The Female General Dominates All After Transmigration-Chapter 246 - 243: Wolves
Ling Chengyan poured the two pots of water she brought back into a pot and boiled them after filtering with gauze.
By the firelight, she could see a white scum forming on the surface of the boiling water. After filtering the water with clean gauze again, she finally filled a jug with some to drink.
The water had a slightly salty and muddy taste, but the bitterness was not obvious.
Ling Chengyan looked up and faced the hopeful gazes of the crowd, smiled, and said, "It’s drinkable."
"That’s great!" The group cheered in unison.
Next, Ling Chengyan led the team to divide the boiled and filtered water into canteens, while some others made another trip to the reed marsh to fetch water.
Ling Chengyan didn’t follow, only reminding Li Ming and Feng Jianshe to be cautious of the mud pools. Just thawed, combined with the marshlands, some mud pools are very dangerous. Encountering danger during the day is easier to handle; if one gets stuck at night and rescue is delayed, it’s still perilous.
After finishing packing the boiling water, Ling Chengyan checked the watch. Over ten minutes had passed, yet the team fetching water hadn’t returned.
She got up and looked towards their direction—if they had returned, she should have seen the flashlight.
Instead, before seeing any light, she heard two short shouts.
"Wolves!"
"Run fast!"
Ling Chengyan abruptly stood up, sprinting towards the reed marsh, still remembering to bring her weapon in the rush.
Others heard the shouting too. Although they didn’t hear clearly due to lack of ear strength, they saw the company commander’s urgency and quickly put down what they were holding, picking up handy objects to rush over there.
This province has a large population; except for the Southern Mountain Area, other areas have long lost the traces of large carnivorans, thus, this outdoor training didn’t carry much weaponry or ammunition.
Therefore, these people grabbed whatever was at hand, a sappers’ shovel or a hammer if available, while some took a shoulder pole or a bucket, and one person without any object available even brought the pot used for boiling water.
The group charged over, and seeing several people running towards them almost reaching the reeds. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Ling Chengyan counted, two were missing.
"Where are Li Ming and Feng Jianshe?"
"The squad leaders are behind..." A young soldier answered, probably realizing they fled over leaving Li Ming and Feng Jianshe at the back, feeling a bit guilty and sad, choked mid-sentence, "We, we shouldn’t have left the two squad leaders behind..."
"It’s okay, not blaming you." Ling Chengyan waved her hand to stop him and quickly instructed, "Leave two people to check if they have wounds, treat and bandage them, others follow me."
Her voice barely fell, and Ling Chengyan had already charged into the dried reeds.
There were human shouts and animal calls coming from the reeds.
Ling Chengyan had seen wolves and had encountered them multiple times through hunting, experiencing close encounters. However, these calls sounded more like dogs or other canines rather than wolves.
She ran closer and fired a shot into the sky.
Bang! The sounds and calls paused for a moment.
Then someone shouted, "Company Commander! The commander is here!"
Ling Chengyan ran towards the sound, hearing in her ears the ’wolf howl’ slowly retreating, seemingly abandoning the fight and preparing to escape.
Close by, Ling Chengyan, using her flashlight, quickly reached two people, right near the pond.
The originally dry yet still upright reeds were trampled and bent down in a patch, one soldier holding a water bucket and another clutching a webbing strap, both bodies arched, maintaining a fighting posture.
Seeing Ling Chengyan arrive, both relieved, sat heavily on the ground, gasping sharply.
Ling Chengyan shone the flashlight around, the reeds rustled, and she only saw an animal resembling both a wolf and a dog dart swiftly into the reeds, quickly disappearing, evidently running away.
Confirming there was no more danger, Ling Chengyan then lowered her head to inspect the injuries of Li Ming and Feng Jianshe.
Li Ming’s left hand was bitten, his left neck and cheek scratched leaving blood trails; Feng Jianshe’s sleeve was torn, faintly stained with blood, seemingly having an arm bite injury.
Besides these, their clothes were ripped and torn in many places, but Ling Chengyan carefully checked and confirmed, fortunately wearing cotton clothing, they seemed woeful but didn’t have too severe injuries, she silently let out a breath of relief.
"How many?" Ling Chengyan indicated for the accompanying people to help them up, while asking.
"Two...maybe three..."
The water-fetching team had only brought one flashlight; in panic, it fell to the ground, so they went blind, not seeing clearly the number of ’wild wolves’.
Just felt shadows plenty thinking they encountered a pack, directly frightened.
Ling Chengyan let people bring them back, holding a weapon circling the pond to inspect.
Using the flashlight carefully searching through, Ling Chengyan found several fish thrown by the pond, some had jumped to the water’s edge, some were struggling helplessly flopped onto the trampled reeds, weakly flicking their tails.
Feng Jianshe wasn’t heavily injured, insisted on staying with Ling Chengyan.
"Saw many fish by the water when fetching water, reached to catch not much movement, everyone wanted to bring them back... didn’t expect several wolves suddenly emerged..." He explained, somewhat embarrassed.
Ling Chengyan waved, "Not blaming you, just an accident."
She said this bending to pick up all the fish, threading them with a reed, bringing them back.
Peeple returned, and water fetched back too.
Ling Chengyan assigned tasks, someone cleaning and bandaging the wounded, others treating the water...
Busy working, Geng Wei led a group also returned.
Several carried hand nets, surprisingly each net pouch was heavy, each holding at least ten pounds of dorados.
"Why so many?" Someone was shocked.
Without Geng Wei speaking, Zheng Qianjin gestured excitedly explaining: "You don’t know, the ground was full of these things, no place to step, a foot down, crushing several..."
Others chimed in, hearing them talk, dorados lay like grain spread in a drying yard, bending could pick them up, moreover, the quantity was endless.
Ling Chengyan smiled and said, "Alright, the dorados you brought back are just right, tonight we can bring them back and let those at home have a taste."
With these words, the previously excited Geng Wei, Zheng Qianjin, and others noticed Li Ming and Feng Jianshe’s condition, quickly inquired with care, learning of the surprise encounter with suspected ’wild wolves’.
"Company Commander, give me some men, two guns, I’ll go shoot those beasts."
Li Ming and Feng Jianshe were both Geng Wei’s squad leaders in the second platoon, seeing his own soldiers injured, Geng Wei was the first to jump up.
Third Platoon Leader Zheng Qianjin immediately said, "I’m going too!"
