Chapter 122: I Know a Boy, not you.

The night stretched even deeper and everything became silent. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of chirping insects and owl hoots coming from the forest.

And from the cottage, a constant soft knock on the door every twenty seconds. She refused to leave. She was never going to leave till he opened the door and looked at her.

And she was getting worried about him. If he had fallen asleep, he would start having those nightmares, and if he didn’t, he would be in pain by now. She wanted to rip the door open and go to him, but the house meant so much that she didn’t want to spoil anything.

"Zeke?" She would call every five minutes.

The silence was making her very restless.

Her cheeks were blotched and sticky with dried tears.

"Zeke... please..." she whispered again, her forehead now pressed against the wooden door. She didn’t even have the strength to cry anymore, just soft, trembling whimpers escaping her every few minutes.

And then, she heard a sound.

A deep, strangled gag.

Her entire body froze. The next one came, even more violent than the first.

Theo bolted upright and grabbed the doorknob. "Zeke?" she whispered, terror slamming through her chest.

Silence again.

Then, she heard him vomit painfully. She heard the sound of liquid splattering against the floor.

"Zeke!" she cried and used her strength to throw the locked door open without thinking, breaking the hinges. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

The smell of blood was thick in the house. So much of it that made her panic rise even more.

"Zeke?" her voice broke.

Another retch answered her from the bathroom.

Theo sprinted toward it and stopped when she entered the doorway.

Zeke was bent over the sink, one hand braced weakly against the counter, while the other gripped the basin so tight his knuckles were bone-white.

His hair hung over his eyes, sweat dripping from it while his chest rose and fell very fast.

The sink was streamed with blood. Too much of it. And his lips, chin and neck were also smeared with it.

"Zeke!" She gasped, utterly horrified

He didn’t look at her. He squeezed his eyes shut, breathing through his teeth.

"Get out," he whispered in a numb, pained voice.

Theo took a step toward him, "Zeke, let me..."

He slammed his hand against the counter, "GET OUT!"

She flinched hard, tears bursting back into her eyes.

But she didn’t move.

He gagged again, another mouthful of blood spilling into the sink as he coughed and retched. His legs gave a dangerous shake. He was going to collapse.

"Zeke, please. Let me help you..."

"Don’t—" he choked, gripping the sink with both hands now, "Don’t you dare come near me,"

"You’re bleeding..."

"I SAID DON’T TOUCH ME!"

He shoved away from the counter, staggering back. He was as pale as a ghost, and too weak to stand straight, hence he kept staggering.

Theo reached out instinctively to hold him, but he slapped her hands away.

"Don’t," he rasped, his breath stuttering, "You don’t... get to act like you care,"

"I DO care!"

"You cared enough to let me choke on lies!"

He took two steps forward and nearly fell. Theo caught him before he did. He tried to shove her away, but he was too weak for it to move her far.

"Let go," he growled, trying again. His claws scraped desperately against her arm but she didn’t release him, "I said...LET. GO."

"No," she whispered, her voice breaking, "I’m not leaving you like this."

He laughed a broken, delirious laugh, "Look at you," he croaked, "Still lying. And you’re so good at it, I’m almost convinced again,"

"I’m not lying!"

"You lied and you only felt pity for me. Then you went ahead with him and you...," He cut himself off, staggering again. His hand stained her shirt with blood as he tried once more to push her away. He couldn’t even lift his arm properly.

Theo guided him toward the bedroom, but he twisted violently out of her grip and tried to drag himself toward the door.

"I’ll do it myself," he muttered, "I don’t need you. I don’t want your help. I don’t even know who the hell you are,"

"You DO know me—"

"I KNOW A BOY!" He roared it so loudly she froze.

His eyes trembled as they met hers. They were wild, haunted and hollow, "I knew Hellcat. I knew someone I trusted. Someone I slept beside. Someone I—" He swallowed hard, "Someone I cared for, "

He looked her up and down like she was a ghost, "But you?" he whispered, "You’re a stranger,"

She stepped toward him.

He stepped back

But his foot slipped and he crashed halfway to the door, hitting the floor with a painful thud, "Zeke!" she shrieked, dropping to her knees.

He coughed hard, and more blood hit the floor.

Theo grabbed his face, trying to wipe the blood away from his lips with her shirt. He clenched his jaw and shoved her again, but it was just weak and desperate.

"You’re going to die if you keep this up!" she sobbed.

"Good," he rasped.

She stifled a sob.

"I don’t need help. Not from you. Not from anyone," He coughed again, more blood trickled out, "I was doing fine before you. I’ll be fine after,"

"No, you won’t," she whispered, "You need me. Please,"

Zeke stared at the floor, shaking.

And the mate bond did nothing but continue to tempt him, pulling him closer to her. Everything was against him. It’s always been.

He finally exhaled and looked at her with a dark glare, "Fine," he muttered hoarsely.

She almost sighed in relief.

"But that’s all you’ll ever be to me again," he whispered, "A healer. A burden. A mistake I won’t repeat,"

"Zeke—"

"And when the sun rises," he cut in coldly, "You leave. You go back to him. You go back and glue yourself to his arms,"

Theo stopped breathing.

"You leave this house, this forest, this entire region, "His voice was hollow and dead, "No more lies. No more secrets. No more... you,"

Her tears fell quietly.

"And whenever you see me in school, pretend you don’t know me. If you saw even a word to me, I’ll drag your sorry, pathetic ass to the Commandant and strip you bare. Forget the Commandant, I’ll drag you out of Gravemont myself and I’ll make sure you’re bleeding while I do it," He finished and looked away.

"I’m sorry," She could only whisper.

"Help me tonight," he said again, almost like a command, "And then get out,"
