Chapter 77: Burden.

Shikera munched on the vegan sandwich in front of her, as she tried to tune out the noise created by the junior students in the cafeteria. As her eyes took in the empty seats around the table she was sitting on, she found it hard to believe she had been attending this school for a month. Was that how unlikeable she was that no student had approached her to be her friend?

"Hi!" A whisper drifted into her ears and she looked up to see Mignon DeLoach, with a smile on her face.

Shikera looked left and right to be sure she was the one this high school celeb was talking to, before answering, "Me?"

She pointed her index finger to her chest to emphasize her question.

Mignon nodded, looking around before whispering, "Don’t look so dull. You’re dampening your beauty."

As she was done talking, the senior hurried away from there to her own table which was surrounded with admirers and friends. Shikera’s face was blank, as she took in that cheerful atmosphere. Why could she not have that same energy flowing around her? Even at home, the house was always quiet as her father and brother were on tenterhooks around her. They worried too much about her health that the maids were required to work without making any noise.

It had also been a while since Krystal and Leonard had come to visit her. Her father told her Krystal had gone to study abroad, but then, Leonard who was in the same school as she was, avoided her the same way she did to him.

Unable to bear the loneliness again, she stood up from her seat and threw the half eaten sandwich into the trash bin before walking out of the cafeteria. At the doorway, she saw Leonard walking in and they exchanged subtle nods as the latter was also surrounded by his friends.

Shikera walked along the hallway and past the block of science laboratories, to the toilet, taking refuge inside one of the cubicles as she took out her phone.

"Liam Anderson," she typed, clicking on the Google search button.

The results was released immediately and it was just as she had heard, his picture, his company name and all...but there was nothing about his family.

"Mega families," she searched again. The results were the same as what she heard with no additional information; the internet only stated the member families and the areas in which they exercised sovereignty.

"Hey! Did you see the Anderson girl?"

Her ears perked up when she heard someone talking about her from outside the toilet. Silently switching off her phone, she strained her ears to make out the words from the whispers.

"Anderson girl? Don’t you know her name?" Another voice asked.

"Why would I bother to know that? Apart from her father’s money, what use does she have?" the first voice asked.

’At least they know there’s a benefit in befriending me,’ Shikera thought, inching closer to the door of the cubicle so she could hear them clearer.

She heard the first voice continue, "As if her uselessness isn’t enough, she’s also a burden. Would you like it if you become her friend and start worrying over a trivial thing such as water to drink? You should see her arguing with the cafeteria master about the water she was served, when her water flask was exhausted?"

Noiselessly, Shikera slipped to the ground, as she continued absorbing the conversation on the other end.

"What do you mean?" the second voice asked.

"I mean, even her parents would still dump her when she dies so why bother to befriend her? Unless you like charity cases..."

Shikera raised herself to stand up straight, even though tears were blurring her eyesight right now. She was not going to cry, because she was not as weak as they said...

She pushed the door open and walked out of the cubicle, smiling at the shocked expressions worn on the faces of the two girls outside.

"Hi!" She greeted, and they answered her enthusiastically as she expected.

"Hey, Ander..."

From the voice, Shikera could tell this was the first speaker and her eyes trailed down to her name tag.

’Skyler McCallum,’ it read.

"You don’t even know my name, yet you seem so excited to talk about me to your friends. It doesn’t surprise me though, since it’s only your jealousy speaking."

After forcing the sarcastic words out, Shikera walked out of the restroom and back to her class. From now on, she would kill every hope of having friends within her as fate has opened her eyes to see that she didn’t deserve friends.

As depressed as Shikera had been that sunny afternoon in school, her mood became the direct opposite when she got home to see a female student sitting in her room. The school uniform didn’t look like hers, and the girl was also unfamiliar.

"Hello...Did you miss your way?"

The girl laughed unrestrainedly, a sound Shikera hadn’t heard since she woke up. Her father and Noah always smiled most of the time, and if they would laugh which was seldomly, it was always like they were scared of displeasing her with their loud laugh.

"Why would you think I missed my way? Like it is possible for anyone to enter Liam Anderson’s house...or The Mega Estate, without permission?"

Shikera agreed with that point, though she didn’t show it. Perhaps, she thought, was this another of the Mega family members whom her father allowed in?

Hurriedly, she tried to recall all the names her brother had mentioned to her, while excluding the boy’s name.

’I met Mignon DeLoach already so it’s not her, I met Krystal too..."

Jerking her head up, she asked, "Are you from the Lucian’s family?"

"No," came the reply.

"From Royal Alexander?"

"I saw their mansion for the first time today," the girl deadpanned.

"Alright, so Lucian, DeLoach, the two Alexanders, and... Lincoln?"

"Nah! Their mansion is still further into the estate. I was only able to see the one before yours." By this time, the girl was now walking around Shikera’s room. She picked up a dress on the bed and placed it against her own body, while smiling to herself.

"Then...you’re the only daughter of the Alvriers?!"

At this moment, the girl slumped on the bed as if Shikera’s guesses had exhausted her.

"What? Do you only want friends that are members of the Mega families? Surprise...I’m not from that group."

"I’m sorry...then, who are you?"

The girl arose from the bed, walking towards Shikera with a smile.

"Hello, Miss Shikera Anderson! I am Cyprian Leigh, your hired friend."
