Chapter 158: Chapter 158: I Won’t Be Your Lover!

Is Jasper Yale trying to create trouble?

He doesn’t have the energy to play hide and seek with her.

"Even if you want to end it, you can’t. This kind of relationship, you still have to maintain it."

Yelena Hughes picked up the napkin from the table, spread it out, and placed it on her lap. "Jasper, I actually want to ask you, what exactly is our relationship? Boyfriend and girlfriend? Impossible, I don’t deserve it. Lovers? If we’re lovers, I’ve been one for a while, and I don’t want to continue anymore."

Yelena Hughes’s attitude was not ambiguous at all.

Originally, she and Jasper Yale were entangled tightly, like a tangled mess, and Jasper’s words that day cut through it like a sharp knife. Ending it like this was actually the best way.

Jasper Yale pulled out a cigarette, holding it with two fingers. He didn’t like the way she was acting.

His words carried a completely helpless stance.

"Don’t want to continue?"

"Yes."

Her voice was light and cold, like a cat’s paw, scratching at Jasper’s heart, leaving him both irritated and upset.

"Give me a reason and see if I can let you go."

Why couldn’t Yelena Hughes communicate with him?

"What proper girl likes to be entwined with someone so unclearly? Jasper, in the past, I was helpless. But now I can choose, and I don’t want this kind of life anymore."

Yelena Hughes said it all in one breath, still cautious not to offend Jasper Yale.

"I want to have a normal relationship with someone, and I’m not young anymore..."

Jasper lit the cigarette, taking a deep drag, his eyes obscured by the smoke in the dim light.

She wants a relationship now?

"With whom?"

"Depends on fate."

"Shawn Thorne, or Justin Sutton?" Jasper’s expression became increasingly grim as he mentioned these two names.

"Neither of them suits me." Yelena Hughes lifted her hand, pressing it against the edge of the table in front of her. "I’ll just find an ordinary man, someone who works nine-to-five, treating each other with respect..."

The man opposite her suddenly let out a laugh.

Yelena Hughes found his laughter a bit grating, and Jasper’s voice was harsh between his lips and teeth, "Can you really settle for that?"

"As long as he’s good to me."

"Yelena Hughes," Jasper was somewhat angry, his eyebrows rising while his eyes showed coldness, "Haven’t I been good to you?"

"You said you’d give me whatever I wanted."

House, money, car, it doesn’t matter.

Yelena Hughes knew Jasper was never short of cash.

She clutched the napkin on her lap earnestly. "I want to be with someone who, when he takes me out, can openly introduce me as his girlfriend."

Yelena wasn’t hoping to become Jasper’s girlfriend, she was just using her imagined person as an example.

"Dating and having an ulterior motive for sleeping together are different, Jasper."

Jasper savored the taste of tobacco in his mouth, "But when you needed something from me, you didn’t say that."

She did.

But he also said, that was because she needed something.

Now she doesn’t need anything, she wants her own life, isn’t that normal?

"Jasper, compared to me, you’re definitely more carefree and easygoing. You might just feel unwilling. But you don’t have to be so. You were the one who suggested ending it first."

After all, who dares to dump him first, right?

After finishing a cigarette, Jasper’s chest was filled with various emotions. Yelena seemed impervious to all, her attitude towards him was: not proactive, not responsible.

And he? He was used to being in control of everything, especially of women.

He raised his hand, pressing the cigarette butt firmly into the ashtray, "Then let me ask you, what would it take for us to continue?"

"Unless you cut ties with Miss Alden, she’s not in a relationship with you, she’s not your woman."

Yelena Hughes said it deliberately. She didn’t want Jasper to do it; she wanted him to feel she was overestimating herself.

Didn’t he also suspect it before? Said she was deluded, so let him completely hate her.

Jasper placed his hand on the table as the waiter quickly came in to serve the dishes.

Yelena Hughes began to eat with her chopsticks without any courtesy towards Jasper.

Hughes Family.

Lindsay Walsh was out delivering food late at night, the house’s lights were off, and a figure quietly approached the door.

The man pulled out a door card, swiped it in the door gap a few times, and easily opened the door.

When he entered, he barely made a sound.

A flashlight beam shone into the room, and soon, the man began rummaging through everything.

He ransacked Lindsay Walsh’s room but found nothing. The man quickly moved into Yelena Hughes’s room, and after a few moves, heard a rustling sound.

"Sis, are you back?"

Anne Hughes had stayed awake for a while but fell asleep unexpectedly, only to see a figure crouching by the window. Upon a closer look, it was a stranger.

"Who are you?"

The man feared she would scream, lunged forward to cover Anne’s mouth, but she jumped out of bed, "Help—"

Her neck was struck with a hand chop, and she slumped onto the bed, motionless.

The man worried that the scream might draw trouble, considering how poorly soundproofed the old apartment block was. He glanced around the surroundings, and decided against leaving any loose ends.

He went to the curtains, using a lighter to set them on fire.

Yelena Hughes barely ate before feeling full, her appetite had been poor lately. "Take your time, Jasper, I need to head back."

"In such a hurry?"

"My sister is home alone, and I don’t feel at ease."

Anne’s originally introverted nature, compounded by the trauma of Mr. Hughes’s death, had made her health worsen.

Jasper stood up as well and took her back.

As the car drove into the neighborhood, it was blocked, and Yelena Hughes heard the sound of sirens. A crowd had gathered at the base of her building.

As the car stopped, Yelena Hughes rushed out the door.

"Yelena!" In the crowd, a neighbor aunt spotted her immediately, "Quick, your house is on fire."

Hearing this, Yelena Hughes tried to rush upstairs anxiously, but the aunt managed to hold her back, "It shouldn’t be serious. The fire just started when we saw it, and we called the fire department immediately."

"Tha...thank you." Yelena Hughes was anxious, "Did you see my sister, Anne?"

Footsteps came from the stairwell, and when Yelena looked over, she saw a firefighter carrying Anne Hughes down the stairs.

She quickly stepped forward to look, "Anne!"

Anne’s eyes were tightly closed, showing no response, and Yelena called her several times.

She followed Anne into the ambulance, and on this night, she went to the hospital twice. Once again, she found herself sitting outside the emergency room.

The police spoke to her on the side, "Have you offended anyone? Your home shows clear signs of being ransacked."

The drawers in Lindsay Walsh’s room had been pried open, but a gold necklace in a conspicuous spot hadn’t been taken, showing that the intruder wasn’t after money.

After answering some questions, the police left.

She saw a pair of legs gradually come into her view, and Jasper stood before her, saying, "Even now, are you still going to say you can live without me?"
