Chapter 279: Vixen’s Decision

I set my glass down on the table, and I could tell he was waiting patiently for me to say something.

What am I to say to him?

Earlier, I had more, more to say than I ever had... because I didn’t like how things played out between us. I wanted to talk to him, Esme wanted to, too, but he’s never gonna get that chance. Ever.

What we had... whatever friendship I thought we shared, or understanding, or the last five years. Those were over.

"If I have heard you correctly, not only did you betray the trust you had with Catherine King... you also put their lives in danger."

"Yes, I know that—"

"No, you don’t..." I cut him off before he had a chance to speak.

He had no idea.

"I have a strong source who told me about the hit ordered by Constance King. Their mission was to kill Catherine and take her daughter."

Reed’s eyes widened. "Wh-What?" 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"I guess you didn’t know that..." I said, amused. "But how could you? You must have been in a box."

He shakily fished out his phone and dialed a number

"Fuck!" he cursed quietly when the line didn’t go through.

"I have decided." I pushed to my feet.

Bafflement flashed across his face while I just stared down at him with an empty expression. Internally, a rage of emotions was surging, and I wanted so badly to yell at him and curse him, but then again, what was the point?

"Wait!" He stopped me when I tried to leave. He grabbed my arm, but I reacted; my hand collided with his face.

"Don’t touch me with your filthy hands!" I hissed sharply.

Reed gaped at me with wide eyes like he didn’t expect me to do that.

"I have decided not to help you. I don’t deal with your kind."

"You wanted to hear what I had to say, didn’t you? I told you everything, I told you the truth!"

Right at the corner of my eye, I saw Isaac coming. An idea suddenly popped up.

"Yes, you did," I stepped closer, my look screaming bloodlust. "There’s one thing you didn’t know about me or anyone else, in fact." With a push on his chest, he sat back down. "I’m already affiliated with someone... Don King."

Reed’s expression was painted in shock, and even more so when he saw Isaac.

"N-No, that can’t be right, you’re a stranger."

"Let me reintroduce myself. I’m Vixen, Don King’s secret associate. I was asked to navigate the underground in his stead."

"No—" When Reed tried to move, Isaac held him down, yanked his baseball cap off, and his blond hair came into view.

"Ah... It’s soldier boy. You’re a wanted man."

With a snap of his finger, men came forward and grabbed Reed, taking him away, all the while he was still in shock, probably because he had no idea he had confessed everything to the wrong person.

"That was tricky..." Isaac said. "Don King’s secret associate? Princess specifically told me you two were just exploring the underworld."

"Change of plans..." I said sternly. "The others need to know that I was affiliated with Ares the entire time, and the main reason why I never accepted their offers."

Isaac rubbed his jawline, more intrigued. "It works really well, the sudden appearance of a Vixen who knew how to spend money, associating the entire time with everyone who let their guard down, only to be revealed as a close partner of Don King. You’re gonna have them shitting their pants."

"Spread the word. Can you do that?"

"Only because this sounds like fun. I’ll do what I can, but... to sell this and make the belief you do in fact hold power, you would have to build it..." He pointed to where Reed was taken away. "Just like your little game there... the poor guy confided in you, having no idea he was playing right into your fingers. Can you keep that up? I pictured you to be a sweet little thing, but not a rose with thorns."

"Yes... I will."

After Reed’s confession, it became clearer on what I needed to do. No one is gonna walk all over my husband again.

"What about James?"

"Still alive..."

"I wanna see him."

"After you..." He gave way.

All eyes were on us because my sudden declaration was heard by everyone, and I could tell they felt threatened.

The weeks I had spent playing games and making relations, everyone had something to spill, especially in the heat of the game, and the deals brought to my table. I knew a handful of assets that should have stayed hidden.

In the underworld, power and money weren’t everything—information was just as valuable, and they had offered it to me freely while trying to lobby me to their side.

We made our way back to the office, and Athena was waiting by the door.

"You stormed out there..."

"I know," I conceded. "But it was all worth it."

She narrowed her eyes in a questioning look, and I simply smiled as I walked in.

James was tied to the chair, his face covered in blood. The instant he saw me, he struggled, his sound muffled by the tape concealing his mouth.

"Someone’s scared of you..." Athena giggled. "We should kill him."

"I want him alive."

"What? Why? He made a deal with Constance."

"Deals can be broken..." I walked up to him and ripped off the tape.

"G-Get her away from me!" he barked.

Slap!

The back of my hand collided with his face, and I seized his chin in an iron hold, forcing his gaze on mine.

"I should put a bullet through your skull... or let Medusa have her fun. She likes to cut things."

Fear drowned his eyes.

"But I won’t... You’ll be useful... but first I need you to tell me everything Constance offered you." I released him, straightening my spine. "I’ll double it."

"W-What do you want in return?"

My black-painted lips curved into a broad smile.
