Chapter 40: 40: Why You Have It

Although Simon’s knowledge about demons was little, he could connect the dots and make guesses about what the pillars were meant to be used for.

There were crimson engravings on the seven pillars, and he recognized these engravings the moment he saw them.

’Chaos Runes.’

Simon could not understand or decipher these runes, but he knew that they all had a single goal.

Extracting the blood essence from him.

Although he was worried, he was not truly afraid.

He calmly observed the pillars and the chaos runes, much to the annoyance of the Grave Lord.

"Don’t waste anymore of my precious time. Stand beside the central pillar." The Grave Lord gestured at the central pillar which was vastly different from the others.

Simon glanced at the pillar, then he shifted his gaze to the Grave Lord who was standing beside an altar that was not too far away from the central pillar.

He had missed the altar because the pillars caught more of his attention.

He observed the altar for a few seconds before he began approaching the central pillar.

He could feel the annoyance and impatience the Grave Lord had, and Simon had a feeling that he’d be making things worse for himself if he tested the Demon Lord’s patience.

He stopped when the distance between him and the central pillar was less than twenty meters.

He looked at the Grave Lord.

"What will this do to me?"

The Grave Lord was about to turn and make some last minute changes to the altar beside him, but when Simon spoke, he froze and his eyes flashed with annoyance.

He turned and calmly looked at the Grave Lord who was staring at him with a cold gaze.

Simon’s expression was utterly calm. Fearless made him feel no fear, and it was cases like this where one truly appreciated a skill like Fearless.

If he didn’t have Fearless, he was 99% certain he’d be sweating buckets of trembling subconsciously because of the gap between him and the Grave Lord.

Meanwhile, the Grave Lord remained silent and didn’t say anything. He merely looked at Simon with the same cold gaze, and when Simon realized that the demon did not plan on answering his questions, he spoke again.

"How are you so certain I have the Devourer’s bloodline in me? You haven’t even tested the quality of my bloodline to know if I have it."

The Grave Lord remained silent, and Simon stared at him calmly. However, the worry in his heart was growing.

He wanted to avoid being chained to the central pillar by all means. His instincts were seriously warning him about it, and Simon was extremely wary of it.

He did not know why, but his instincts wanted to avoid the central pillar by all means.

Even if it meant making the Velaris to be more suspicious and confused about why he doesn’t have the Devourer’s bloodline after everything that said otherwise.

He was about to speak, but the Grave Lord suddenly spoke.

"There’s no need to test your bloodline. I not only heard the conversation between you and Zaglur, I also saw you absorb all the fluid in a corpse, and your strength and speed experienced a massive boost afterwards."

"If I still need to test your bloodline after all these irrefutable proof, then I’d be a fool."

"But what if I don’t have-"

"Enough." The Grave Lord cut Simon off with a cold voice, but Simon still wanted to speak.

However, the Grave Lord was having none of it.

He waved his hand, and Simon’s shadow flew toward the central black pillar at an extremely fast speed.

Before Simon could react, he felt himself being dragged by his shadow, and then...

BANG!

He crashed into the pillar with his spine nearly cracking in several places, and blood nearly spilling out of his mouth.

"Garghh."

A groan escaped his bloodied lips, and in the next second, the black chains around the pillar coiled and tightened around his body like snakes.

"Arrggh!"

Simon screamed as his body was pressed tightly into the pillar. His arms were spread apart and they were forced to go behind the pillar, causing Simon’s shoulders to feel like it was about to pop out of its sockets

He was about to scream again, but a chain coiled and tightened around his neck, preventing him from screaming.

Sweat could be seen on his face along with a million thoughts he was currently having.

He looked at the Grave Lord while desperately trying to shake his head. The Grave Lord also stared into his eyes with an indifferent expression.

"Another reason why I believe that you have the Devourer’s bloodline in you is because ever since I saw you, you have never for once shown no sign of true fear."

"It might have come for a second, but you always regained your calm very quickly."

"You were not truly fearful when you suddenly saw me in front of the spatial crack. In fact, Zaglur was even more fearful compared to you."

"Even now, you’re calm. You’re in pain, but you’re calm. I can see it in your eyes. You are not truly afraid, and the only reason why a backwater demon like you would have this trait is because of the Devourer’s bloodline."

"I don’t know much about it, but what I do know is that you’re not worthy to possess such a bloodline. You’re but a speck of dust before the might of that bloodline, and we’ll do anything to get it back... Even if it means killing you before your coming of age."

The Grave Lord suddenly placed his hand on the altar, and a needle suddenly pierced through his palm, causing blood to drip from the hole in his palm.

However, the altar suddenly lit up with a crimson light after it was fed the blood of the Grave Lord.

The crimson lights spread across the entire room, causing the six pillar to emit a crimson light.

The crimson lights suddenly spread toward the black pillar, and then the black pillar released a hum along with a dark light.

In the next moment, Simon screamed in immense pain as thirty black needles pierced into his spinal cord at once.
