Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Vegetative Patient Wakes Up

Yelena Hughes never expected someone would dare to touch Jasper Yale’s phone.

"I have something to discuss with him."

"Oh, who might you be?"

She paused for a moment, then said, "My name is Yelena Hughes."

On the other end of the line, there were a few voices; it seemed Jasper Yale had arrived.

The woman’s voice was very delicate, "She says she’s looking for you, perhaps it’s something urgent."

Jasper Yale took the phone, glanced at the caller ID, he hadn’t saved Yelena Hughes’ number, so it just showed a string of digits on the screen.

"Wrong number."

"No, she said she’s looking for you."

Yelena Hughes heard Jasper’s very distant tone, "Ignore it, it’s just someone looking for drugs."

With that, the call was hung up.

Drug-seeking, quite an apt description.

She glanced at Dean Holloway who was munching on breakfast beside her, "Are all men like this? All excited before they get you, but once they have you, they think it’s nothing special?"

Dean Holloway was too busy stuffing a pancake into his mouth to speak.

"Usually, those guys are jerks. And not just any jerks, but top-tier ones." He looked at Yelena Hughes and swallowed the pancake with effort, "Another possibility is, the woman simply isn’t appealing, and the guy feels it’s a waste of energy on her."

"..."

Yelena Hughes silently agreed, Jasper Yale was indeed a jerk.

Soon enough, she received a message, from Jasper Yale.

"Come to The Summit Gardens tonight."

Thank goodness, he remembered he had to give her the drugs.

Yelena Hughes went there after work, the bodyguards recognized her, as she had spent the night there before, so they let her through.

But she was quickly blocked at the door by two Tibetan Mastiffs, their barking getting louder and louder, she couldn’t take another step forward.

The door clicked open, and a wheelchair was pushed out from inside. "Yahoo, Prince, how can you bark at guests like that?"

The Tibetan Mastiffs obeyed and laid down, very well-behaved.

Yelena Hughes was startled to see this familiar looking woman, and upon closer look, she was taken aback.

It was Nancy Alden!

She had woken up?

Nancy Alden was also sizing up Yelena Hughes, such a fair and clean face, what woman wouldn’t envy such dewy skin?

Looking further down, Nancy Alden’s face darkened a little.

Yelena Hughes had quite the assets, a large bust, a slim waist, and those long legs were straight.

"Who are you looking for?" Nancy Alden asked with a slight smile.

Yelena Hughes realized she should’ve called Jasper before coming in. She stepped back, intending to leave.

Nancy Alden didn’t give her the chance, calling softly into the house, "Jasper."

Footsteps came from inside, "Why are you wandering around alone?"

The tone was the man’s usual indifference, but upon close listening, there was no reproach, only concern.

Nancy Alden’s gaze was still on Yelena Hughes, "A lady is here looking for you."

Jasper Yale stepped out without really looking at Yelena Hughes and was about to push Nancy Alden back inside. "It’s cold outside."

"I’m not cold, maybe she has something urgent for you."

Nancy Alden held Jasper’s fingers, while with the other hand gestured Yelena Hughes closer, "Don’t just stand there, come and say what you need."

Yelena Hughes had just stepped forward when the once still Tibetan Mastiff suddenly lunged forward, if not for the chain, she would’ve been bitten.

Yelena Hughes instinctively stepped back several steps, Nancy Alden observed and touched her own leg.

"Jasper, do you think I can still stand up?"

"You can."

Nancy Alden seemed downcast, "Don’t comfort me."

"It’s just that you’ve been lying on the bed for too long, causing some muscle atrophy." Jasper saw the blanket covering her legs was slipping, so he adjusted it for her.

"Hailey, take Nancy inside first."

Hailey Jenkins came out from inside, "Miss Alden, I’ll take you to rest."

"Alright." Nancy Alden looked at Yelena Hughes standing there. "Why not invite her in, don’t let her stand in the cold."

"No need." Jasper declined decisively.

Hailey pushed the wheelchair inside and shut the door, Jasper stood on the steps, already having the height advantage, looking down even more at her now.

"What are you here for?"

"You messaged me to come over."

Jasper’s lips curled into a faint, somewhat mocking smile, "If you’re out of meds, just say so, no need for lame excuses to come over."

Yelena Hughes took out her phone, intending to show the message.

But it really was unnecessary now.

Nancy Alden was awake and Jasper had brought her home. If he wanted to see Yelena Hughes, he wouldn’t have asked her here.

And who else could access Jasper’s phone besides Miss Alden?

"I am indeed out of meds."

Jasper stepped down a step, standing very close to Yelena Hughes, his words seemed to drop directly on her head. "Don’t come here again, you’ll only make her overthink."

His darling had awakened, other women had to step aside.

Nancy Alden was sitting by the window in the wheelchair, looking out, "Hailey, what’s their relationship?"

Hailey Jenkins appeared nonchalant, "No relation. Miss Hughes’s sister fell seriously ill, she came to beg the young master for some new drugs."

"Then how does she know Jasper?"

Hailey spun a tale with open eyes, "Maybe she asked around."

Nancy Alden felt uncomfortable, whenever she thought of Yelena Hughes’ face, it was like watching a thorn pierce her own flesh.

"Why doesn’t Jasper just throw her out?"

"I’ll go tell the young master."

Nancy Alden did not stop him, Hailey went outside and heard Yelena Hughes speaking softly, "If the young master tells me not to come, I’ll comply, but before Heart Protection Peace is on the market, you must give me the medicine. This was your promise."

Each word firmly spoken, resolute.

Jasper didn’t argue further, instructing Hailey, "Give her a few boxes of the medicine."

"Yes."

Yelena Hughes watched him go back inside, Hailey looked a bit awkward, "Miss Hughes, would you mind waiting outside for me?"

"Alright."

She only needed the medicine, as Nancy Alden had just woken up, with plenty of private time with Jasper to enjoy, her staying wasn’t appropriate.

Jasper walked over to Nancy Alden, holding her hand, "Are you cold?"

"Do men all like women like her?"

"Like what?"

Nancy Alden wanted to say, "Obviously flirty." "With a great body, even I as a woman am envious."

"Oh really?" Jasper remained unfazed, "I don’t think so, just average."

"Guess her bra size?"

Jasper bent down, one hand on Nancy’s leg, "Did lying in bed for a year screw with your brain? Why would I be staring at her chest?"

Nancy leaned back, feeling pain and frustration, "Because it’s attractive."

"Don’t let your mind wander."

Nancy couldn’t suppress the question in her heart, "Jasper, did you two sleep together?"
