Chapter 147: 122 (second watch)

After treating the wound, he fished out a bottle of medicine powder from his bag. Using the peach wood knife, he parted the flesh and sprinkled the powder inside. As the powder touched the tissue, it turned into red liquid, gradually seeping in. He applied the powder to both cuts. Once the red stains had been absorbed, he dusted them with another layer, then closed the skin over the wounds.

Then, he took a tube of ointment from his bag, spreading it thinly over the entire leg. He wrapped the remaining gauze around the leg. Lan Tian stood up and tossed the bottle to Mo Junhua, looking at the three of them as he said,

"It’s done. Change the dressing every three days for the first month. After one month, every seven days. After three months, change it once every half a month, continuing for two months. Then rest. You can’t stand on it for half a year. Remember what you said earlier; I don’t want anybody to know about this."

"I’m going back now. Are you going to wait here for him to wake up, or?"

His gaze sweeping past Su Qing and Zhang Tian, Lan Tian looked towards Mo Junhua. Mo Junhua glanced at Zhao Li lying on the bed and said, "I’ll see you out first."

"There’s no need," Lan Tian said, his look at Mo Junhua’s face laden with meaning. "You don’t look well. You should stay in the hospital. I remember the way back."

With a carefree wave of his hand, he left. Watching Lan Tian’s departing figure, Mo Junhua suddenly hurried out of the door.

"Battalion commander, are you okay?" Hearing Lan Tian’s words, Su Qing turned to see only the commander striding away, soon disappearing outside the door, leaving no trace. Su Qing, full of confusion, turned to Zhang Tian and asked, "What’s wrong with the commander? Why the rush?"

"How should I know?" The battalion commander and his wife are both odd characters. I’m not the roundworm in his belly, how would I know?

Lan Tian returned to the Military Building and saw Zhou Yuwei wandering lost in thought below. She glanced upstairs then down at her feet, stomping furiously at one point before looking up again. Her face carried an array of expressions.

After venting her frustration in the dormitory, the morose Zhou Yuwei decided to take a walk. Leaving the dorm without purpose, she regained awareness only upon arriving at the foot of the Military Building. With complicated feelings, she stared at the building in a daze until the sound of footsteps made her snap out of it, turning back only to encounter Lan Tian, who had just returned, greeting her with a smile.

"Lan Tian, I was just thinking of visiting you. I got to your building and thought, since you’ve just arrived, the house probably isn’t well arranged yet. I came to see if I could be of any help." She had the appearance of being totally obliging.

Lan Tian paused, not moving forward, a mocking glint in his eyes. He had returned only two days ago and Zhou Yuwei was already eagerly showing up at his door.

Seeing Lan Tian not approaching, Zhou Yuwei had no choice but to come to him. She reached out to hook her hand around Lan Tian’s arm, but Lan Tian sidestepped, avoiding her grasp and leaving Zhou Yuwei’s hand to fall empty.

Zhou Yuwei’s eyes drooped, hiding the anger in them, but when she looked up again, her expression became one of pouting grievance.

Lan Tian scoffed coldly, unaffected by her act.

His demeanor grew even more indifferent as he glanced past her, noticing she frequently looked towards the training field.

Below the Military Building, the training field was populated by people both morning and evening. At dusk, when the air was cool, Military Wives would bring their children out to play. Lan Tian saw the Military Wives glancing over and understood; Zhou Yuwei had deliberately drawn their attention.

"No thanks, Brother Junhua has already taken care of everything at home." Lan Tian spoke indifferently, glancing at Zhou Yuwei, and said, "I’m not close with you; we’ve only met twice. Calling each other so affectionately can easily lead to misunderstandings. If I remember correctly, Brother Junhua’s rank is higher than yours. Next time, Nurse Zhou, just calling me ’sister-in-law’ will do." With that, he walked past her and left.

Zhou Yuwei’s pretty face turned a shade of angry blue. "Brother Junhua, Brother Junhua," she muttered the name with obvious affection, as if afraid others wouldn’t notice her relationship with Mo Junhua.

Lan Tian thought to himself as he walked: So what if Mo Junhua is yours now? Whoever laughs last wins. There’s still a long road ahead; whose Mo Junhua will be is far from certain.

Lan Tian didn’t need Divine Sense to know that Zhou Yuwei despised her to death. What to do? It was thrilling to annoy Bai Lianhua and see her repressing her discomfort. Thinking of Mo Junhua having to stay in the hospital all night, Lan Tian felt even happier, humming a tune while her walk seemed to float on air.

"Lan Tian, I have something to tell you." Zhou Yuwei, who suddenly caught up from behind, was given a detached glance by Lan Tian, who remained silent as she headed towards the Military Building.

It was precisely this aloof gaze, this arrogant demeanor that troubled Zhou Yuwei deeply, as though she was nothing but dust, an insect unworthy of being seen, and Lan Tian was seemingly destined to be enthroned as a goddess, looking down on everyone else, demanding reverence.

Why should it be that way?

She alone seemed to receive all of life’s fortunes—with beauty and family background both, and as for marrying a good man, Mo Junhua was at her side. A harmonious family, having grown up in a ’honey pot’ like a princess.

"It’s about Mo Junhua," Zhou Yuwei said intently, her face full of confidence. No woman could be indifferent to matters about her man, especially when hearing it from another woman.

Lan Tian halted in her tracks, raising an eyebrow as she turned to look back with a drawn-out tone, "Oh?" and then walked away.

Seeing Lan Tian leave without any hesitation, Zhou Yuwei hurried a few steps forward, shouting, "Lan Tian, don’t you want to know what’s between me and Mo Junhua?"

"Oh my, why is Nurse Zhou here?" Tian Xianghua, with her child descending from upstairs, noticed Lan Tian with Zhou Yuwei approaching. "Nurse Zhou, as someone who’s been there, this Military Wife must tell you off. You’re a girl with no sense of shame, speaking without filter. What could you possibly have with Camp Commander Mo?"

Tian Xianghua’s gaze, which Zhou Yuwei found very displeasing, was like one assessing merchandise.

With Tian Xianghua’s arrival, Lan Tian greeted her with a smile and then stood silently. Zhou Yuwei’s pretty face flushed, whether from shame or anger because of Tian Xianghua’s words, she glanced over at Lan Tian. Meanwhile, Lan Tian gazed distantly at the mountains as if oblivious to the veiled hostility between them.

Tian Xianghua chuckled secretly, feigning sudden understanding, "Oh, I get it now! You’re talking about how you’re chasing after Camp Commander Mo all day, right? Who in the army doesn’t know about it! Nurse Zhou, you gave up a promising future at Military District Hospital to pursue Camp Commander Mo and become a low-ranking nurse here. Sadly, though the peach bloom is willing, the well stays indifferent!"

"Pfft!" frёeweɓηovel_coɱ

Lan Tian nearly burst into laughter, her shoulders twitching uncontrollably. Fearing that the other two would notice her, she casually turned her head to look elsewhere.

Tian Xianghua proudly brandished her newly learned slang, glancing disdainfully at Zhou Yuwei, "Camp Commander Mo is a good man and won’t entertain the idea of ’eyes on the pot while eating from the bowl’. I’ve never bothered with other women. Some women, though, they have no shame. It’s as if they’ve never seen a man in their lives, clinging desperately, and what’s more shameless is that she targets married men, claiming to be an educated city girl. Pah, as far I am concerned, all that ’education’ might as well have gone to the dogs. I can’t fathom how their parents raised them, full of nothing but male thieves and female prostitutes, utterly worthless."

Lan Tian’s shoulders shook even more violently.

"Right, Nurse Zhou, what brings you here?" Only after her tirade did Tian Xianghua remember to ask Zhou Yuwei’s purpose.

Zhou Yuwei forced a stiff, awkward smile, her hands at her sides gripping tightly, her fingertips digging into her palms producing a sharp pain that kept her alert. She bore the humiliation with clenched teeth, maintaining her forced smile, deciding that one day she would reclaim her dignity with interest and make them kneel and beg for her forgiveness.

Fortunately, Tian Xianghua had finished speaking, and Zhou Yuwei’s smile was becoming difficult to maintain.

"There’s nothing going on at the clinic, just out for a casual stroll." She didn’t mention her bad mood, lest Tian Xianghua would give her an earful of uglier words.

Tian Xianghua snorted coldly. This ’casual stroll’ sure took her far. Walking from the clinic to the Military Building takes nearly half an hour. Nurse Zhou, lying straight-faced, as if everyone was clueless about her intentions.

Tian Xianghua turned to Lan Tian, "Lan Tian, do you know Nurse Zhou?"
