"Oh...I am, I was just..." Frowning, Shikera stopped herself from stuttering any further. Why was she even explaining to the woman anyway?
"I will get in," she answered simply, and the older woman nodded.
"Then get in."
Her authoritative tone gave Shikera no other choice but to board the train right there and then, and she did. She looked down at the card which had her destination, and a sad smile crossed her face. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
"I was able to do something by myself after all," she muttered.
She walked down the aisle to take her assigned seat and had only sat down for ten seconds when the old woman from before came to sit beside her.
"Oh! Uhm... ma’am, are you following me?" Shikera asked, too exhausted to show the fear she was really feeling. If anything, her voice sounded more accusatory than ever.
The woman looked up at her with a tired expression on her face, before suddenly hissing, "Your dress must have fooled you to think you are a celebrity. Get yourself together and look around! Everyone that gets on the train here is going to the east, and there is a very wide farmland there! Who looks more like a farmer between us? I should be saying you are the one following me instead!"
Shikera flinched at the woman’s words which seemed to come out as sharp as they could.
"I...I am not following you, that’s for sure—"
"Then get some sleep; your eyes are red from too much crying and you will get a headache if you don’t sleep as soon as possible. I can do you a favor and wake you up when we arrive," the woman cut her off, still in the same sharp manner which she had been talking with.
"Oh... thanks—"
"I said, get some sleep!"
Nodding since she was not allowed to talk, Shikera had no choice but to rest her head back and sleep.
When she opened her eyes next, the woman’s bony hand was patting gently on hers.
"Wake up, we are here."
Shikera checked the time on her watch and shot up to her feet. "Thank you, ma’am!"
Then she rushed out of the train and through the horde of people crowding in the station. Wasn’t this place supposed to be sparsely populated? She could clearly remember Noah telling her that while they were at the military campground mock training.
She could remember it was the night he spoke to her about Ethan, when he told her he would take her on a private tour the next day.
The following day as he promised, he took her with him on a tour around the surroundings of the campground and had shown her some of the places that were not on the country map. One of such places where he had called safe but hidden, was where she was heading to now.
No one would be able to find her there; she was sure of that. Liam would not be able to find out that place, Ethan would not go to such extents for her, and Noah was not reachable right now so no one would be able to guess where she was going.
Still lost in thoughts, Shikera had now walked out of the station and was walking down the shores of the sea.
"Hey! If you keep going like that, you might end up in the middle of the sea!"
"What?!" Shikera turned quickly to see the woman still following her.
"Ma’am, I am convinced as heck now. Why are you following me?" she asked agitatedly.
The woman ignored her and continued walking forward to...
Shikera squinted her eyes to see a small canoe lying on the shore of the sea, and that was where the woman was heading to. The problem now was that she could not see any other canoe on the shore or even on the sea. She and the woman were the only one in that area.
"Wait, ma’am! Uhm... where are you going?" she asked carefully.
"I should be asking you that. Where are you going, stupid Miss?" the old woman retorted.
"To that island that is supposed to be around here. Shouldn’t there be boats or canoes to transport people across?" she whispered, looking around one more time to make sure that there was really no one around. When she was sure, she slowly removed her facemask and closed the distance between her and the woman, who was busy pushing the canoe into the water.
"I don’t think you really know where you are heading to. The only island around here is known only by a few handful of people from the city where you are coming from, so that’s why there are no boats. Everyone who lives on that island have their own boats...plus, we have visitors only once in every decade. Who are you visiting there?"
Shikera rubbed the back of her neck nervously. "Someone, just someone on the island so if you can take me..."
The woman interrupted her with a sharp glare, "Who exactly are you visiting? I know everyone on that island and if you want, I can begin to list their names right now! Tell me who you are going to visit!"
"No one!" Shikera yelled back, knowing there was no way out for her if she continued lying to the woman. "I am just going there for sightseeing so if you could just get me there."
"Get on."
Startled, Shikera confirmed, "You just asked me to get on."
"Except you want to sleep here," the woman deadpanned.
Shikera hurriedly got on the canoe, thinking that her problems had come to an end, but she soon realized otherwise when they got to the island two hours later. There was no light so she could not check the time on her watch, but she could tell it was almost midnight with the way the environment was quiet.
She got out of the canoe with her luggage, huffing and heaving as she pulled it up to the shore.
"Thank you very much, ma’am," she smiled.
"Just go. Continue with your sightseeing," the woman nodded. She left her boat on the shore and walked away from there, leaving Shikera alone.
