Chapter 95: Burden.

Earlier That Evening.

Pulling her luggage with one hand and holding Esther with the other, Shikera walked towards the parking lot. She pulled open the car door for the little girl to enter before walking to the back and opening the trunk to put the luggage inside.

They were waiting for Hazel who was taking extraordinarily long when another car drove in, which Shikera recognized as the one which Chris used most of the time. When the driver alighted from the car and opened the back door, she wasn’t surprised when Chris alighted from the car. However, the same could not be said about when she heard Chris call out to her.

"If you aren’t in a hurry, can I see you for a few minutes in my study?"

"Definitely," Shikera replied him, while wondering about the reason why he would want to see her in the privacy of his study. Plus the fact that he was only telling her when she was about to leave the mansion.

Giving Esther a light warning not to touch anything in the car, Shikera followed the man into the main building. When they arrived at his study, Chris went straight to the point instead of beating about the bush.

"Miss Anderson, it has been three months and a few days since you signed the contract marriage with my son, right?"he asked, the tone of his voice showing that he already knew the answer to his question.

"Yes," Shikera answered.

"And you have nine months left at most, right?"

"That’s true. Is anything the matter...Mr DeLoach?" Since the man was the one who started the formality game, Shikera decided to keep up with him.

"It’s nothing. I just wanted to ask if you haven’t, for a moment, felt suffocated by living with my son. I know your friends wouldn’t be able to visit you like they have been doing before you married him so I wanted to know if you are comfortable," he explained.

"It has been manageable, and Ethan has been social enough to entertain me. I also spend most of my time at work so it isn’t much of a problem," Shikera answered.

Chris sighed in relief, his face suddenly growing serious.

"That’s great then. Since he has satisfied you according to the contract terms, I hope you also do the same. Like listening to every rules he put in place for your safety, and... restraining on exuding your ’womanly charms’ when he’s present."

"What do you mean by that...’womanly charms’?"

"It’s no news that my son had this casual attraction for you four years ago so I presume you must have heard about that. I’m simply telling you not to accept any of his advances if he suddenly decides to..."

Shikera interrupted him, a frown on her face.

"And why are you the one telling me this? Ethan is not a child, and neither am I. We are old enough to take our relationship anywhere we feel like and ours will not be the first marriage that started from a contract to a real one."

"I agree with that. But the fact that everyone does it doesn’t mean I will accept that for my own son and heir, at that. You should understand what I’m talking about, Miss Anderson," Chris pressed, his voice lowering into a whisper.

"I don’t follow though," Shikera shook her head.

"Miss Anderson, that only shows that you aren’t compatible with my son. I would say that the only thing which brings you both together is the status, wealth, and fame your parents have. However, when viewed on a personal note, your health, geno—"

"It’s alright!" Shikera cut in, not caring if she sounded impolite.

"I get it now! This whole speech from the beginning seems to be a reminder not to bite more than I can chew, right? I don’t have the right to love, because of my health? Why am I not surprised? Probably because I’ve heard it so many times in my life that it has become a part of me...that I am a burden."

Chris sighed, though he still maintained his firm gaze.

"That’s not exactly what I mean, Miss Anderson. I am only trying to tell you that I can’t allow my son bear that much—"

Without waiting for him to complete his sentence, Shikera walked out of the room.

"I will pretend I didn’t hear that," but not without leaving those words.

Ethan’s jaw almost fell to the ground as the light ray escaping from the tiny opening in the door, reflected on Shikera’s body which she had just removed her shawl from.

His mouth suddenly felt dry, so dry that he had to swallow to feel that it was still there. What the fuck was she wearing?!

On the other hand, Shikera’s was shivering in anticipation as she felt Ethan’s eyes on her body. She had only this night to do this, before that spirit of self blame descended on her and hold her back from fulfilling her desire. She needed this baby, and she did not plan to love Ethan before getting pregnant.

So she would not be a burden to him.

"Kera, what are you wearing?"

Kera! That word leaped in Shikera’s heart and she was suddenly excited. It meant the way she dressed affected Ethan, and now, the only thing she needed to do was to make sure he continued and not stop halfway like previous times.

"Night...dress?" Shikera whispered, feeling goosebumps on her skin as the windy night air blew at her, making her want to wrap her hands around herself.

However, instead of doing that, she turned around to enable his eyes have access to her whole body.

Ethan did not miss that opportunity, as his eyes trailed down from her face, down to her bare chest and exposed breast; with the only covered part being her nipples. His eyes trailed down to her belly button and down to her bare thighs and that was where...the dress stopped!

He hadn’t noticed she was wearing anything since it was a netting material which was the same as wearing a transparent dress. As she turned her back, he saw that it was the same as the front with only the lower part of her body covered with a silky material.

Swallowing, he stuttered, "How is this a night dress? Would you have worn this if Enoch was coming too?"

"I wouldn’t," Shikera deadpanned. "I wore it only for you... except you don’t like it—" she stared up at him with doe eyes and that was the last straw that broke the camel back, not her words, but her eyes.

That expression that revived the instinct to protect in him.

"Kera..."

In the next moment, his lips were on hers and his hand tearing the night dress...or whatever the thing she was wearing was called.
