The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 163: Serves You Right
Behind Grandma’s house was a large bamboo forest. In the forest lived an animal called the bamboo rat, whose meat was quite delicious.
Bamboo rats weren’t easy to catch, but Grandma was an expert. She just didn’t hunt them often now that she was older. After taking Vera Xavier into the forest, she came back with one in less than half an hour.
Vera Xavier had actually eaten bamboo rat in her past life, but this was her first time actually catching one. She was thrilled and chattered away with her grandma, holding her hand as they talked about this and that.
On the way, an acquaintance greeted Grandma and asked, "Whose lovely young lady is this? She’s so pretty!"
"My granddaughter is beautiful, of course! Vera, this is Madam Archer," Grandma said with a smile.
Vera Xavier called out sweetly, "Hello, Madam Archer!"
Madam Archer immediately praised Vera Xavier to the skies, and Grandma was all smiles. When the two of them returned home carrying the bamboo rat, Cara Preston shrieked in terror, "Ah! A giant rat!"
Grandma explained, "This isn’t a giant rat. It’s a bamboo rat. We’re having it for lunch today."
"I’m not eating that! It looks disgusting!" Cara Preston said, grinding her teeth.
"Suit yourself." Grandma couldn’t be bothered with her and took Vera Xavier to prepare the bamboo rat.
Cara Preston pulled on Rona Langdon’s arm. "Mom, say something to my sister! We finally made a trip back home, and she’s tricking Grandma into feeding us rats!"
Rona Langdon said with a cold expression, "This Vera Xavier is just disgusting!"
Although that’s what she said, she didn’t dare say much more on Grandma’s turf, so she naturally placed all the blame on Vera Xavier.
Vera Xavier helped Grandma with the earthen stove, skillfully handling everything from cooking rice to stir-frying dishes. Seeing that she didn’t have a trace of a city girl’s spoiled attitude, Grandma grew fonder and fonder of her. She didn’t treat her like a guest, pulling her in to help prepare the bamboo rat, wash the vegetables, and cook the meal.
At lunchtime, Cara Preston and Rona Langdon, who had originally refused to eat the bamboo rat, ended up eating the most. Grandma watched from the side with a look of utter disdain.
After lunch, Vera Xavier went for a stroll around the village by herself.
Crestfall was in the south, a region surrounded by mountains. Unlike northern villages where houses were built in neat, tightly packed rows, the homes here were scattered about—one to the east, another to the west.
Fish ponds dotted the village, the rice seedlings in the paddies were growing perfectly, and crops like soybeans on the hillsides were lush and green. The crow of a rooster or the bark of a dog would occasionally break the silence. It was a picturesque rural scene, and her mind grew calm along with it.
Vera Xavier loved the tranquility here. She sat on the grass, gently closed her eyes, and savored the comfort and peace that nature brought to her soul.
Suddenly, she heard an extremely faint footstep. It was a sound she wouldn’t have been able to hear in her past life, but since being reborn with X-ray vision, her hearing had also become much sharper.
She remained seated, not moving or opening her eyes. She sensed the person come to a stop behind her. Just as they raised their foot for a vicious kick, she dodged to the side. The attacker had put too much force into the kick, and having missed Vera Xavier, they let out a miserable shriek and tumbled down the hillside like a ball.
At the bottom of the hill was a pond. With a loud SPLASH, the person rolled right into it.
Vera Xavier opened her eyes. A smile played on her lips as she watched Cara Preston floundering in the water. ’It really is her!’
Summer had just begun, and a heavy rain a few days prior had left the pond very deep. Cara Preston had tumbled in backward and was already swallowing mouthfuls of muddy water.
