Chapter 178: Terminating Her Job Contract.

The clerk bowed slightly as Enoch walked away, holding her breath so he would not turn back and say she disrespected him by breathing the same air as he was.

"Whoops! Thank God I did not behave like Hazel and decide to stay at the mansion, or I would have been suffocated by so many powerful people around me," she muttered, when she was sure Enoch was out of hearing distance.

Well...even though she already resigned from working in the DeLoach’s mansion, she knew that was only on paper. She knew the secrets of that family to a particular extent and also understood why they couldn’t just let her leave like she never worked there. Her daily life was still under careful scrutiny.

’I should probably get myself into the good books of this young madam so I can at least be cut some slack,’ she thought. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"So yeah..." Shikera read the question on her notepad and smiled, her eyes sparkling in mischief.

She continued,"Doctor Alexander, most of our female viewers have one particular question and we really, really hope you will answer that."

Leonard, who was sitting before her, felt a smile on his own lips when he saw the usual carefree smile on Shikera’s face.

"Anything," he replied to Shikera’s question, "As long as you are not asking what’s my body count."

Shikera laughed lightly at his joke, looking down to read out the last question on her notepad, "So our question goes thus...are you single, Doctor Alexander?"

"Of course, still waiting for my ’princess charming’ to return my feelings," Leonard answered.

"Great, I think most of our viewers are delighted that they still have a chance with the celebrity doctor. And that’s it on Elovien’s Spotlight for this week!"

She threw a smile while staring straight at the camera, before adding in a low voice,"Bye..."

"3...2...1...Cut!"

Shikera rose immediately and removed the micro mic pinned to her t-shirt, as she approached Leonard.

"Thanks for today, Leo," she stated, when she was close enough to him.

Leonard sighed as if he was frustrated at what he heard, "Jeez, I could have used this opportunity to ask you to treat me to dinner but then, I have an appointment with Ethan in an hour."

Shikera’s ears perked up when she heard Ethan’s name. As much as she didn’t want to think about him, she felt it should not hurt to get a little information about him at least.

Therefore, she took the initiative to ask,"You have an appointment with Ethan, for what?"

"What else would bring a doctor and a business man together? Of course, it’s the lesson he takes every evening—"

"Why does he still take the lessons?! Shouldn’t he have cancelled it?" Shikera had already asked, before realizing her voice was too loud for a normal conversation.

Leonard eyed her suspiciously,"For who else but you, Kera. And why are you even asking me this when you can just ask your husband directly?"

"No reason. I’ve just been so busy that we didn’t get to talk much," Shikera lied.

"Oh okay, I’ll be on my way then. Inform me if any of those viewers ask for my number," he teased.

"What are you blabbering about?" Shikera eyes him.

"That’s not a joke. Shouldn’t I entertain myself until my Princess charming decides to reciprocate my feelings?"

Shikera didn’t bother to reply him, only hissing as she walked away from him towards Maxwell. A satisfied look was on his face as he discussed with the assistant producer and Skyler.

"Hey Sky! Maxwell," she called out, and the other two left what they were doing to approach her.

"Hey, Shikera!" Skyler greeted back.

"This is great, Shikera," Maxwell started, skipping pleasantries.

"What is?" Shikera asked.

"Elovien’s Spotlight keeps recording massive views every week! We thought the views would reduce and that viewers interest would diminish, but it has only been increasing. From the stats I’ve observed so far, I think the views from the next airing will be double of that of the very first airing," he informed, his voice dripping in excitement. He expected Shikera to be just as excited as he was but she only replied with a sad smile.

"Is anything wrong, Kera? Are you sick or..."

Shikera shook her head,"I’m not sick."

"It’s alright. Team leader Zuresh and Cyprian already informed me that you have a weak stomach so if anything is making you uncomfortable, you can tell me," he pressed.

Skyler nodded in agreement with what Maxwell said, chipping in her own agreement, "That’s true, Kera. We should celebrate this if you are really alright but if you are not, we are more than willing to postpone."

"Wow, it’s a very rare sight to see you two behaving like worrywarts. I am totally alright so you can relax," Shikera stated.

"Then what’s with the long face?" Maxwell asked.

"It’s just...I want to terminate my contract," She dropped the bombshell as gently as she could. As expected, Maxwell and Skyler just stared at her for a few minutes without saying anything.

Shikera sighed, summoning up courage before she continued,"Uhm...you guys heard what I said, right?"

"We did," Maxwell replied, nodding with an understanding smile that shocked Shikera. Her face fell however, when he added,"And I think I and Skyler will have to get you to the hospital as fast as we can."

"Agreed," Skyler chimed in.

"What are you guys saying? I told you I’m not sick anywhere," Shikera frowned.

"And an idiot would never admit to being an idiot, Shikera. You might not be sick physically but you seem to be missing some screws—"

"What are you insinuating?!" Shikera snapped, interrupting Maxwell.

"Nothing! Just your words just now didn’t sound so sensible," he replied.

"Sensible or not, I said what I said. And i am ready to pay the fines required for breaching the contract."

Looking around the for a suitable place for them to discuss, Maxwell sighted the chair Shikera sat on while presenting, and lead the way there. The trio took their seats around the table, launching into the discussion immediately.

"Alright, so explain right from the start. What prompted this talk about terminating the contract? Did you get offered a job with triple the salary you were offered here? You know it won’t be that easy to—"

"Did you think so low of me, Maxwell? If you did, well I’m sorry to disappoint you cause I’m simply terminating this contract because of some family issues. Except you want me to be absent everytime Elovien’s Spotlight is scheduled."

"I’m trying to understand you here, Shikera, so just help me to understand. What really happened?"

"Nothing that concerns you, Maxwell. I know you must be disturbed about the show but you can let another person handle it," she murmured.

"That’s not the point. It was your idea, Shikera, and the directors were willing to trust you even if you signed a year contract alone so I see no reason why you shouldn’t handle it yourself?"

"You don’t have to see reasons. Just convey my words to the people concerned and forward the documents I need to sign to my Email... Goodbye, it was nice working with you."

She picked up her sling bag and rose to her feet, giving Skyler a thin smile before walking out of the studio.

She got to the lobby on the first floor without anyone coming after her, while failing to fathom the feeling of depressing sadness growing inside her.

"Anderson!" the familiar voice made her look up to see Team leader Zuresh approaching from the opposite direction to her.

"Team leader..." She trailed off, noticing the angry look on the older woman’s face.

"Maxwell called me, Anderson, and I want you to confirm that everything I heard from him is a big lie!"

Shrugging nonchalantly, Shikera replied,"If it’s about me terminating my job contract, then it’s true."

"What?!" Another familiar voice exclaimed.

"Cyprian, what are you doing here too?"

"Skyler called me to ask if I know anything about the family issues that’s making you want to terminate your contract. What are you doing, Kera?!"

"Nothing that concerns you, Rian. This is my decision and I’m going to stand by it," Shikera stated firmly.

Cyprian scoffed disbelievingly, looking Shikera up and down as if to make sure her friend was the one talking.

"What did you just say, Shikera? Something big happened to the extent of making you want to resign from your job, but you don’t think I’m worthy enough to know about it? It’s alright, suit yourself!" she yelled, walking out the large, revolving, exit doors of Preston Media House.

Team leader Zuresh pulled Shikera by her hand to the empty parking lot, releasing her hand immediately she found an hidden spot.

"What is this about family issues?"

Shikera wore her careless and proud mask that she had been using since the previous day, as she declared, "How many times will I have to say ’none of your business’, in just an hour?"

However, she never expected the raging intensity with which Team leader Zuresh answered her.
