Chapter 118: Bonfire.

Hazel stood there, rooted to one spot as she waited for Ethan to talk to her. But he didn’t say anything and simply pierced her with his usual glare, probably because he didn’t want to hang up on the call he was currently on.

In the meantime, Hazel used that opportunity to admire the face she had not seen for 20 years now and she was not dissapointed to see that Ethan was still so handsome, if not more than before.

’What’s this if not fate? How can his face finally be exposed to me after he has been hiding it all this days?’ she thought, smiling inwardly at herself. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Three minutes later, Ethan finally disconnected the call with his eyes still fixed on the person standing behind the couch. If he had not been talking to Shikera, his only hope of having at least an hour sleep that night, he would have hung up on the call immediately when this fool stood up from behind the chair.

"And what are you still doing here?" he questioned, folding his arms across his chest. Suddenly, he was regretting the fact that he just called Shikera now for he was not as angry as he was supposed to be.

"I...I wanted t-to get Esther’s school snacks ready for tomorrow," Hazel stuttered.

"Are you dumb? Isn’t tomorrow Saturday?"

"Ah! That’s true, I totally forgot. Esther complained about not having enough snacks today and that’s why I wanted to make as many as I can tonight. It slipped my mind that tomorrow is a weekend."

"Out!" Ethan had to let her go, thinking that she had really been loitering around because of Esther. He waited until after he heard the door slam after her before going to lock it, as he was sure Enoch would not be sleeping here tonight again like the previous days.

Ping!

A message notification which sounded from his phone, prompted him to lift the device up and check to see a message from Shikera.

[Night. Sweet dreams.]

’As if,’ Ethan thought, replying in the message with another which meant the same.

Military Campground.

[You too.]

Even though the message seemed void of any emotions, Shikera still found herself smiling as she read it.

"Are you reading a love letter, Sis. Kera?"

Shikera jolted, remembering that she had two busybodies flanking her on both her right and left sides. Ruth and Shirley, the two girls who had refused to let her rest since that first night she had settled the argument between them.

Anywhere and everywhere she went, they were always there waiting for her and yelling loudly as soon as they saw her from afar. As much as Shikera had tried to escape from them for this bonfire, she had still failed because their sneakiness was way out of her league.

"What love letter? Shirley, don’t you think your mind is too dirty for an eighteen year old?" Shikera asked, wearing a fake serious expression.

"Right, Sis. Kera? I thought I was the only one who noticed that," Ruth chipped in, earning a glare from Shirley.

She pointed at Shikera and Ruth one by one as she retorted,"It’s none of your faults. I won’t blame you for not having active love lives!"

Smiling, Shikera took that as her cue to excuse herself as she knew Ruth and Shirley would soon start arguing. She walked away from them and went to find her teammates.

Spotting three of them at one end of the campground having a group conversation with some of the soldiers, Shikera approached them.

She smiled, greeting all of them in the group personally before bending to whisper in Maja’s ears,"Where’s Vicky?"

"Don’t know. She probably just remembered that we will be leaving tomorrow so she went on to find her soldier boyfriend," Maja replied, before adding, "What about you? Where’s your boyfriend?"

Shikera rolled her eyes.

"I told you he is just an acquaintance and not my boyfriend," she answered, knowing that Maja was talking about Noah. Though her brother allowed her to visit or call her anytime she felt like it, he forbade her from telling her friends he was her brother.

When Shikera had asked why, he had said something about how they had to keep their relationship to family and friends secret so everyone could be safe.

And now, the only thing she was not allowed to do was causing misunderstandings between her and her teammates.

"Of course, your simple acquaintance cooks very special food for you while we have to eat the military food with the students? If at all you are not dating yet, I believe he is already head over heels for you," Maja argued, before turning to face the meat sizzling over the griller. Since tonight was their last night here, the soldiers prepared a very special meal for them and accompanied it with meat and wine which they would enjoy after dinner.

Shikera knew that Maja would not relent, so she gave up instead and refused to reply her again. Instead, she chose to inform them that Noah would be traveling with them the next day.

"Captain Anderson will be sharing our bus with us, tomorrow. Is everyone comfortable with that?"

"We are, as long as he brings along another young and handsome soldier. The journey is going to be really short if we are all occupied..." She trailed off, bursting into laughter at her own joke.

"There’s more than enough space in the bus for any of us to be uncomfortable," Henry chipped in, his tone duller than usual. Shikera could guess the reason as she knew the attraction he bore for Vicky who wasn’t here right now. As the love agent that she was, she knew she might be able to do something about it.

"Alright then, I will just go greet Richard and Celine before I go back to my tent. I have to wake up early enough tomorrow," she informed them, referring to two other students whom she had befriended during her time here. She could spot them in a circle not far from where she was, engrossed in a game they were playing with their friends so she walked towards them.
