Chapter 97: Are his days with Maya numbered?

"The gun missed your heart by an inch. You are very lucky, Dalton. You could have died. I know you think you’re all mighty and powerful, but you have no superpowers. You can bleed and die."

Dalton shifted in the bed, growing weary of Oliver’s whining. "Stop your bitchy moaning, Oliver. I want to sleep."

"It’s getting too dangerous, Dalton. You might not survive the next bullet."

Dalton looked into his younger brother’s eyes, which were filled with sadness and fear, and he felt a guilty ache inside.

"I promise I won’t let a bullet touch me. If it does, I have you to take it out," Dalton said, his lips curving

Oliver chuckled. "When we were kids. You and Aiden are always getting hurt because of your fights with older boys, I wanted to become a doctor for you guys to help fix you up when you were wounded. But I wouldn’t always be around, Dalton. An example is this. I wasn’t the one who operated on you. Do you know that I nearly cried when I came back from the surgical room and found out you were in another surgical room? I thought I was going to lose you." He looked away, but Dalton didn’t miss the tears welling up in his eyes.

"You could have died, Dalton, and I wasn’t there to save you."

Dalton straightened up, trying to hug his little brother to comfort him like he did when they were kids, but the movement brought him tremendous pain, aggravating him. When is he going to get out of this hospital bed?

"How long do I have to be bedridden? I hate staying in bed."

Oliver burst out laughing. "Bro, you look like a big baby whining like that. You’ll be fine in a month or two."

"Damn, that’s too long." Dalton groans, shifting to a calm, reassuring tone. "I’m not going to die; I won’t let Vico kill me." Or take Maya away from him. He wanted to add, but he hasn’t told anyone about it not even Aiden.

Oliver knows about Vico’s return. They keep Oliver in the dark about everything except for matters related to Vico because Oliver and his twin were affected; their two older siblings were kidnapped for over three months, which traumatized them.

Vico needs to pay for ruining their childhood. He is already devising a plan, and he will carry it out as soon as his gunshot wound heals.

"Be careful, Dalton. Be careful."

"You have nothing to worry about. I let my guard down, which is why Vico got to me, but from now on, I will be more careful," Dalton assures his younger brother.

"Your lunch is here," a nurse entered with a bed tray. Dalton took one glance at the food and looked away. The meal looked depressing. It had been three days since he woke up stuck in this hospital bed, and he had been eating the blandest food ever. He was either used to Maya’s delicious meals, or the hospital food was just bad.

"You can take your leave, Betty. I will make sure he eats and takes his medication," Oliver said, offering the nurse a smile.

The nurse smiled back. "Alright, Doctor Oliver," she replied and took her leave.

"Now stop being a baby and eat your food. You need to take your meds."

Dalton grunted with annoyance. There are too many pills.

When the door opened, Dalton took a glance, and his heart soared. "Maya," he sighed contentedly. Maya smiled cheerfully. "I brought you some food," she said, shaking the insulated food bag she was holding.

Oliver plastered his hand on his face and sighed. "Are you really going to bring him food? Seriously? There’s nothing wrong with the hospital food. Since he’s a VIP patient, we have a top-class chef preparing his meals. He’s just acting like a spoiled brat."

Maya giggled, "Let me taste and verify that." She picked up the fork and dug into the chicken salad that the nurse had served Dalton. Her face scrunched up slightly. "Not bad, but Dalton deserves a better meal than this." She took the plate of chicken salad and handed it over to Oliver. "Now this is much better," she replaced it with turkey spinach wrap, placing it on the bed tray in front of Dalton. "Oh, I brought you quinoa salad as well," she dug into the insulated food bag and pulled it out. "It’s quinoa mixed with diced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, chickpeas, and a lemon-olive oil dressing. I added feta cheese for extra flavor."

"Thanks," Dalton kissed Maya on the lips.

Oliver rolled his eyes. "I’m leaving. I’ll be back for your medication." He left with the chicken salad.

Dalton took in Maya’s face "I miss you."

Maya rolled her eyes. "You saw me yesterday."

"For just two hours and you went back to work. "

"Aww." Maya stroked his cheek. "You’re acting like a sulking little boy. That’s cute."

Dalton basked in her touch, rubbing his cheek against her palm.

"Now eat your food," Maya nudged him. Dalton obeyed, taking a bite of the turkey spinach wrap. It was a good thing the bullet hit his left side, limiting his left arm movement instead of his right.

Dalton’s green eyes were fixated on Maya’s pretty face. His mind wandered to the diamond ring hidden in the inner pocket of one of his suits. Has he been a good enough boyfriend for Maya to consider him a potential husband? When can he finally propose? Would that be too soon?

When he got Maya to live with him, he was on a mission to prove to her that he could be the perfect man she could spend the rest of her life with. Then his infuriating mother showed up, followed by Charlotte, with her obsession with him, ruining his plans.

Next, Vico appeared, bringing along a new obstacle: he wants to take Maya away from him.

No matter how confident he feels, he is experiencing a sense of trepidation about the possibility of losing Maya
