Chapter 112: Twisted Man.

"You have changed, Ethan. You know that, right?"

Silence.

"Why would you allow her leave when you know very much how you are going to suffer if she’s not around?"

Silence.

"Ethan, I am talking to you!"

Silence.

"Uncle Kyle, I think you should just leave daddy alone. You are breaking my concentration over here," Esther yelled from where she was seated on the porch, doing her assignment with Hazel beside her.

She looked from her father’s doctor who was sitting on a chair at the front of the lake, to her father who was seated directly opposite the latter.

Ethan had his facemask on, as Hazel was present and sitting not very far from them.

"Ethan? Would you rather I just leave?" Kyle tried for the last time, frustrated by the fact that Ethan was ignoring him.

"Of course," Ethan finally spoke. "But not before admitting that you really are a useless doctor."

"Ethan..."

"Kyle, I called you to come here only to ask you to continue your research on my case. Not for you to blame for letting my wife travel on a work trip. My wife, and not my maid."

Kyle sighed heavily, lowering his voice so Hazel and Esther wouldn’t be able to hear them discussing.

"Ethan, you signed a contract with her if I’m not wrong. If she defies it so easily then don’t you think this will turn into a usual occurrence?"

"I know that, and that’s my goal. This villa seems to be a place which doesn’t hold contracts in high esteem."

"Hey—"

"And I think it’s because the owner is such a twisted man, wrong?" Ethan smiled thinly, pointing at his own chest.

"You are not twisted but just a little different from everyone else. Within a few months, I’ll try to research more and get a cure, for both your nightmares and instability," Kyle disagreed with him.

"Of course, I’m different from everyone else. I can be manipulated so easily and when I realize it, my pride doesn’t let me call the culprit out." The smile didn’t fall from Ethan’s face as he continued, "And you want me to stop her from going on the trip just because of my twisted nature. Like it’s her fault?"

Realizing that he was not going to win this argument and that Ethan wouldn’t stop speaking about this, Kyle switched the direction of their conversation.

"When is she coming back?"

"In three days, why?"

"Just asking," Kyle replied. Dipping his hand into his pockets, he brought out a piece of paper and placed it in front of Ethan.

"Get this. Just vitamins and other necessities. Consequent nightmares for ten days hasn’t done you any good," he added, before standing to his feet.

"Stay away from work for now, since you won’t be able to concentrate anyway. Call her more often before you sleep and that might help..."

"Just go already. Medical advice is all I need from you," Ethan interrupted him, waving him off.

Watching Kyle walk away, he picked up the glass of water on the table and took a sip before turning back to stare at the calm, undisturbed and clear surface of the lake. He maintained that position for the next hour, where Esther and Hazel had gone inside, before his phone suddenly rang.

As he had been expecting the call, he didn’t bother looking at the caller ID before picking it.

"Did you find him, Ray?"

"I did. He’s in a private hospital here and there are no suspicious movements around him. Should I proceed with the next plan?"

"Do so at your own discretion. I can’t find my father’s copy but I know Chairman Anderson would have taken his."

"What if..." Ray hesitated, knowing that Ethan was never wrong in this kind of things. But he still could not help but doubt, "What if it’s just the normal contract you signed? What if they didn’t sign a separate one?"

"They did. I’m sure of it," Ethan replied, his dark eyes clouding in anger.

"They wouldn’t depend so much on the contract if they didn’t sign something different from the one I and Shikera signed."

"Alright Sir. I will try my best to find it."

The call was disconnected, and Ethan went back to staring at the lake while Raymond went back to raking his hand through his hair in frustration. He blamed himself for starting what he couldn’t finish.

Why the heck did he have to ask to meet Cyprian in that plane? If he had not, he would be able to face his business here without any distractions now! Why was he saying this? Because right in the next room to his was Cyprian, sleeping peacefully as she didn’t have any work to do.

Her assignment had been completed three days ago and she had waited for Raymond, claiming that they could use this period as a mini vacation. Raymond had also hoped for that but who knew that he would not be able to complete his assignment as easily as he had thought he would.

He heard a knock from the door, and Cyprian’s voice followed immediately. She pushed open the door without waiting for a reply from inside, and stuck her head into the room.

"Ray, I will be heading to the pool with the others. Don’t forget about your promise when I come back!"

She closed the door back, and hurried away from there not wanting her teammates to catch her there. Taking the elevator to the floor directly below the one she had her room in, she wondered what lie she would tell her teammates again.

After they ended their assignment some days ago, her teammates had been eager to return to their country but she had dissuaded them by telling them they might not have any chance to take a vacation when they returned. Thus, they had accepted to stay provided that Cyprian footed their bills for the many tourist attraction spots they would visit. And though she had agreed, she still needed to encourage them everyday so the homesick Mama’s boy Atlas would not bring up the topic of going home again.

Tonight, they were going to the seafood restaurant which sold the healthiest and most delicious seafoods in the whole of the country.

Stepping out of the elevator, she took a deep breath as she imagined how empty her card would be when all this finally ended.

"It’s for Ray, Rian. Nothing is too much," she encouraged herself.
