The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 148: One of Our Own
"Yeah, I saw him," Vera Xavier answered quite calmly.
Shane Caldwell had expected her to get all excited at the mention of Nathaniel Nathan, just like any other girl, and had braced himself. But after a moment, all he got was that one sentence. He couldn’t help but ask, "That’s it?"
Vera looked utterly baffled. "How else am I supposed to be?"
For some reason, her response made Shane inexplicably happy. He smiled and said, "That’s great. Nathaniel Nathan isn’t as amazing as all the other girls make him out to be. He’s just a guy with two eyes, a nose, and a mouth."
Vera found Shane’s happiness truly baffling. She gave him a sidelong glance and, seeing the shine in his eyes, couldn’t resist asking, "Don’t tell me you like Nathaniel Nathan, too?"
Shane was taking a sip of water at that moment. When he heard her question, he sprayed it all out. Luckily, they were sitting in the front row, so no one was in front of them.
After a few coughs, he wiped the water from the corner of his mouth and said, "What are you talking about! I’m a guy! How could I possibly like another guy?"
Vera gave him a wicked grin. "You never know."
’He’ll never know that in about ten years, online literature will take off, giving rise to a genre called BL...’
Shane felt a little creeped out by her stare, yet he also found her mischievous smile surprisingly cute. His face reddened involuntarily as he said stiffly, "Nonsense!"
Vera had previously found him narcissistic, self-important, and thoroughly annoying. But seeing him like this, she decided that this kind of awkward, vain boy wasn’t entirely without his charms. It was even a little fun to tease him when she was bored.
’But I’m not some bored teenage girl anymore,’ she thought. ’I’m carrying a lot on my shoulders and I have a clear goal, so I have to study hard.’
She went back to grinding through her practice problems. Shane couldn’t help but ask again, "Vera Xavier, what university are you aiming for?"
"Veridia University," Vera answered. It was her goal, so there was nothing to hide.
Shane practically choked again. "Veridia University is incredibly hard to get into. Only one or two people from all of Crestfall make it in each year."
"So what?" Vera said. "Then I’ll just be one of them."
If she had said that before the mock exams, Shane would have probably treated it as a joke. But now, looking at the confident girl before him, he inexplicably found himself believing that she really did have the ability. At the same time, he also set a new goal for himself: Veridia University.
Vera never would have imagined that her words would completely change Shane Caldwell’s original plans. All she could think about right now was grinding problems, grinding problems, and more grinding problems!
When the first class ended, Shirley Forrest walked over to Vera’s desk and gave her a thumbs-up. "Nice one!"
Vera couldn’t help but laugh. Shirley added, "But you should be careful from now on. After all, a lot of people at our school like Nathaniel Nathan."
Vera nodded. "Thanks for the warning. I’ll be careful."
The two girls exchanged a smile.
When school let out that afternoon, Master Nathan was there at the school gate to pick her up himself. Seeing her come out, he said, "Vera, over here!"
Vera obediently walked over. Master Nathan got straight to the point. "Don’t bother going back to the Preston Family. Just come back and live with the Nathan Family. It’ll save you the trouble from those people who won’t give you any peace." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Who was Master Nathan? How could he not understand what had happened today? He’d promised Nathaniel he would take good care of Vera. If he failed to look after her, that little brat of a grandson would definitely forbid Lana Cheney from cooking meat for him when he got back!
