The Chef Rules the Last Days-Chapter 469 - 467: World Trade Center
Chapter 469: Chapter 467: World Trade Center
Lu Chen was somewhat vigilant when he heard Jianxiong say this, even pulling Su Mo closer to his side, but she didn’t take it seriously and took out a cold, bloodied wild boar and put it on the ground.
Yang Yichu licked his pale lips, his eyes adorned with black pupils unable to suppress the glint of hunger for food.
"It’s okay," Su Mo tugged at Lu Chen’s sleeve, crouched down, skillfully cut off a few pieces of meat and cleaned them before handing them to Yang Yichu, "Eat."
Obediently, it picked up the cold pieces of meat and ate them slowly.
Su Mo also helped it clean its blood-stained hands and made sure it was well-fed before saying:
"Command the farthest zombie you can control, towards the east. I suspect something is coming from that direction. Lead a zombie to check it out."
Yang Yichu nodded. Anything that could threaten Su Mo’s safety deserved its serious attention.
Soon, its small figure stood erect, eyes vacant, as it emitted a vast amount of grey spiritual power, exploring towards the east through numerous eyes.
The Spiritual Superpower User who had just handed over the shift and lay down sat up with a start, a strong palpitation making his body tremble violently. He immediately released his spiritual power to scan the surroundings, but that sensation disappeared in an instant.
His spiritual power didn’t discover anything; clutching his forehead, his eyes went from horrified to calm. Was he overthinking?
Though, in the sight of the controlled zombie that Yang Yichu was observing from beneath the escalator, things were shaking. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
It was an enormous leopard, and before its head was bitten off, it saw a pack of Mutant Beasts behind it.
The vision went dark.
Yang Yichu withdrew his superpower and after regaining clarity, his small face froze with an expression which Su Mo noticed was abnormal.
Its mouth was firmly closed, and fierce light suddenly flashed in its pitch-black eyes, seemingly threatened, its fur bristling.
"Is something wrong?" Su Mo asked, bending over with tension in her voice.
Its neck stiff, it nodded slightly, "Many Mutant Beasts’ footsteps. It was, in one bite, its head was bitten off, the connection severed."
"A horde of Mutant Beasts?" Su Mo straightened up quickly, looking at Lu Chen, and both saw the gravity in each other’s eyes.
"This is no joke—last time, just one Mutant Bear gave us a tough time," Su Mo paced back and forth in the corridor.
Lu Chen looked down, asking in a cold voice, "Are they moving from north to south?"
Yang Yichu seemed to ponder his words, stumbling over his reply, "Don’t know, where they’ll go. They’re coming from the east, they’re a threat."
Su Mo stopped pacing. In the empty corridor, her echoing voice said, "No, if they were coming from the north, that would be the same direction as the refugee camps. Could they have coincidentally bypassed P city? Otherwise, we wouldn’t have failed to notice them."
"You make a good point," Lu Chen mused for a moment before adding, "They don’t pose an immediate threat, but the Beast Tide has reminded us, our defenses are too weak."
Just an earth wall and Gold Element Superpower Users’ outer layer. Such strength could easily be shattered by a slightly stronger impact.
Su Mo thoroughly agreed, patted Yang Yichu’s head, and put it back in the System Bag to rest, "This is no less threatening than a horde of zombies. The difference is, if there’s an accident, we won’t be as lucky as before."
"The priority now is to transport soil back from Yellowstone City and gather food on the way," Lu Chen pulled her shoulder closer, speaking in a grave voice, "They are right behind us. We need to speed up our journey."
"We’ll set out as soon as it’s light."
Early in the morning, just as the sky began to lighten, Lu Chen had already woken everyone up and folded the tents, briefly informing Jin Han about the situation.
He took their words for it, instructing his men to speed up the packing, and the group set off again.
The building that was burned down was only half-standing, and from a distance, it exuded a sense of despair that was hard to articulate.
To save time and search for more food, they decided to cut straight through the small town.
On the vehicle, through the walkie-talkie at Lu Chen’s side, came the voice of the Spiritual Superpower User,
"Report, we can go straight through that burned-down building. The zombies aren’t concentrated there, they’ve scattered quite a bit over the night."
"I’ll lead the way," Lu Chen took over the conversation, the vehicle making a turn and heading towards the station in the direction of the high-rise.
The morning air was initially fresh, but as they approached the high-rise, the distinctive smell of charred ruins seeped into the vehicle from the windows.
Indeed, the zombies here were not in large groups, with most being around Level 2 or 3.
Occasionally, some zombies would run fast enough to grab onto the iron netting on the windows, but Su Mo effortlessly took them down with a spindle materialized in her right hand.
Chunks of concrete fell onto the roof of the vehicle due to the tilt of the high-rise. Although only half of the building had collapsed, the remaining half stood at an angle, presenting a shocking sight.
A human corpse laid amongst the rubble; Su Mo glanced over as she passed by, quickly realizing it was one of the survivors from yesterday. It looked like they had failed to grab onto a rope and fell through the flames, their body crushed and almost completely burned.
Jianxiong, seated in the back, suddenly leaned forward with excitement and pointed at the Food City sign that was toppled to one side, the middle of the character for "street" was missing.
"Food City! This small town isn’t half bad; they have this thing. If we’re lucky, we might scavenge some extra stock!"
Lu Chen picked up the walkie-talkie and spoke to those behind him in a deep voice, "There’s a Food City ahead of us. We’ll check it out, five minutes to scavenge."
Jin Han: "Received."
The vehicles parked in a row near the entrance, with Su Mo being the first to jump out of the car and walk over to the sign. She made out the faded small letters next to the large font, "World Trade Center, 4th floor."
"This isn’t nearby. It’s more like it fell from somewhere," she said, stepping on the dirty sign.
Everyone got out of the vehicles, dealt with a few approaching zombies, and began searching.
"The World Trade Center? Isn’t that right next to that building that got hit? I even glanced at it when we passed by; it’s just behind us to the right," a superpower user remarked, turning around and pointing backwards.
Su Mo turned and looked in the direction he indicated; her eyes paused.
The World Trade Center had the upper half of another building embedded into it. Sparks and rubble flew down from the middle, and its appearance was extremely frightening.
"So the upper half that fell off yesterday hit this," Jianxiong squinted towards it, turning back to ask, "What do you think, boss? Shall we check it out?"
"It won’t collapse, will it?" Jin Han was somewhat wary.
The Spiritual Superpower User had done a quick scan of the building and, upon finding several red dots, said, "There are 4 living people inside, on the fourth floor."
"Then there must be food there," Su Mo said.
"Let’s check it out," Lu Chen decided.
