Chapter 124: Helmets and Heartache

Dark clouds slowly gathered in the sky, and the wind had picked up. She didn’t move from where she laid on the leaves, sobbing quietly to herself.

The sound of roaring engines caught her ears from a distance, and she stood up and burst into a run at her fastest speed.

The trees around her blurred as she sped past every last one of them, and only stopped herself when she appeared out of the forest. She stood at a distance, watching from behind as Zeke rode away on his bike.

She saw him glance back for a second, then he disappeared down the field, heading for the deserted road. From the looks of it, he was going back to Gravemont today.

There was no use staying here any longer. She would go anywhere he goes.

She walked down the field for a while before she finally burst through the deserted road. By then, the wind had picked up a lot and dark clouds filled every inch of the sky as she looked up.

Alone, she kept walking down the road. Running was another option, but she didn’t want to. She was intentionally waiting for the rain to soak her, so she could let the tears pour even more and no one would know.

When the rain finally started, it was violent, and every drop landed hard. Thunder struck somewhere behind, and she raised her head to the sky and stared at the incoming drops.

This was exactly what she needed.

She hadn’t walked for an hour when she heard the sound of a bike coming up the road. At first, she thought it was another thunder, but as it got closer, the headlights flashed, and she looked up at the machine.

Zeke stopped right in front of her, wearing his helmet.

She held her breath.

Like last time, he tossed her a helmet and she caught it.

She looked up at him in shock, wondering if this was real. It was, but he wasn’t looking at her still. His gaze was still fixed on the road, and he was clutching the handles tighter than usual.

She put on the helmet and climbed onto the back. She didn’t know if she was allowed to wrap her arms around his back until the machine lurched forward, and she was forced to hold him.

There was this bitter awkwardness between them, and she felt him tense against her touch. She slowly lightened her grip so he would feel more... comfortable.

It didn’t work.

Zeke abruptly turned the motorbike around and zoomed down the road once again. She tried not to move at first, but eventually rested her cheek on his back. She felt so safe and familiar, but he probably didn’t feel the same.

The ride was only filled with the sound of raindrops hitting their helmets. They rode for hours, on the path back to school. The rain didn’t stop, it didn’t even lessen its force on them.

As they arrived at the gates, Theo felt the air shift once again. The aura of Alpha wolves poured out like shockwaves, and she lifted her head and stared at the towering gate and the fence surrounding the school.

But this time, there were no goosebumps like the first time she had walked in here. There was only a deep sense of regret for the people she had hurt.

Zeke stopped the moment he drove past the gate, and his bike came to a halt.

He didn’t even need to speak for her to know what he meant. Without a word, she dropped down from the bike and gave him his helmet.

She watched as he drove away.

Then, she looked around. It was not just them, but others were also returning. It was the last day of the break.

She stared again. She couldn’t believe she was really back here. Back where Cain wanted her. Celeste was right - Cain didn’t even have to raise a finger to get her back here. She had made up her mind on her own to return here.

She stepped forward, headed somewhere she could be alone. Zeke would have arrived at the dorm by now, and she didn’t want to see him get tense again, or worse, try to kick her out the moment she walked in.

She was on her way to the abandoned archer’s range, when she heard someone call her name from behind. The second she heard the voice, she didn’t know how to feel anymore.

Anger. Disgust. Rage. Betrayal.

It all just twisted into one heavy look on her face as she turned around and looked at him.

"Teddy,"

Hearing his voice in the past lit up her insides, but right now, she was intensely repelled. Maybe it was because of what he did, or because she had found her mates. Whatever the reason, somehow, that feeling of love just wasn’t there anymore.

And the way he looked and spoke, it was as if everything that happened between them didn’t. Like it was suddenly something of the past, because that’s how he’s always treated it. Because she was always very quick to forgive him in the past. So to him, it didn’t matter anymore.

Her pain didn’t. Her tears didn’t.

As she realised all this, she felt like slapping herself. She had been so stupid in the past. Stupid in love, indeed. Not anymore, not for Eric.

"Go away, Eric," Her heavy, tired eyes met his, "If you don’t want me to beat you up,"

He looked at her in disbelief, then laughed, "Beat me up? Come on,"

She almost laughed herself. He was tweaking her buttons, and her hands were slowly turning into fists.

He had the audacity to even laugh. After what he’d done.

"Leave me alone, Eric," She said and turned around to leave before she would actually jump on him.

But he caught her arm.

Theo’s eyes twitched.

"You need to come somewhere with me," He said, "I’ve been looking for you for the past few days, till I heard you left the academy with Zeke. I still don’t agree with you having any relationship with that Jer...,"

Her eyes flashed a deadly yellow, and her amber eyes glowed as she suddenly whirled around, fast enough for him to see only a blur before her fist smashed right into his face.
