The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1043: Clash
Chapter 1043: Clash
Northern entrance of Green Lotus Park.
Shrouded in Golden Armor, Gao Yang charged at Qilin.
Qilin didn’t move. The puppets behind him stepped out at the same time to attack Gao Yang.
Bang, bang, bang—
Wielding two guns, Liao Liao fired multiple times at Gao Yang and his possible dodging directions. Gao Yang couldn’t avoid them all unless he teleported away.
However, Gao Yang hadn’t done that; he had noticed the thin poisonous wind surrounding him at a meter’s distance, waiting for him to teleport into it.
If he got poisonous wind clinging to him, he would have to dissolve the Golden Armor, and it would be some time before he could use the skill again. That was too great a risk.
Facing the poison that could kill him at contact, the Golden Armor was essentially an extra life, and it also provided great protection against other attacks.
Gao Yang continued to rush forward, reinforcing the energy protecting his head, heart, and knees. Indeed, those were the targets three of the shots hit.
With level 6 God of Firearms, the bullets didn’t injure Gao Yang, but the impact did slow him down somewhat. Seizing the opening, Zhong He’s corpse rushed toward Gao Yang, armored in shadow and arms morphing into two thin, long shadow blades.
Sorrow flashed through Gao Yang’s heart. Then his gaze became more determined.
Clang!
Gao Yang injected energy into the Green Dog Demon Blade, the golden blade aura catching Zhong He’s shadow blade without trouble.
Pzzt.
The shadow blade destabilized and burst into black strands.
Gao Yang dropped down to sweep his leg toward Zhong He’s, but then he sensed danger striking—the shadow blade’s destabilization was a feint! The bursting black strands snaked toward Gao Yang, and the shadow beneath Zhong He’s feet wound toward the tip of Gao Yang’s feet. Phantom was going to grapple Gao Yang. Moreover, small gray spots flowed within the shadow—Patient’s slow-acting virus!
Spirit Domain!
Gao Yang conjured a small domain to triple his speed. He leaped away from the shadow circling his feet and dove toward the black strands grasping at him parallel to the ground, escaping through a slightly wider gap.
He brushed past Zhong He, the long blade in his hand slicing across Zhong He’s left calf. The shadow armor didn’t stop the blade from leaving a cut.
In Zhong He’s eyes, it was as if Gao Yang had suddenly vanished. Then his calf went limp. He lost his balance and toppled to the side.
The moment he collapsed, he twisted around and spread his arms at Gao Yang, stripping himself of the armor to send eighteen shadow soldiers after Gao Yang.
They were so unusually fast that they instantly caught up with Gao Yang and circled him.
Gao Yang only had eyes for Qilin. He continued to charge ahead, not even sparing the shadow soldiers a glance.
A second later, the legion stabbed their weapons at Gao Yang but didn’t hurt him; instead, they vanished like bubbles. The shadow soldiers were merely illusions Qilin created for Gao Yang.
Gao Yang had seen through it. Although Qilin’s illusion still seemed vivid like holograms, thanks to overcoming the sweet dream of victory earlier, he could now better differentiate between the real and the fake than anyone.
He had a quicker and safer option to close in on Qilin after getting out of the Absolute Barrier, but he didn’t do so. The reasons were twofold:
First, he had to leave openings for Qilin to attack him with puppets; while doing so, Qilin couldn’t use Unreachable.
Second, he was making it so that Qilin couldn’t accurately judge his speed. It was more difficult to deal with an enemy accelerating suddenly than accelerating constantly.
Now, there were only ten meters between Gao Yang and Qilin.
Spirit Domain!
Time passage shrunk to a third!
Flash Shadow!
Whoosh. The move was beyond others’ perception. Even Qilin, with his psychic senses pushed to the maximum and Mind’s Eye activated, only caught a flash.
Gao Yang reappeared beside Qilin. The Green Dog Demon Blade sliced horizontally toward Qilin’s neck, imbued with golden energy.
A radiant aura surged from the blade, which quickly turned red and burst into fierce flames at several thousand degrees.
Amid the flames, Qilin remained unmoving even as the blade made contact with his neck. He had long armored himself with Phantom and activated Muscles, Bone Growth, Hedgehog, and Bullseye to push his defense to a tremendous height.
He never intended to use Unreachable. Having seen through Gao Yang’s plan, he waited for Gao Yang to get close and take the hit head-on.
Gao Yang immediately felt an intangible, irresistible counterforce hit him; it was damage reflected by Hedgehog!
The melee damage was reflected at 25%. The pain hit Gao Yang like a wooden rod ramming into a bell, cracking his Golden Armor, and the energy pathway in his body took a blow.
The reflected damage caught him off guard. It was his first time thinking that having high damage output might not be all good.
Almost at the same time, God of Water and Frost struck in concert.
The pool of water beneath Qilin’s feet thrust at Gao Yang as a dozen currents, freezing instantly into sharp, hard stings. The earlier impact on his energy pathway temporarily prevented him from using Teleportation.
With his superhuman reflex, Gao Yang cut three of the ice stings with the blade in his right hand, broke one with the dagger in his left, and then twisted his body to dodge several more.
He couldn’t get away without being hit once, though. An ice sting caught his calf. It was fortunate that the Golden Armor stopped it from breaking skin, but some of Patient’s slow-acting virus did get on him. It was only a matter of time before the virus would penetrate.
Patient’s virus and Pestilence’s poisonous wind were two ends of the spectrum. The latter was a quick blade, while the former was flowing water.
A quick blade could kill in the blink of an eye, but could just as easily hurt the wielder. It required caution. Meanwhile, the flowing water was gentle and could be hidden in the wielder’s body to be combined with other Talents at will. It was flexible and would not hurt the user.

After the brief clash, Gao Yang immediately teleported away, his energy pathway having recovered.
Or he tried to.
After a flash, he remained in the same spot.
