Chapter 196: Without His Mask.

"You still won’t say anything?"

Shikera rose up from the bed when she heard the strange question from Ethan. At first, she thought he was talking to someone on the phone and curiosity at who he was speaking to with such a soft tone, had made her look up. However, she realized there was no phone or any device on him and he was staring straight at her.

"Are you talking to me?"

"No, your shadow, Shikera Anderson," he replied.

Shikera laughed out loud. Even though his reply was not that funny, it was enough to lighten up her previously dampened mood.

"What was the question?" she asked, in between bouts of laughter.

Confused on why she was laughing so hard, Ethan raised his brows at her. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

"You won’t still say anything?" he repeated his question.

"Anything about what?" Shikera asked back. Everyone had retired to bed immediately after they returned from the DeLoach’s mansion, but not before all of them had apologized for forgetting her birthday. Apart from Ethan who still behaved as if he was oblivious to what was happening around him.

If it was another time, Shikera would have wondered why he was acting this strange but after what she heard today, it would not shock her one bit if she was thrown out of this villa tonight.

"Are you alright, Shikera? Is anything the matter?" Ethan’s tone suddenly switched from confused to worried. He walked towards the bed and placed his palm on her forehead.

"Do you need to see a doctor?"

"No. Why do you ask?" Shikera climbed out of bed to stand before him.

"Why are you not asking why I’m not wishing you a happy birthday?"

"Oh that? I presumed you forgot since I also didn’t remember," Shikera answered nonchalantly.

"Why would I forget your birthday?"

Shikera finally noticed that something was wrong, and a frown settled on her face.

"Wait. So you knew today is my birthday yet you did not say anything? I didn’t even get a gift!" Shikera exclaimed.

"Finally getting my point," Ethan murmured under his breath.

"What point am I getting? Okay, so tell me why."

Ethan shrugged,"After you. Tell me why I should wish you first."

Shikera scoffed in disbelief. What was this man trying to prove?

"Because I am your wife!" she paused for a second before adding,"We aren’t divorced yet so I am still your wife."

"And who told you we will be getting divorced? Shikera, did you finally realize you are my wife?"

Shikera sighed, staring at him for a second...one...two, and it finally dawned on her. What kind of petty man did she get herself married to?

"Ethan, don’t tell me this is about the whole episode of your wife left the house on Monday and I am just someone who looks like her," she requested.

"It is, in fact. Don’t tell me you enjoy being treated as her look alike instead of as my wife?"

Her lookalike...

"Ethan, you did...you did things to me th—that you should only do to your wife. D—don’t tell me you would do that for Elizabeth too just because she looks like your wife," Shikera asked, her eyes earnestly pleading.

"That’s it. I don’t like doing ’things’ as you said, with my wife’s lookalike but I can’t seem to keep my hand to myself. Shouldn’t my wife come home then? Or are you enjoying playing wife’s lookalike?" Ethan expected that Shikera would at least contend with him for a while before agreeing with him, so he was shocked when she agreed immediately.

"I don’t enjoy it! I want my position back, as your wife..."

"Then get dressed," Ethan ordered.

"For...?"

Staring at her as if she was growing horns on her head, he shook his head and answered,"For a date, to celebrate your birthday."

Shikera pinched herself several times to make sure she was not dreaming and sometimes, she had even asked Ethan to do the same. But he always ended up kissing her instead of pinching her, which just increased that dreamy feeling in her.

Why the feeling? Because she was walking through the streets with Ethan right now, and he was not wearing his facemask. Like everyone was seeing his bare face right now!

"Uhm...Ethan, you sure this is you?" she asked carefully, not minding how stupid her question sounded.

"I don’t have a lookalike," Ethan replied sarcastically, tying her scarf tighter around her neck.

When he told her to dress, Shikera had subconsciously picked out a black t-shirt, skirt, and a black scarf to wrap around her neck. It was no surprise when she joined Ethan in the car and found out he was wearing black too, but...he did not take a facemask with him.

"Don’t stare like that. It’s your birthday and we should have a normal date. Not like anyone would recognize me anyway," he had said, when she first asked why he did not have his mask with him.

Another shocker had occured when he stopped the car five minutes away from their destination and suggested that they walk the remaining distance to the gallery he had proposed that they visit.

Shikera had agreed immediately, but was still wondering if he was alright in the head. Why was he behaving so differently?

With his hands wrapped tightly around Shikera’s, Ethan frowned as they stepped into the dimly lit gallery. Even with the light reflection barely enough for him to see the nearest person’s face, he still felt conscious of it. His hands were itching to pull the scarf around Shikera’s neck and wrap it around his own face.

"Woah! Ethan, what is that?!" Shikera screamed in elation, pulling her hand out of his grip to rush forward. Right in the center of the gallery was a picture of her from four years ago displayed as the centerpiece...

"Shikera!"

The absolutely familiar voice made Shikera turn on her heels, at the same time with Ethan.
