Chapter 123: Condition for Awakening

โ€œThe greater the despair, the more we need hope,โ€ Sha Ye confessed.

Officer Huang was quiet, while Gao Yang and Qing Ling looked bemused.

Lowering her head slightly, She Ye looked at the platinum wedding band on her ring finger.

โ€œWang Fei and I didnโ€™t really have a choice. We needed hope, needed salvation, needed a purpose to keep holding on. So we had a child. She gave us a new outlook on life.โ€

Sha Ye smiled bitterly. โ€œI know itโ€™s selfish, that itโ€™s more arrogance and foolishness than anything. One day, our child may come to resent me, but I donโ€™t regret it.โ€

Officer Huang shook his head, his eyes glinting with emotions and respect. โ€œThank you. Iโ€™ve gotten the answer Iโ€™m looking for.โ€

Gao Yang could understand Sha Yeโ€™s response logically, but emotionally, he couldnโ€™t resonate with her like Officer Huang did. Now that the topic had been brought up, however, there was something he would like to ask.

Gao Yang asked directly, โ€œSha Ye, when Chen Ying was talking to you about your daughter, was she hoping that your daughter would awaken?โ€

Sha Ye nodded openly. โ€œYes. Thatโ€™s what most members of the organization hope for.โ€

โ€œAwaken?โ€ Officer Huang was shocked. He couldnโ€™t understand. โ€œShe canโ€™t be old enough for that!โ€

Sha Ye calmly explained, โ€œAs you know, the Hundred Rivers Union consists of weaker awakeners, and we only got to where we are today by banding together. Now that the second team has been wiped out, we need new blood to compensate for the serious blow we suffered.โ€

โ€œThen find them elsewhere!โ€ Officer Huang insisted. โ€œYour daughter is still young. This is nonsense!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s easier said than done.โ€ Sha Ye shook her head. โ€œAwakeners with a higher-ranking Talent and even those with two or three Talents have all been recruited by the two major organizations. The Hundred Rivers Union only gets awakeners with Talents ranked a hundred and lower.โ€

She leaned in and continued in an even lower voice, โ€œYouโ€™ve heard about it, havenโ€™t you? About the bottleneck for leveling up.โ€

Officer Huang and Gao Yang shared a confused look.

Qing Ling coolly said, โ€œTalents after serial number 100 can at most reach level 4.โ€

Sha Ye nodded.

โ€œReally?โ€ Officer Huang was surprised. โ€œI didnโ€™t know that.โ€

โ€œWar Tiger told me during training,โ€ said Qing Ling.

Is War Tiger your trainer, Gao Yang grumbled silently, or your personal information broker?

โ€œCorrect.โ€ Sha Ye looked regretful. โ€œMost members of the Union have a Talent after serial number 100. No matter how hard they work, they can only get to level 4.โ€

Gao Yang was suddenly reminded of his Lie Detection and Lucky. Was level 4 really the limit?

He quickly asked, โ€œIs that proven?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no guarantee, but,โ€ Sha Ye went on to ask, โ€œHave you ever heard of an awakener with a 100 or lower Talent reaching level 5?โ€ novelbuddy.co(m)

Gao Yangโ€™s heart sank. He had never heard of a case like that.

โ€œEven so, you shouldnโ€™t go for a child!โ€ Officer Huang went back to their previous conversation.

Sha Ye gave Officer Huang a look. โ€œI think differently. If she has to awaken sooner or later, itโ€™s better to awaken sooner.โ€

Gao Yang thought about it for a moment and agreed, โ€œI think the same. Itโ€™s better to awaken early provided there are adults to protect her.โ€

โ€œI agree.โ€ Qing Ling was all for awakening. It was no surprise that she would hold the same stance.

Sha Ye nodded. There was a flash of conflicted emotions in her eyes. โ€œBut what Iโ€™m debating isnโ€™t having her awaken early or later.โ€

Gao Yang came to the realization. โ€œYouโ€™re thinking about whether to let her awaken at all.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Sha Ye looked lost. โ€œSometimes, I wonder if itโ€™s better to live as a regular human and lead a life of blissful ignorance.โ€

After some hesitation, Gao Yang decided to voice his thoughts. โ€œI believed the same when I first awakened. Wouldnโ€™t it be better if I had lived my whole life in blissful ignorance, without awakening?โ€

He tightened his fists. โ€œBut now, I think differently.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Sha Ye asked.

Gao Yang looked at the four of them in turn and asked seriously, โ€œWhat cause do we have to believe that regular, unawakened humans will be able to live their whole lives in peace?โ€

Sha Ye fell into deep thought.

โ€œWe know nothing about this world.โ€ Gao Yang felt helpless in this regard. โ€œWho can say for sure that the rules will remain the same, that monsters wonโ€™t break the rules one day and kill all humans? Or that the world will remain as it is? Livestock never foresee their slaughter until it happens.โ€

The room was quiet for a few seconds. ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐‘ค๐˜ฆ๐‘๐“ƒโ„ด๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ.๐˜คโ„ด๐‘š

โ€œHeโ€™s right.โ€ Officer Huang sighed and finally lit his cigarette. โ€œIn truth, weโ€™ve encountered such a monster. In the Rune Cave in Gu Familyโ€™s Village, a half-human killed a family of regular humans with extreme cruelty.โ€

Sha Yeโ€™s coffee had long gone cold. She tightened her hands around the mug, her knuckles white.

After ten seconds or so, she looked up with newfound determination in her eyes.

โ€œThank you. Iโ€™ve decided. I will not entrust my daughterโ€™s life to this fucking world! Iโ€™ll have her take control of her own fate!โ€

Everyone was taken aback.

Sha Ye frowned in confusion. โ€œWhat? Have I said something wrong?โ€

โ€œOh, no.โ€ Gao Yang chuckled. โ€œI just didnโ€™t expect you to swear.โ€

Sha Ye shook her head with a self-deprecating smile and tucked her hair behind her ear. โ€œIโ€™m a widow taking care of a daughter. Itโ€™s better to be considered foul-tempered than an easy target for exploitation.โ€

Gao Yang allowed the moment to linger before moving on to another topic, โ€œHow are you going to awaken your daughter, Sha Ye?โ€

Sha Ye paused. โ€œI havenโ€™t given it a serious thought.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve always wondered about the conditions of awakening,โ€ Gao Yang voiced his question.

โ€œThat I can tell you,โ€ said Sha Ye. โ€œThe Hundred Rivers Union did a survey on how awakeners awaken. We have a sizable sample, and generally, there are three different scenarios.โ€

โ€œFirst, one simply acquires a Talent one day.โ€

โ€œSecond, one comes to suspect the reality of the world, or is told the truth by an awakener.โ€

โ€œThird, one witnesses an attack by a monster or becomes a victim themselves.โ€

Officer Huang nodded. โ€œIโ€™m the first type. I acquired my Talent first. Then the second scenario happened.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m the second type,โ€ Qing Ling said. โ€œThen I acquired my Talent not long after.โ€

Gao Yang sighed. โ€œIโ€™m the second type and then the third type. After that, I acquired my Talent.โ€

Sha Ye took a sip of coffee. โ€œAccording to our study, we speculate that the three scenarios are merely the results of the cause rather than the cause itself. There is one important preceding condition.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ asked Gao Yang.

Sha Ye hesitated for a second. โ€œWeโ€™ve just published an internal report, and the Qilin Guild has basically agreed to share the results soon. It should be fine for me to tell you now.โ€

Please just tell us already, lady.

Gao Yang was feeling impatient.

Sha Ye extended a hand. โ€œFor a human to awaken, they must come into physical contact with an awakener.โ€

Gao Yang stifled a gasp. Right, why didnโ€™t I think of that? Itโ€™s so simple!

He turned to Officer Huang. โ€œI got into contact with the man said to be mentally-ill, and for Qing Ling, it must be her cousin. What about you?โ€

Officer Huang shook his head. โ€œI donโ€™t know, but given my job, I get into contact with all sorts of people every day. Itโ€™s very likely for me to run into an awakener without realizing it.โ€

โ€œThat makes sense.โ€ Gao Yang lowered his head deep in thought before looking up at everyone. โ€œI have another question. How did the first ever awakener awaken then?โ€

Sha Ye shook her head.

Officer Huang smiled wryly. โ€œYouโ€™re getting ahead of yourself. How long has it been since your awakening? Yet you are so eager to find all the answers to your questions. What are you, the chosen savior in a rush to get your KPI up?โ€

Gao Yang smiled in embarrassment. โ€œThatโ€™s a bad habit of mine.โ€

โ€œI was just like you back then and kept risking myself for answers.โ€ Officer Huang clicked his tongue. โ€œI was lucky to run into Sir Jiang, or Iโ€™d already be six feet under, and the weed around my grave wouldโ€™ve been two-meter tall already.โ€

Sha Ye didnโ€™t know who Sir Jiang was, but she got the gist of what Officer Huang was saying. She nodded in agreement. โ€œThere are too many mysteries about the world, too many answers that are beyond our ability to reach. Perhaps itโ€™s safer for us to learn them later.โ€

Gao Yang understood that Officer Huang was worried about him. He nodded and didnโ€™t say anything else.

Bam!

Then the door slammed open, and Chen Ying rushed in.

โ€œCome with me! Jiang Haoโ€™s awake!โ€
