean Heather would be Lyra tonight?"

Ava snickered this time, "I ruined her little replica of my dress. No one’s gonna be Lyra tonight,"

"What??" Theo looked distressed, "If no one’s gonna be Lyra, the play won’t go on. When they get to the scene Lyra’s supposed show up, you guys are just gonna leave Zeke standing there alone!"

"Well, I don’t know what to do. I didn’t think about that. Maybe they’re gonna cancel it,"

"But everyone worked so hard for this play. Plus, I don’t think Gravemont’s gonna allow anything to get cancelled,"

"There are no dresses for Lyra anymore. Unless someone can sew a dress at lightning speed or sprout a silver dress out of their skin," Ava said jokingly.

But it wasn’t a joke to Theo...

*Remember I can make clothes out of my silver fur?* It was the first time Seraphina was talking to her again ever since she admitted her past life, *If you really wanna save the play... Why not play Lyra’s character with my fur as your dress?*
