Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Let’s Get Divorced

Rona Langdon, however, hadn’t had her fill yet. She stood at the door and called out to them, "Come back and visit tomorrow!"

A few of the ladies called back in agreement, and Zachary Preston’s expression grew even darker.

Vera Xavier brought the dishes to the table. Guilt flickered in Zachary Preston’s eyes. Noticing Cara Preston wasn’t there, he asked, "Did Cara go to her classmate’s house to study again?"

Vera Xavier nodded. Zachary Preston frowned, then said, "When Cara gets back, I’ll talk to her and tell her not to go to her classmate’s house to study anymore. If she’s home, you can ask her about anything you don’t understand."

Vera Xavier knew he meant well, so she nodded.

But Rona Langdon flew into a rage. "It’s useless even if Cara is at home! With Vera’s IQ and grades, she’ll never be a good student in her entire life, not unless a scholarly god descends into our home."

Zachary Preston didn’t want to argue with her, but she kept droning on and on. "If you ask me, Vera isn’t cut out for studying. Once she’s done with the placement test on Friday, she should just go find a job. I hear that even the assembly line workers over there make over a thousand a month..."

Neither Vera Xavier nor Zachary Preston said a word to her. In the end, she made the decision herself: "That settles it."

Zachary Preston ignored her and asked Vera, "Is your wound feeling any better?"

Vera nodded. "I’m fine, Dad. Don’t worry." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

"Do your best on the test Friday," Zachary Preston said. "Even if it doesn’t go as well as you hope, as long as you’re making progress, I’ll support you continuing your studies. If you don’t get into a university this year, you can just repeat the year and try again."

Rona Langdon was having none of it. She slammed her chopsticks on the table. "Preston, what do you mean by that?"

Zachary Preston shot her an icy glare. "Rona Langdon, you’d better get one thing straight. I am the head of this household, and I have the absolute final say on all family matters."

Rona Langdon was stunned for a moment, then immediately burst into tears. "You’re heartless! Everything I’ve done all these years has been for this family! I get up at the crack of dawn to cook for you and clean the house. I’m always the first one up and the last one to bed! And now I can’t even have a say in this house anymore? If you’re going to treat me like this, I’m going back to my mother’s!"

Zachary Preston was fed up. He gave her a cold look. "Before you go back to your mother’s, let’s get a divorce."

Rona Langdon was so shocked she forgot all about making a scene. She stared at him in disbelief. "You... you want to divorce me!?"

"If you keep causing this kind of drama at home every day, I can’t take it anymore. If that’s the case, we might as well get a divorce," Zachary Preston said, his voice ice-cold.

Rona Langdon immediately panicked. She had always known Zachary Preston was a man of his word. When he said he wanted a divorce, it absolutely wasn’t an empty threat to scare her. Her first instinct was to throw a fit, but she didn’t quite dare.

So she wiped away a tear and choked out, "Zachary Preston, you heartless man!"

After she spoke, she went upstairs, and ultimately, never mentioned going back to her mother’s house again.

Vera glanced upstairs and asked quietly, "Dad, aren’t you going to go console Mom?"

"There’s no need," Zachary Preston said quietly. "She’s gone too far with many things lately. This will give her a chance to think things through, so she’ll stop being so foolish."

He had been growing increasingly dissatisfied with Rona Langdon. In the past, he’d just seen her as blunt. Even when she went a little too far with certain things, he wouldn’t hold it against her. But her recent attitude toward Vera was something he could no longer tolerate.
