Aaron Cheney shivered pathetically, then nodded.
Seeing his reaction, Vera Xavier breathed a sigh of relief. ’If he hadn’t agreed, I really wouldn’t have known how to handle this with him.’
After entering the large compound, the two went straight to the Preston Family’s home. Cara Preston happened to be standing at the door. When she saw them riding over on their bikes, talking and laughing, her hands immediately balled into fists. ’It was Aaron Cheney who ruined my plans last time!’
She smiled and said, "Sister, how come you’re back with Aaron Cheney? And you got a new bike? Huh, why did you change your clothes too?"
Vera couldn’t be bothered to answer her. She turned her head to thank Aaron Cheney. Aaron smiled, dropped off the bike, and left the Preston residence without lingering.
Cara Preston frowned when Vera ignored her. Just then, Rona Langdon and Zachary Preston came downstairs. They both froze for a moment when they saw two brand-new bicycles parked in the yard.
Cara immediately piped up with a smile, "Aaron Cheney just rode back with Sister. Sister, you didn’t go out on a date with him, did you?"
Hearing this, Rona Langdon’s voice jumped an octave. "Someone like her, trying to get her hooks into Aaron Cheney? His father is a real bureau director! Their family would never accept a girl like you who was raised in the countryside!"
"Shut up!" Zachary Preston barked upon hearing that. Rona Langdon pouted. He looked at Vera and asked, "What’s going on?"
Vera recited the excuse she had concocted on the way home. "Today, when I went to get my shoes repaired, I happened to see someone who had been pulled out of the river. They weren’t breathing, so I used the life-saving method Mrs. Xavier taught me back in the countryside to perform CPR on them. I revived them, but my bike was stolen in the process. The family of the person I saved felt bad, so they compensated me with two new bicycles. Aaron Cheney happened to see what was going on, so he helped me by riding one of them back. They also gave me a change of clothes. That’s what happened."
"What family is that cheap? You saved their family member’s life, and they only gave you two bicycles! Vera Xavier, you take me to find them. We have to make them cough up at least a thousand or two!" As soon as Rona Langdon heard there was a chance to profit, she completely forgot about Cara’s earlier insinuation, her eyes gleaming as she plotted how to extort them.
Zachary Preston’s face turned ashen when he heard that. Vera wasn’t the least bit surprised Rona would say such a thing. She stated calmly, "They paid for the bikes and left. I don’t know who they were."
Rona immediately felt a pang of loss, as if a piece of her own heart had been carved out. She pointed a finger at Vera’s forehead and screeched, "I’ve never seen anyone so stupid! You couldn’t even handle something so simple! You’re a brainless fool! Tell me, what good are you even for?!"

Rona had said things like this before, but back then, Zachary had thought she was just talking, just joking around. He’d seen it as her being frank and unpretentious. But now, he knew the truth: Rona really did want to extort those people.
He said in a cold voice, "It’s getting late. Let’s go to the Nathan Family’s."
Rona muttered a few more curses at Vera until Cara tugged on her arm and gestured toward Zachary’s dark expression. Only then did she restrain herself, though she still felt as if she had missed out on a fortune.
