The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 395 Father-in-law and Son-in-law Late Night Conversation
Liu Banxia was still a patient, so Wang Jingxian paid special attention to his dinner. She avoided heavy, oily, or salty dishes like large portions of fish or meat, opting for lighter flavors instead.
Though light, the food was impeccably delicious. That was true talent, something Qiaoqiao could never hope to match, no matter how hard she tried.
For Liu Banxia, this dinner was like three meals in one. Despite his severe condition the previous night, a good sleep had completely restored him. So, he ate with great satisfaction, clearing his plate.
Seeing Liu Banxia finish off all the steamed spare ribs, Qiu Mingyuan exclaimed with great emotion, "Man, I really envy you. Brother Liu is the only one I truly respect."
"Heh, envious, huh? If you want to be like me, you’ve got to work out. But don’t you have evening self-study? Does your teacher not mind?" Liu Banxia asked curiously.
"Bro, you’re my real bro. I told the teacher I was coming to visit you, and he had no problem with it," Qiu Mingyuan said with a cheeky grin.
"You were already popular at our school, and now you’re even more of a legend. Several of my classmates are planning to change their college applications to Binhai Medical College."
"I even came back with a mission. See this bag I brought? It’s full of notebooks for you to autograph."
Liu Banxia gave him a helpless look. "Really? You’re not pulling my leg, are you?"
"Why would I pull your leg? If you don’t believe me, ask my dad. Otherwise, how could I have stayed at the hospital for so long today? It’s a pity you weren’t awake then," Qiu Mingyuan said regretfully.
"That’s right. We even took a lot of pictures of Banxia," Qiu Huaili chimed in with a smile.
"Alright, alright, stop teasing Banxia. Hurry up and take Qiaoqiao home. She’s exhausted," Wang Jingxian said.
"I’m fine, I can hold on a little longer," Qiaoqiao said quickly. However, right after speaking, she let out a huge yawn, clearly exhausted.
"Alright, Sister Jingxian, we won’t help you clean up then. I still have two days of vacation, so I’ll be back to freeload tomorrow," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
Wang Jingxian smiled and nodded. "Do come over these next two days. Otherwise, it’s just Old Qiu and me for meals, and it gets dull."
As they were leaving, Liu Banxia gave Tiggie a good rub on its forehead. This made Tang Dou envious, and it squeezed its own big head in.
"You just wait. I’ll give you a good scratch when we get home," Liu Banxia said, patting its head.
Hearing this, Tang Dou couldn’t wait and immediately dashed to the front door. Its eager expression amused Qiaoqiao. That little traitor, after I’ve raised it for so long!
Back at their house, Liu Banxia said, "Uncle, you should rest for a bit. After Qiaoqiao takes a shower, I’ll give her a massage to relieve her fatigue. Then I can chat with you."
"You must be tired too, right? Don’t try to keep up with me. Rest if you need to," Qiao Xuezhi said.
"I’ve slept for so long already. I’ll probably stay up a bit later tonight," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
Qiao Xuezhi nodded. They really did need to talk. Although he had accepted Liu Banxia, there were still many things to discuss about the future.
Qiaoqiao was in a good mood. She took a quick shower and then snuggled into bed.
Liu Banxia was skilled at massage, so it was a relaxing task for him. Qiaoqiao was truly exhausted and fell asleep shortly after he began.
Even so, Liu Banxia didn’t cut any corners. I really owe Qiaoqiao so much, and what I can do for her is so limited.
"Don’t drink tea. I’ve brewed some astragalus root water for you," Qiao Xuezhi said when Liu Banxia came downstairs.
"Thank you, Uncle. They say astragalus root can rejuvenate one’s energy and spirit. I’ve never actually tried it," Liu Banxia said.
"What are your thoughts on your future with Qiaoqiao? Don’t have any reservations; just say whatever comes to mind," Qiao Xuezhi asked.
Liu Banxia thought for a moment before slowly replying, "Uncle, honestly, I don’t have any other intentions. Qiaoqiao is so good to me; I just want to follow her wishes."
"As I mentioned when we last spoke, I don’t feel any psychological burden about Qiaoqiao spending money on me. But sometimes Qiaoqiao can be impulsive. If she really follows her whims, who knows how much money might be wasted."
"So, this is something you’ll need to help manage, Uncle. No matter how capable Qiaoqiao is in business, she’s still young. And now that she’s thinking about spending her life with me, I’m genuinely worried she’ll get carried away and lose her head."
After speaking, Liu Banxia grinned and took a gulp of the astragalus root water.
Qiao Xuezhi nodded. "Like I said last time, we should meet your parents at some point. My initial thought was to do it when you had time off, but that’s not feasible now."
"They don’t know about this yet, so I haven’t called them. We’ll tell them once you’ve fully recovered, to save them from worrying."
"And don’t let them make the trip. When you’re back at work, Qiaoqiao and I will visit them personally. Qiaoqiao knows them well, so it won’t be awkward."
"Uncle, thank you for being so considerate," Liu Banxia said quickly.
Qiao Xuezhi waved his hand. "We’re about to be one family, so there’s no need to talk like we’re two separate ones. Besides, I couldn’t have controlled your relationship with Qiaoqiao even if I wanted to."
"Actually, I should be the one thanking you. Because of you, the relationship between Qiaoqiao and me has eased considerably. My original concern was that your demanding job would make Qiaoqiao suffer."
"I’ve come to understand now. Everyone has the life they want to live. For us parents, it’s simple: as long as you two are happy, that’s all that matters."
"The reason I asked you earlier was that I worried your family might feel some pressure. But these things can’t be decided by you alone; I still need to discuss it with your parents."
Liu Banxia smiled and nodded. "In any case, Qiaoqiao and I aren’t worried. Once you elders have decided, we will firmly support and follow through."
This was precisely why he had thanked Qiao Xuezhi earlier. He knew his future father-in-law had considered this point and planned to visit his parents personally.
The Qiao family was prominent and wealthy. Even if they wanted a frugal wedding, how frugal could it really be?
That would lead to a new problem: many people might think he was just a freeloader, and the gossip would burden his parents.
These were all foreseeable issues. Now, his future father-in-law had already taken this into account. He wasn’t just going to make decisions unilaterally but intended to discuss it with Liu Banxia’s parents. That showed respect.
In a marriage between families of such different social standing, is it really so easy to earn the respect of the wealthier side?
Their lifestyles were on different levels, their perspectives different. Qiaoqiao could buy a car worth hundreds of thousands, even millions, without batting an eye. Could that happen in his family?
These were habits formed over a long time. It wasn’t something one would necessarily notice even if they paid attention. Take Qiu Mingyuan, for example. Would he meticulously plan how to spend a hundred yuan?
"Uncle, Qiaoqiao actually cares a lot about you too," Liu Banxia said. "She’s just stubborn. Even if she feels it in her heart, she won’t say it out loud."
"Ah..." Qiao Xuezhi sighed. "I’ve always felt I owe this girl."
"Back then, I never considered her feelings at all. All I could think about was having a son to inherit the family business."
"Don’t laugh. That’s really what I thought then. Thinking about it now, that’s just how it was. When we’re six feet under, how the younger generation lives their lives is beyond our control anyway."
"This realization came a bit late. When the time comes, you’ll have to help Qiaoqiao reconcile with her younger brother. After all, he is her brother, and he thinks about her."
Liu Banxia nodded. "Don’t worry, Uncle. You probably don’t know this, but Qiaoqiao actually has photos of him saved on her phone. I pretend I haven’t seen them; otherwise, she’d get mad at me."
"Really?" Qiao Xuezhi asked, pleasantly surprised.
"How would I dare to fool you about something like this? What older sister doesn’t care about her younger brother? She’s just giving you the silent treatment," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Good, good. That’s wonderful," Qiao Xuezhi said, greatly relieved.
Qiaoqiao’s marriage was one of his concerns, and so was family harmony. Now, thanks to Liu Banxia, there was a positive turn. This son-in-law is a good one.
It’s typical for fathers-in-law when looking at their sons-in-law; they often start with reservations before granting approval. Who wouldn’t feel a bit reluctant when the daughter they’ve raised for so many years is about to be "given away" to someone else? But in the short time Liu Banxia had been around, he had repeatedly changed Qiao Xuezhi’s perceptions, altering his views.
Anyway, the more he saw of Liu Banxia now, the more satisfied he felt, and the better he seemed.
The father-in-law and son-in-law chatted very congenially. This was their first truly meaningful conversation. The previous one didn’t count, as Qiao Xuezhi still held biases then.
They didn’t talk too late. After finishing the astragalus root water, Liu Banxia took Tang Dou upstairs.
Tang Dou had been waiting by the side for ages. Liu Banxia had promised to give it some good scratches once they got home, but he hadn’t gotten around to it. Now, it finally saw its chance. As soon as Liu Banxia changed into his pajamas, Tang Dou slipped onto the bed.
"Don’t be noisy tonight, okay? I’ll take you and Tiggie for a walk in the morning," Liu Banxia said while scratching Tang Dou.
Tang Dou hummed contentedly from its throat, clearly not caring what Liu Banxia was saying. It was enjoying the current moment, and that was all that mattered.
Liu Banxia had indeed slept too much that day. Besides, his body’s recovery ability, enhanced as it was, was very strong. He attended to Tang Dou until it fell asleep, but he himself still didn’t feel the slightest bit sleepy.
There was nothing he could do. Everything else was manageable, but sleeplessness was a problem without an easy solution. He had no choice but to take out a book and read by the bedside lamp.
Last night’s emergency had highlighted the skill gap between him and Zhou Shuwen. He couldn’t even make sense of the kind of ultrasound images Zhou Shuwen was interpreting; he wouldn’t have dared to even guess.
Yet, relying solely on experience, Zhou Shuwen had been perfectly accurate. This level of skill made Liu Banxia very envious and was something he needed to consolidate next.
