Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Driven to Desperation

He didn’t necessarily have to have Yelena Hughes; besides, several times when he wanted to play, she held back, and Jasper Yale was already getting impatient.

Anne Hughes took medication for several consecutive days, and her spirits were improving so much that she could even go downstairs for a walk.

By the tenth day, the box of medicine was nearly finished.

After coaxing Anne to sleep, Yelena Hughes sneaked out of the door.

She wasn’t sure how to speak at The Summit Gardens, but she’d rather kneel there than wait at home for her sister’s health to deteriorate.

The apartment complex had no elevator, so Yelena Hughes descended the stairs.

A man came up the stairs towards her, brushed past her; she saw he was carrying a bucket, which looked heavy.

She didn’t give it a second thought, but as she reached the first floor, she heard violent knocking from upstairs.

Yelena Hughes suddenly halted, a strong sense of unease swept over her heart.

She ran upstairs frantically, "Anne, don’t... don’t open the door."

But she was a step too late; she heard Anne’s scream, and she dashed up the staircase.

A bucket of dense, pungent blood was splashed onto Anne, and Yelena Hughes nearly crawled to the front door.

The man pointed at Anne, shouting viciously, "This is the blood debt your father left behind; as long as he doesn’t show up, you won’t have a peaceful day."

Yelena Hughes tugged at the man’s arm while Anne’s mouth and nose were filled with the nauseating smell of blood.

"Today is dog blood, who knows what it will be tomorrow!"

Yelena Hughes suddenly froze, and Anne shouted into the house, "Buddy!"

The dog she raised hadn’t been home since the afternoon; she thought it had gone out to play.

Anne screamed Buddy’s name frantically, swallowing a mouthful of blood foam, she pressed her palm against her chest, her fingers gripping tightly.

The man took the opportunity to push Yelena Hughes aside, "This is your retribution."

Yelena Hughes hurriedly entered the house, her arm fell, catching Anne’s collapsing body.

"Sis..."

"Anne, don’t be afraid, your sister’s here."

Anne gasped for air wildly, "It hurts."

"Sis, my heart hurts so much, I don’t want to die..."

She was in such pain that her eyes went dark.

The man had already run away, and after calling an ambulance, Yelena Hughes carried Anne down the stairs.

She was drenched in sweat, the rain outside was heavy, she could only hold her sister tightly while waiting at the door.

But after finally getting to the hospital, the doctor’s words were a bolt from the blue.

"Can’t be saved, no way to operate."

"What do you mean can’t be saved, my sister is unconscious now."

"No, doctor..." Yelena Hughes watched her sister lying there alone, she tried to stop him but the doctor impatiently pushed her away.

Inside the emergency room, people were everywhere waiting to be saved.

But her sister could only lay there waiting to die.

After Mrs. Hughes arrived at the hospital, she appeared humble, powerless, and just knelt beside the hospital bed. "Please, save my daughter..."

People came and went, but no one stopped.

Yelena Hughes held Anne’s hand tightly, the person on the bed was motionless, breathing so weakly it seemed like she was dead.

"Mom, watch over Anne, I’ll try to find a way." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

"What way do you have..."

Yelena Hughes stumbled into the corridor, and the only person she could think of was Justin Sutton.

After the call connected, a man’s voice came with a light sarcasm, "What do you want from me?"

"Justin Sutton, please save my sister, she’s been taken to the hospital, but the doctors refuse to treat her..."

"What? Which hospital, I’ll come right over!"

Yelena Hughes gave the address, waiting for him like a lifeline, but after waiting for a long time, she never saw his figure.

When she called again, the phone was turned off.

Without hesitating, she charged into the pouring rain.

She couldn’t get into The Summit Gardens, a heavy gate blocked her, and two fierce mastiffs were leashed to the grand sculpted jade columns.

Her thin clothes stuck to her skin; people being worse off than dogs probably looked like her.

Behind her came the sound of a car braking, an open black umbrella was like a curtain shrouding overhead, and when a pair of long, straight legs emerged from the car, they quickly moved forward, cutting through the rain carried by the wind.

Jasper Yale paused beside Yelena Hughes, the rain slid along the umbrella ribs and dripped down, the raindrops fell into her collar.

"Young Master!"

The man walked forward a few steps, ascending the long stairs, the previously fierce mastiffs obediently lay down upon seeing him.

Yelena Hughes caught up, grabbing the man’s sleeve. "Help me."

"Help you with what? Oh, the medicine’s finished."

"No, my sister’s had a relapse; she’s lying in the hospital, and no one is willing to treat her."

Jasper Yale stood under the eaves, his carved features were cold, "Isn’t a hospital a place to save lives? Why are they unwilling to treat her?"

Yelena Hughes was so anxious her voice became hoarse, "After my sister was admitted to the hospital, she didn’t even receive the most basic emergency care. I know our family offended someone, someone who suppresses them from treating her, I have no way..."

Yelena Hughes raised her head, the rain striking her face was painful, "Young Master..."

"Saving lives is urgent," Jasper Yale instructed Hailey Jenkins beside him, "Take care of it."

"Yes."

Yelena Hughes was about to step forward when she heard Jasper Yale say: "Do you want to follow?"

"I’m worried about the hospital."

Jasper Yale opened the door, "Miss Hughes came to see me, for nothing else?"

At this moment, Yelena Hughes was in such a pitiful state that she couldn’t stand looking at herself, "Once my sister wakes up, I’ll come over."

Jasper Yale entered the house and stood at the doorway, the falling light divided his silhouette. "Who has such power? To make a hospital turn a blind eye to someone dying."

He clicked his tongue, "Wouldn’t me interfering like this be inviting trouble for myself?"

Yelena Hughes understood the meaning of his words, her anxiety was of no use.

She followed Jasper Yale upstairs, the smell of blood still clung to her, it took a long time to wash it off.

Yelena Hughes wore a loose bathrobe, revealing a pair of slender legs as she walked.

White enough to make one imagine them wrapped around a waist.

"I want to call my mom."

Jasper Yale took two steps forward, his hair still half-dry, "No need to bother."

He turned on the video call, soon Hailey Jenkins’ voice appeared, "Young Master, I’ve arranged everything."

"Miss Hughes is worried; she wants to see for herself."

Yelena Hughes saw Hailey Jenkins turn the camera to Anne, who was being pushed into the emergency room by medical staff.

Jasper Yale tossed the phone onto the bed, immediately wrapping his arm around her shoulder, pulling her into the bed.

"Young Master, I’ll keep a close watch, don’t worry." Hailey Jenkins finished speaking, waiting for Jasper Yale to end the video call.

Instead, he pulled the phone closer, placing it near Yelena Hughes’ head, "Don’t hang up, to put Miss Hughes at ease, keep broadcasting the entire time."

Yelena Hughes was about to speak when he already sealed her mouth, the man’s entangled kiss quickly enveloped her earlobe.

Yelena Hughes reached for the phone, but her hand was grabbed by Jasper Yale.

"Doesn’t this feel exciting?"
