Chapter 1140: Understand?

Wang Zikai’s arrival cut off Telepathy and threw a wrench into their plan. At least Liao Liao could still monitor the dining room conversation with Keen Hearing. The unspoken messages weren't lost on any of them.

Nine Frost lost his composure for the first time. He wasn’t sure if they should keep watching or provide aid immediately. It was then Gao Yang, his uncle, Gao Xinxin, and Wang Zikai suddenly vanished—they had entered the Judge’s domain.

Qing Ling's face darkened as she leaped onto her Tang Dao and took flight. Nine Frost made his decision and rushed forward, but they had barely reached the front yard when the four reappeared.

Since the two death monsters had discovered them, they gave up on hiding and readied for a fight.

Relief washed over them when they learned of Judge's restriction—the death monsters couldn't kill any awakeners before the Battle of the Curtain Call.

They looked at Wang Zikai, their once companion, with conflicting feelings. But the moment didn't last. Wang Zikai merely glanced up, and an overwhelming presence crashed into them like a tidal wave. Even knowing he was bound by Judge's rules couldn't stop their instinctive terror. They were ants beneath the shadow of a titan.

This was deliberate. Though Wang Zikai couldn't kill them now, he wouldn't let them forget their place.

Almost everyone bent their back and lowered their head involuntarily; even Qing Ling, War Tiger, and Vermilion Bird had to consciously fight the rising fear in their hearts to maintain their gaze on Wang Zikai.

One alone looked no different from usual—Zhang Wei, looking sad and frustrated. He clenched his fists and stepped forward. “Brother Kai.”

“Ah, you’re here as well, Zhang Wei.” Wang Zikai hadn’t bothered to scan the crowd for the individual faces, so he only noticed Zhang Wei now.

“Why, Brother Kai?” Zhang Wei’s voice cracked. “You don’t seem like a monster to me. Aren’t you just the same as before? You and Brother Yang were so close. Why must you walk down this path?”

Wang Zikai took a step forward. “Remember what you said before, Zhang Wei?”

“What?”

“You said that I was God.” Wang Zikai tilted his head up, pride etched onto his handsome face. “God has His duty. Killing Gao Yang is—”

“Bullshit!” Zhang Wei shouted. “Were you God, you would be omnipotent! You should be able to do whatever you want and refuse whatever you don’t want to do!”

He lunged forward, seizing Wang Zikai's shoulders. Spittle flew as he shouted directly into Wang Zikai's face.

That startled everyone.

It was like watching an unruly child fall into a tiger den at the zoo, and while everyone else was having a heart attack, he went up to a tiger and pinched its face.

“Brother Kai, I don’t believe you really want to kill Brother Kai! You don’t, do you? You’re God! You’re not ruled by another. You don’t have to carry out whatever bullshit duty you’re laden with!”

Wang Zikai blinked, then burst into laughter. He laughed so hard that he had tears in his eyes. He doubled over and propped himself up by holding Zhang Wei’s shoulders.

“What’s so funny about that?!” Zhang Wei asked in anger and an even greater befuddlement. “Have I said anything wrong?”

When Wang Zikai had finally laughed enough, he straightened. “You’re wrong, Zhang Wei. I’m not the kind of god you’re picturing. I’m one created by humans.”

“You created me. I answered your call.”

“You hope for salvation. Closure is your salvation.”

“The end of humanity is closure, and the end of closure is God.”

Wang Zikai patted Zhang Wei on the shoulder. “Do you understand?”

Zhang Wei opened his mouth, but words failed him.

Wang Zikai cocked his head and tapped on his temple. “Think, Zhang Wei, think carefully. Stop being the confident guy with the lowest intelligence.”

Then he seemed to have lost interest in this exchange. He spared the others no glance, as if they were merely part of the background. With a hand in his pocket, he slowly walked out of the front yard. Putting his sunglasses back on at the curb, he looked around. “Ah, what a nice day. Perfect for playing games at home.”

He vanished, leaving only a gust in his wake.

Only a selected few were able to catch a glimpse of his afterimage. Given his speed, if Wang Zikai attacked them from within thirty meters, even War Tiger at full attention couldn't draw his blade in time, let alone resist.

What a wimp, War Tiger cursed at himself. The last time he felt this helpless was watching his drunk father beat his mother.

For others, helplessness didn’t even begin to describe their feelings; they felt a despair they couldn’t put into words.

“He’s gone,” Chen Ying said softly just to confirm she was still breathing. Sensory could detect any higher lifeforms within three kilometers, yet it had only taken Wang Zikai a few seconds to go beyond the range.

Qing Ling and Vermilion Bird rushed into the house first. They found Gao Yang crouched beside his uncle, who lay unconscious on the floor. Blood stained his clothes, and his face had gone sheet-white. An empty adrenaline shot for awakeners lay nearby.

Vermilion Bird knelt and took the man's hand, closing her eyes. Seconds passed before she finally exhaled a long breath.

“He’s in critical condition, but he’ll live.”
