The Evil Mother-in-law: Torment Children, Work Hard, Be Rich!-Chapter 347: Childbirth
Su Chengmin, ignoring the Wu Family’s obstruction, ran to the main house again, rummaging around and found fifty taels of silver notes which he stuffed into his chest.
He also fished out two ginseng roots and a box of brown sugar, holding them in his hands, and cursed, "The daughter-in-law is having a baby, yet they can’t even bear to bring out the ginseng. Aunt Tong, who did your niece offend in her past life to marry into such a heartless family?"
Mrs. Qiao saw the things from her house being taken by the people Tong Huaqiong brought, like locusts.
Furious, she trembled with anger, yelling, "My daughter-in-law is giving birth, and you’re here causing trouble. Those who know you’re the village lady might understand, but those who don’t might think you’re a bandit. Is it even fair for a village lady to bully others like this?"
Tong Huaqiong said, "I’m indeed bullying you. Go ahead and sue me."
"Push, you have to push!"
Tong Huaqiong anxiously awaited outside the delivery room door. In both of her lifetimes, she had never given birth, experiencing motherhood without pain.
Just now, Cai Wenpo said the baby’s head was almost out, and she thought the baby would come out quickly.
Now, hearing Tong Pandi’s wretched cries, with Cai Wenpo constantly cheering, she really didn’t know how much longer it would be until the baby could safely be born.
"Heartless monster, have you not eaten all day? Where will you get the strength to deliver?" Cai Wenpo scolded.
Mrs. Hong hurriedly filled a bowl with ginseng soup and brought it to the delivery room. Cai Wenpo took it and fed it to Tong Pandi, then placed a Life-saving Pill under her tongue.
Tong Pandi felt her strength return.
"Shameless. Even the poorest family would buy a chicken to nourish the daughter-in-law giving birth. A cold pot and stove while the daughter-in-law gives birth, it’s the first time I’ve seen such a thing." Mrs. Hong cursed after delivering the ginseng soup.
"There are plenty of chickens in the coop, just kill one."
Su Chengmin took a round in the yard, then jumped into the coop, slaughtering six old hens, and jumped back out.
Six aren’t too many; the mother needs to eat, and after traveling a day’s journey, they need to eat too.
Returning to the kitchen, Mrs. Hong set to boiling water to pluck feathers and stew chicken soup.
Su Chengmin said, "Aunt Hong, make a bit more. It’s so cold, we should all have some chicken soup to warm up our bodies."
Mrs. Qiao and Wu Ren were so furious they almost fainted.
Wu Musheng was too scared to even speak.
Tong Dajiao here acts nothing like a village lady, more like a rogue bandit.
Why hasn’t Magistrate Yao eliminated her when clearing out bandits?
Tong Pandi’s daughter, Duo’er, with tears in her eyes, clung to Tong Huaqiong’s side, calling out with a crying tone, "Auntie."
The child didn’t fully understand what was happening, but she knew Auntie was siding with her mother.
So, Auntie must be a good person.
Pitifully, this was Tong Pandi’s eldest daughter.
In Tong Dajiao’s memory, almost a nonexistent role. Given Tong Pandi’s previous life of misery in the Wu family, this little girl was probably not much better off.
Tong Huaqiong, feeling sympathetic, patted her head and said kindly, "Your mother and sister are alright."
Mrs. Qiao was even more infuriated upon hearing this.
Is she cursing the Wu family to have no descendants?
Duo’er shook her head and said, "It’s a brother. If mother gives birth to a brother, grandfather, grandmother, and father would be happy."
Tong Huaqiong said, "Are you listening to their nonsense? In a heartless family, neither boys nor girls would want to reincarnate there. For someone like Duo’er to end up in their family, their ancestors’ graves must be smoking."
Wu Ren was furious, his beard about to blow up, and he said stiffly, "Lady, let’s discuss this matter. Why are you cursing my descendants?"
Tong Huaqiong loudly retorted, "Do you think a family that takes advantage of a woman in labor deserves to have children?"
Wu Ren and Mrs. Qiao, feeling guilty, dared not speak.
After helping Mrs. Hong toss the chickens into the pot, Su Chengmin stepped out into the snow for a walk.
He approached an old man selling charcoal and said, "Old man, could you please go to the county to report a case, saying the midwife for the village chief’s house is trying to harm the daughter-in-law and has been detained."
Without waiting for the old man to refuse, he pulled out a golden hairpin and a golden bracelet he found on Mrs. Qiao, handing them over, saying, "The golden hairpin is for your cart of charcoal, and the golden bracelet is your reward."
The old man selling charcoal hesitated but his eyes shone, and Su Chengmin reassured him, "Just say it was reported by the Sui Feng Village Lady when you reach the county."
The charcoal seller took the golden hairpin and bracelet and quickly left.
He frequently roamed the streets selling charcoal, so naturally, he knew the Sui Feng Village Lady’s reputation; she wasn’t one to be trifled with. With her backing, he wasn’t afraid.
He planned to melt the golden hairpin and bracelet and exchange them for silver notes after reporting, and rent a shop so he wouldn’t have to do business in the wind and snow anymore.
Su Chengmin tread through the snow to Tong Huaqiong and whispered a few words, receiving a glance of approval from her.
Tong Huaqiong felt fortunate again that she’d brought Su Chengmin along. He handled things better than her stepson Gu Dahuan.
Su Chengmin gagged Ma Wenpo and threw her into the woodshed before slipping back into the kitchen to help Mrs. Hong with the fire.
Tong Huaqiong sat boldly at the delivery room door.
The Wu Ren couple and Wu Musheng paced back and forth in the corridor, seemingly worried about Tong Pandi, but actually praying silently for the child’s survival and the mother’s demise.
The snow fell heavier, and the aroma of chicken soup wafted from the kitchen.
Tong Pandi’s cries grew louder. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
As darkness completely set in, at Tong Huaqiong’s request, the Wu family lit the lamps.
Mrs. Hong and Su Chengmin waited with Tong Huaqiong.
Accompanied by a hoarse scream, a loud baby’s cry rang out.
Tong Huaqiong’s back was soaked, as if she had accompanied Tong Pandi through a near-death experience.
"Boy or girl?" Mrs. Qiao rushed to the delivery room door, stopped by Tong Huaqiong.
"Congratulations, Lady, it’s a girl. Look at that voice and the energy of that cry, one can tell she’s as blessed as you are." Cai Wenpo said cheerfully.
"Couldn’t you be mistaken? Didn’t they say a pointed belly means a boy?" Wu Musheng blurted out, unable to hide his disappointment.
Equally disappointed were Wu Ren and Mrs. Qiao.
"Do you think I’m blind and can’t tell boys from girls? Are you the child’s father? How interesting, your wife risked her life to give you a daughter and you didn’t say a word of concern, instead, you worry whether it’s a son." Cai Wenpo chided.
Cai Wenpo wrapped the baby in the red silk Su Chengmin had brought, showing her to Tong Huaqiong.
Just like in the last life, Tong Pandi’s second child was again a girl, but this time, under Tong Huaqiong’s protection, she would live.
"Good, good, good! How’s my niece?" Tong Huaqiong embraced the baby, concerned for Tong Pandi’s situation.
"Lady, rest assured, mother and daughter are safe," Cai Wenpo said gleefully, "the ginseng and Life-saving Pill you brought worked. Though the mother is weak after birth, she’s been conscious."
Tong Huaqiong, relieved, handed the baby back to Cai Wenpo.
Before returning the child to the room, Cai Wenpo glanced at Wu Ren and Mrs. Qiao and remarked, "In all my years, it’s common for families to reward me upon knowing the mother and child are safe. It’s the first time I’ve seen a family turn black-faced upon hearing the mother is safe."
Tong Huaqiong thought, this Cai Wenpo is quite a character.
Wu Ren and Mrs. Qiao’s faces turned uglier after knowing Tong Pandi had a daughter.
