Chapter 49: Mignon DeLoach’s Scandal.

"She amuses me!" Ethan laughed out loud, shocking Raymond who was sitting beside him. The latter couldn’t care less though, since he also had the chance to see his girlfriend while his boss fed his amusement. However, he was finding it hard to give his latest report while being scared that the man would be annoyed.

He sighed, summoning courage to speak out. "But...I haven’t been able to find her for a while now. And no one knows where she is too."

"What do you mean you haven’t been able to..." Ethan trailed off when he spotted the girl they were speaking about, through the rearview window. She was with her group of friends, laughing out loud at a joke someone was telling as they walked past his car.

She was always this carefree and energetic, and that was how he had been attracted to her without knowing.

"How about I talk to her today?" he asked, turning to Raymond who nodded vigorously. At least, he would stop being scared that people could think of them as stalker.

Ethan nodded and pushed the car door open, taking a deep breath in as he braced himself and adjusted his facemask. However, he hadn’t taken two steps away from the car when loud shouts erupted from the group walking in front of him.

His legs quickened towards them to see that the girl on the ground, completely still and pale. What had happened to her in these few minutes?! Hurrying over to her to perform the little first aid steps he knew, he was still kneeling beside her when his phone rang. He ignored the call until Raymond ran towards him, with his own facemask too, intact.

"We have to leave here, Ethan. Miss DeLoach...she committed suicide."

Ethan’s hand paused, hovering over the girl’s face as he looked up to Raymond.

"What are you saying?"

"The reporters escalated the news and..."

Ethan’s eyes moved to the girl lying at his front and to the ID card around her neck, as Raymond’s voice faded into the background.

"Shikera Anderson, Second Year Student, Faculty of Mass Communication." As he read that, his eyes caught bits and pieces of the words of the people behind him.

"Reporter Anderson fainted?!"

"OMG! Is she going to disappear for a year again?!"

"Then, she wouldn’t get any point for the research she made on MD!"

Ethan didn’t know how and when he got home, but he could remember vividly the harsh comments and curses the public had thrown at Mignon, and the blames and accusing eyes his family had stared at him with. They had thought he ignored Mignon when she reached out to him, since he had never really been on the same page with her.

As far as Ethan could remember, he had been used to covering his face and hiding from the public while Mignon was the exact opposite. She yearned for public attention right from a young age, accepting prizes on Ethan’s behalf, attending tea parties and gala nights with her parents, and contesting for every social position in the society.

Even though they attended the same school, Ethan was never seen with his sister. What business would the masked, isolated boy have with the girl who attracted attention like sugar attracted insects? This continued until Mignon came home one day, broken and with completely empty eyes.

As they had not been very close before then, Ethan did not have the opportunity to get details on what happened to her. But he was not surprised when his sister’s belly increased in size, until she gave birth to Esther whom he adopted as his own daughter; the only connection he had with his sister. He had thought she learnt her lesson that having the love of the public could backfire if the slightest thing went wrong, so he was angry when she expressed her idea to become a musician.

Mignon was pretty and wealthy so she was quick to find an agent, and was able to become an adored and envied idol in no time, but trouble found her nonetheless. Amidst the various shows she was invited to as a popular idol, was one which was broadcasted nationwide, a show which promoted teenagers chastity. She had accepted the invitation and had visited the show as a guest, everything she said originating from the script her company had given her.

But who knew that would be the last of her in showbiz, as the news of Superstar MD having a daughter leaked out from God knows where. The public received the news just as they always did, and the reporters escalated it as they were always hungry for viewership ratings and the public approval.

The headlines all throughout that year was not complete if it did not have something that mentioned MD.

"THE FAKE ANGEL OF CHASTITY: MD’S DARK SECRET!"

"CHASTITY EXALTS A TEENAGER, SAYS FAKE ANGEL!"

"All kind of horrendous and ridiculous articles were released, but the public took them in hook, line and sinker,"

Shikera was numb with shock, finding it hard to grasp the words she had just heard. While writing the article about MD, she hadn’t considered the feeling of her family members but had only written what she found wrong in the previous articles while exalting MD in a way. Who knew she had really been on the right path with her article?

She turned to Ethan, a pleading gaze in her eyes.

"Do you need this review to be aired publicly? And her name." Even if Ethan had told her all this, she didn’t want to jump the gun and publish his review without his permission as she knew how wary he was of reporters.

"You should. Ruthlyn would also be here to give a physical appearance on my behalf,"

"Really?!"

"It’s the least I could do for her. For a sister who was like a stranger living under the same roof as I did," Ethan whispered.

"She would be proud of you, wherever she is now."

In an attempt to comfort him, Shikera gave him a slight hug and got out of the car, leaving a shocked Ethan.
