Chapter 1: The Gal-like Junior Who Speaks Casually

As soon as the bell signaling the end of the school day rang, I was already in the Student Council room.

I was the Vice President until recently, but now as the Student Council President, I find myself here almost every day.

“As usual, there’s a lot to do today.”

The Student Council Executive Committee has an unexpectedly large amount of work.

The glamorous activities that people generally imagine are only a small part of it. The majority of the work is menial.

It’s not the kind of stuff you’d typically have students do.

Someone has to take care of it, but teachers are too busy. That’s why these tasks end up with the Student Council.

There’s also the creation of the Student Council newspaper and documents, preparation for events, negotiations between students and teachers, external publicity, and exchanges… The list of minor tasks is virtually endless.

Really, being the Student Council President is like drawing the short straw.

And moreover…

“…Am I alone again today?”

The Student Council room, empty of others, is quiet once again today.

The Student Council elections were just the other day.

Since the major events are still a way off, we’re thinking of getting into full swing a little later.

It should be sufficient to start after the winter break.

Even so, there are plenty of menial tasks, but fortunately, they’re not impossible to handle alone. I’ll just take care of them.

I can concentrate better by myself anyway…

I boot up the slightly expensive, thin laptop that we bought with the Student Council budget.

Today’s task is to create materials for distribution to each class.

“Sensei should be doing this…”

I grumble unintentionally.

About half of the menial tasks are due to the Student Council Advisor.

Having done this since last year, I’ve become accustomed to creating documents.

I continue to type sentences relentlessly while sipping coffee.

Having a well-equipped room with an electric kettle and a refrigerator is one of the perks of the Student Council room.

“I want to go home by six.”

Aiming to be home on time… am I a corporate slave or what?

Normally, I would spend the time alone and head home around dusk. That’s my routine.

However, today was a little different.

“Sorry for the intrusion.”

The girl who entered the Student Council room with a light tone was Ooba Monaka, the same girl I had a run-in with this morning.

Despite it being November, she wore a skirt shortened to the limit, and her school bag had a plush toy attached to it that was too large to be just a strap.

Her hair was a solid blonde, and it was apparent that she was wearing natural makeup.

Yep, looking at her again, she’s definitely a gal.

“Oh, there you are.”

Ooba looked at my face and her expression bloomed into a smile.

She marched right into the Student Council room and placed her school bag on the central long table.

“You really were the Student Council President, Senpai.”

“How rude of you to suddenly say that. I did give my inaugural address to new students.”

“There’s no way I’d remember that.”

Despite having given a speech in front of the entire student body in the gymnasium, it seems she didn’t remember it at all.

Well, I guess it’s an uninteresting event for the majority, so it can’t be helped.

Perhaps the only reason she knew I was the Student Council President must have been because Shirahata-Sensei mentioned it.

“So, what do you want here?”

“Don’t look at me like I’m bothering you.”

She laughed heartily and sat down in front of me.

“Thanks for earlier! I mean it, thank you very much!”

“You came all the way here just to say thanks?”

“Yeah! I was really close to getting expelled, so you seriously saved me~”

Ooba bowed her head in gratitude.

Well, she would have at least been suspended if I hadn’t helped her.

Our high school doesn’t fuss over dyed hair or accessories, but smoking is definitely not overlooked.

Just possessing cigarettes is grounds for expulsion. I think someone was expelled for that very reason last year.

Not that I intend to hold my help over her head.

“No problem. I just couldn’t overlook it, so don’t worry about it.”

“Eh, that’s kind.”

“It’s not like that. I just don’t like people who act all high and mighty using their authority as a shield.”

“And yet you’re doing the Student Council President thing?”

“I’m an exception.”

“That’s funny.”

Well, regardless of how suspicious Ooba might have seemed, Shirahata-Sensei didn’t even listen to her side of the story.

I don’t know much about her usual behavior, but at least it was tyrannical at that moment.

“But I really am happy that you helped me.”

“Is that so?”

“Yeah. Because of my appearance, I’ve always been misunderstood, seen as an enemy, or even when I’m serious, people think I’m just messing around… It’s always been like that. Well, at some point, I started to act and dress the part too.”

Ooba muttered so and looked down.

Up close, it was clear her features were frighteningly well-defined.

She was beautiful, but at the same time, there was an aura about her that made her seem unapproachable.

“But Senpai, you still helped me out. Even though there was nothing in it for you, in fact, it was more of a loss.”

“There was a gain. I get to talk with a cute junior like this.”

“Stop pretending because I know you don’t mean it… but that’s kind of you too. You’re careful not to make it seem like I owe you?”

That’s pretty much how I really feel.

“Anyway, I’m truly grateful, okay? Just accept it quietly!”

“Oh, got it. You’re welcome. Is that good enough? I’m busy right now.”

“Wow, treating your cute junior so coldly, that’s the worst.”

“You said ‘cute junior’ to yourself huh.”

Ooba chuckled carefreely.

I always had the impression she was aloof and grumpy, but it seems she has a cute side too.
