The Female General Dominates All After Transmigration-Chapter 75: First Night Drive
Ling Chengyan instinctively pursed her lips, preparing to endure Zhou Guoqing’s harsh scolding.
To her surprise, there wasn’t a peep from him. She sneaked a glance and saw Zhou Guoqing leaning back on the passenger seat with his eyes closed and seemingly sound asleep.
Ling Chengyan couldn’t help but chuckle softly, shook her head slightly, and refreshed her spirit to continue driving.
Over three hundred miles, taking more than five hours of travel, when the car finally stopped, Ling Chengyan jumped down from the vehicle, and only then realized that her neck and back were painfully stiff, her back was cold as ice due to her clothes being drenched in sweat.
It wasn’t even May Day yet, the weather was still quite cool, and when the vehicle was moving, the breeze through the window was quite comfortable. Normally, sitting in the passenger seat never made her sweat.
Zhou Guoqing saw her head straight for the water pipe to wash her face, and managed a rare smile.
Re-loading the vehicle for the return journey, Ling Chengyan was once more at the wheel.
Because they had lunch over there and rested for a while, it was quite late by the time they headed back, the sky was already completely dark. The headlights were very bright, but it was definitely not the same feeling as driving during the day, and Ling Chengyan couldn’t help but tense her nerves again.
Finally, Ling Chengyan saw a large signpost of Huicheng District, white with red letters, very striking. She perked up; they were almost home.
Suddenly, a shadow darted out from behind the signpost, directly heading towards the car’s front. Ling Chengyan panicked for a moment but accurately stepped on the brakes.
With a screech, a sudden brake sent Zhou Guoqing, who was resting with his eyes closed on the passenger seat, almost crashing into the front windshield.
Ling Chengyan’s foot was on the brake, and simultaneously shifted gears, swiftly reaching out to grab Zhou Guoqing just as his head was about to hit the glass.
Zhou Guoqing was startled, dazed for a moment before asking, "What happened?"
To her surprise, there wasn’t any scolding.
Ling Chengyan opened the car door, preparing to get out, saying, "Something crashed into the front."
"Wait!" Zhou Guoqing shouted sternly, stopping Ling Chengyan from getting out, and reached under the seat pulling out two items.
A claw hammer and a long wrench.
Zhou Guoqing handed the claw hammer to Ling Chengyan who instinctively took it. He grabbed the long wrench and jumped out of the car first.
The car door wasn’t closed.
Ling Chengyan followed right after him, the car had stopped but the engine wasn’t off, the bright headlights pierced through the night.
After the long journey, a layer of dust inevitably settled on the newly washed car front, and because they crossed a short muddy road, there was some mud still clinging to the underside, although it had dried by then.
However, everything seemed normal, there was no sign of the shadow Ling Chengyan saw.
Zhou Guoqing returned to the car, took out a flashlight and checked around, confirming no one else was nearby. He patiently instructed Ling Chengyan, "Keep watch, I’ll check under the car."
Ling Chengyan responded, "Master, should I hold the light for you?"
"No need..." Without finishing his sentence, he was already proficiently crouched on the ground, flashlight in hand, inspecting beneath the car.
Soon, Zhou Guoqing got up, dusted off his clothes, switched off the flashlight, and beckoned Ling Chengyan back into the car, "Nothing there, probably a rabbit. These creatures are so silly they dash towards the headlights."
Thinking of the size of the shadow, Ling Chengyan agreed it was quite possible. The car had a high clearance, a person could crouch beneath it so a rabbit might just fit through.
The mentor and student got back into the car and Ling Chengyan smoothly drove back to the base garage. It was too late to unload, they would have to wait until the next day.
Closing the garage door, Zhou Guoqing left without a word.
Ling Chengyan took a couple of steps, suddenly speaking up, "Master, thank you."
Zhou Guoqing paused his steps and couldn’t help but turn his head to look, only to see his apprentice walking light-footed towards the family quarters.
He stood still, shook his head with a snort, quickened his pace, and returned to his dorm.
The next day, since the goods in the car had not been unloaded yet, Ling Chengyan didn’t get up early to inspect the vehicle.
For a change, she went to the cafeteria for breakfast, coincidentally coming across the new recruits returning from drill.
"Sis-in-law!"
"Sister Yan!"
Wu Qingyun and Zhang Wanxiang greeted her with smiles, along with the Fujiao Commune’s sharpshooter Zheng Hongwei and others who also approached her. Ling Chengyan had indeed timed the meeting and brought a can of spicy shrimp paste to hand over to Zhang Wanxiang with a grin.
"Ah, shrimp paste! It’s really good stuff!" Zhang Wanxiang grinned so widely his mouth almost reached his ears.
Zheng Hongwei and the others also showed joyous expressions.
When they first joined the army, even plain white buns and daily dishes felt quite satisfying. But after some time, they couldn’t help missing the taste of home, longing even for the simplest pickled veggies, feeling army stew was bland and tasteless. Shrimp paste was a local specialty, much like pickles, an everyday relish for locals, especially shrimp paste steamed with dried chili and lard, vibrant, fragrant, and spicy, incredibly appetizing!
Zhang Wanxiang beamed, showing a mouthful of bright teeth, "Hehe, with this, I’ll grab a couple more buns for lunch!"
Ling Chengyan chuckled, "I still have plenty at my place, let me know whenever you want some."
Without hesitation, Zhang Wanxiang nodded in agreement and seemed to remember something, looked back, and saw Zheng Hongwei quickly lead others inside.
Only then did Zhang Wanxiang awkwardly say, "Sister Yan, about the books you gave us, they were seen by others who also want to copy them..."
Ling Chengyan raised an eyebrow: "Sure, you guys finish copying, then they can borrow to copy."
Wu Qingyun added, "We’ve both finished copying, but we weren’t careful and let them see..."
Ling Chengyan laughed and shook her head, "No problem, it’s just a book, let them have a look."
With that, she took another book out from her bag — it was a copy of "Automobile Structure and Maintenance" she got from the bookstore, handing it over to them: "This book is more professional, start reading it to understand the structure of cars. If there are things you don’t understand, feel free to ask your instructors or write it down to ask me or the master you’ll be assigned to later."
The previous book "Complete Guide to Home Repairs" had been of great help, giving them comprehensive knowledge and familiarity with various tools and making them faster learners in theory classes compared to others.
Seeing Ling Chengyan pull out a new book now, the two seized it as a treasure, flipping through it immediately.
Ling Chengyan smiled watching them read for a while before reminding them: "Alright, head in for your meal now. You can continue reading the book later."
"Yes, yes!" They quickly replied, while Ling Chengyan waved them off and briskly walked away.
After she finished breakfast and arrived at the garage, she was surprised to find Zhou Guoqing had already driven the car out.
Ling Chengyan’s curiosity arose, but she was used to Zhou Guoqing’s tacit attitude, so she didn’t ask.
Over the following days, Ling Chengyan found herself gradually getting more comfortable driving on the road, barely feeling the physical stiffness during short trips, and even longer trips were getting better, not leaving her drenched in sweat anymore.
On that particular day, their vehicle took a short trip, going over a hundred miles to deliver supplies to the coastal border station.
Before setting off, Liu Xianghu quietly approached Ling Chengyan: "If you can get hold of good dried shrimp, good seaweed..."
Before he could finish, the young man’s face turned beet red.
