Chapter 108: Protecting Her Husband

Shikera was dumbstruck, and her eyes widened to show that. Wait, had these kids been arguing because of Ethan? Anyhow it was, she knew she had to quell the rumor before it would spread past this group of friends. Regaining her voice after a few seconds had passed, she turned to the girl named Rita.

"Hey Rita, why did you say that?"

Rita, with an expression which showed that she was absolutely sure of what she had said, moved towards Shikera and answered, "Because I know it’s true. My mom is a reporter if you don’t know her, and she works at Preston TV as the team leader of the entertainment department. I saw some papers on the desk in her study this morning and it was all about Ethan DeLoach."

Right from when she heard the middle of Rita’s sentence, Shikera’s brows had raised.

"What’s your mom’s name?" She didn’t bother telling the girl she also worked there, as she didn’t want the girl to restrain from letting out any information.

"Ashley Zuresh, why? She’s a senior figure in the industry so it would surprise me if you don’t know her. Anyway, I found out about this from her desk. Ethan DeLoach is married and no one can convince me otherwise!" Rita insisted, sticking her tongue out at the girl standing beside Shikera.

The latter stomped her legs on the floor and turned to Shikera again,

"Tell her off, Miss. You are a reporter too so you should know about Ethan DeLoach too, right? Is it possible for a man like him to marry...after waiting for me all this years?!"

Shikera eyes widened as she looked around the group. None of them seemed surprised so she presumed that this incidence was a regular occurrence to them.

"What’s your name?" She asked the girl, prepared to advise her to fall out from her deluded state. No one was allowed to crush on her husband, whether old or young!

"Shirley."

"So Shirley, I hate to do this but uhm...Ethan is actually thirty and if you ask him to wait for you who is only eighteen, don’t you think it’s actually unfair?"

"It’s not! Look at this Miss, even you call him Ethan like you want to be close to him. You better not think I’m going to let you have him!"

Shikera inhaled deeply, realizing she was going to be dealing with a troublesome teenager. She decided to try another approach.

"Okay, Shirley, what makes you think you are fit for Ethan, Ethan DeLoach?" She corrected herself at the end, seeing as the othee students were now giving her strange looks. They better not be thinking she was like Shirley here.

Shirley laughed at Shikera’s question, like she had expected it.

"Why else would I not think that? Shirley DeLoach, doesn’t that fit like heaven? Does Rita DeLoach fit like that?" She asked, casting a sidelong glance at Rita.

The latter, who was offended, chipped in.

"Not like you can have him now even if it fits. Ethan DeLoach already dissapointed us all."

From the short conversation now, Shikera realized that Shirley was not the only one who had this unexplainable crush on Ethan. In short, it seemed all the girls in this group did the same, and that Shirley was the only one not accepting reality after Rita broke the news to them.

"A minute, girls. So Shirley, you think Ethan is waiting for you just because your name fits his perfectly?"

"Of course."

"Then how about mine? Shikera DeLoach surely fits too, right? Or what do you think?" Shikera smiled inwardly at her own words, wondering why she had never tried it out before. The name sounded beautiful to her ears and soon, the smile spread widely on her outer face. However, it dropped as soon as she remembered that Ethan didn’t pick her call some minutes ago. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

As anger surged in her heart, a new idea popped into her mind as she faced the group and the now downcasted Shirley.

"Don’t worry about it, Shirley. Whether Ethan is married or not, is his own luck. Want to know why?"

She signaled the group to come nearer and they complied, while surrounding Shikera.

"The truth is, I didn’t want to say this before but...I decided to share it since you are my new friends now. I have actually seen Ethan DeLoach on one of my stake outs, and uhm..." She trailed off, examining the faces of her listeners.

The impatient one, being Shirley, shifted her feet on the ground.

"And what? Do you have my Ethan’s picture?"

"No," Shikera replied, wearing a sympathy filled expression on her face.

"I didn’t have the heart to get his face on camera. It was...full of scars, that made him so unsightly. I had to approach him and ask him what made him look like a monster and his answer was so heart breaking. Do you want to hear it?" She continued in the low voice, instilling suspense in the hearts of the students.

Vigorous nods accompanied her words and she smiled.

"Alright then, but promise to keep this all to yourselves. Ethan..."

"So, Cinderella went to the..." Ethan sneezed, having to pause in his reading. He was putting Esther to bed while reading her one of her favorites fairytales.

Of the ten minutes he had spent reading to her, he had sneezed up to five times and the girl was already fed up.

"Daddy, I think you should go sleep too. I’ve had enough of your ’sneezederella’ for this night," Esther smiled up at her dad, the rigidness of her smile showing that it was fake.

"Goodnight then. Knock on my door if you need anything, and where did you keep my phone?"

Earlier, she had picked up his phone and had been doing God knows what, on it. Since Ethan had been preparing dinner for her then and also knew the smart daughter he had, he didn’t bother to collect it.

After then, he also did not remember so he was just asking now.

"I kept it on the sofa because I wasn’t able to use it after all. Why don’t you have Miss Anderson’s number?"

"Shikera? Were you searching for her number?"

"Yes, I wanted to call her earlier so you could speak to her."

At this point, Ethan knew he had to turn back to sit with his daughter who looked like her wisdom had overgrown her stature and age. He sat down beside her on the bed and asked, "Did I tell you I wanted to speak to her?"

Esther nodded, and continued with her childish tone, "You didn’t tell me verbally but with your actions."

Seeing that her father’s eyes were cold like he would scold her in the very next moment, she knew she had to supply facts to back up her claim so she sat up.
