The billionaire's only desire-Chapter 94: who is the accomplice?
Chapter 94: who is the accomplice?
"Let’s go to Oliver’s office."
"Your mother is right. Have you gone insane?" Maya fussed the moment Aiden shut Oliver’s office door.
"Dalton will say these exact words to you when he wakes up."
Maya’s cheeks colored "I don’t know."
Aiden chuckled. "Wanna bet? My brother is crazy about you."
"No doubt about it," River agreed with Aiden.
Marcello chips in, speaking in Italian. "Sono più pazzo di te di lui"
Maya had a tiny, uneasy feeling that she wouldn’t like what Marcello said if she translated it into English.
Maya sighed, "Look at what this has resulted in," she muttered.
Dalton’s being crazy about her was meant to be flattering, but it actually made Maya feel terrible. She feels like a tool being used to annihilate Dalton. He is a powerful man, but she is his weakness.
"The only thing I knew from Steve, the head of security, before entering this hospital was that Dalton had been accidentally shot by you. How did you end up with a gun?" Aiden’s tone was gentle and non-interrogative, making it easy for Maya to respond without fear.
"It all started with a phone call..." Maya relayed everything that happened without a single tear; she was surprisingly at ease. Perhaps it was because there were no judgmental expressions on their faces as she recounted what had happened.
Maya concluded by scorning herself. "I’m such a fool for falling for it. My friends were never in danger; the video was probably fake, and that’s so embarrassing."
Aiden shook his head. "Don’t do that to yourself. Everyone could have fallen for that, including me. The fear of losing your loved ones can cloud your logical reasoning."
"Steve believes the security system was jammed a month ago, specifically on the day we attended the gala party. Therefore, the gun and spy earbud were planted in your drawers during that time frame."
"Do you think the man put them there himself?"
Aiden looked skeptical. "Even though he tampered with the security system, he can’t just walk into the mansion and go straight to your room without any of the maids spotting him. So I think he used someone who no one would bat an eye if that person entered your room."
Maya was struck by a memory. "I found my half-sister in my room, I think it was her." She had no doubt about it.
"Your half-sister is working with Vi..." Aiden paused, reconsidering his words. "It makes sense if she was the accomplice. She has plenty of reasons to loathe you. When exactly did you find her in your room?"
Maya furrowed her brow. "I think it was a few days before the gala party."
"Well, that means your half-sister is not the accomplice. The security system was jammed on the day of the gala party."
"Oh," Maya said, sounding disappointed. "You’re right."
"Maya heaves a sigh. "If she is not the accomplice, who do you think gained access to my room and planted the earbud and gun? I have been away from the mansion since the gala party until today."
"We will figure out who the accomplice is later." "Where is your phone?" Aiden inquired. "I want to verify whether the video sent to you was fake or real." Maya scratched her head. "Uh... I left it in the bathroom." Being reminded of her failed plan made her chest ache.
Aiden pulled out his phone. "I’m calling one of the maids to bring your phone to the hospital. "
."I need to get back to the waiting room; I am not comfortable with leaving Haven all by herself with your mother. "
"Okay, Marcello, River, and I have a lot to talk about. We will stay here for a while."
"Alright," Maya said as she dashed out the door.

Haven was the only one in the waiting room when Maya walked in. "Where did those two go?" Maya asked, nodding toward where Beatrice and Charlotte had been sitting.
Haven grumbled, "Beatrice grew tired of playing the worried mom and left as soon as you all left."
"That’s Beatrice for you, the deadbeat mother."
"What about Charlotte?"
Haven’s eyes flickered with intrigue. "She also left not long ago. But I eavesdropped on a conversation she was having on the phone." Haven pulled out her headphones from her bag. "I had my headphones on, so she thought I wasn’t listening."
Maya’s interest was piqued. "What was the conversation about?"
"Let me relay the exact words she said." Haven cleared her throat.
"You told me it was fake. You deceived me. I’m not working for you anymore," Haven imitated Charlotte’s voice.
.Maya frowned, trying to make sense of Charlotte’s words.
"That’s all?"
"Yeah, unfortunately, she left to continue the phone call somewhere else."
Maya deduced in her mind that Charlotte was probably talking to Vico.
She needs to tell Dalton that Charlotte is working for Vico as soon as he regains consciousness. If only he would survive the surgery.
Maya became anxious again. She couldn’t sit down as she paced around, her anxiety reaching its peak.
Seconds turned into minutes, then into an hour, and then two. Still, there was no news about Dalton’s condition.
"Maya, I’m so sorry, girl," Laura said as she entered, her face looking devastated.
"Look at your eyes, they’re so red! The tears you have been shedding could fill a bucket," Laura joked lightly.
Maya rubbed her eyes, jesting. "Too small, maybe a barrel."
"So how did it happen?"
"Sit down; it’s a long story," Maya nudged Laura.
Maya took a deep breath as she recounted how Dalton was shot for the third time. She cried this time.
When she finished, Laura said, "This is so awful of me to say, but I feel so honored that I’m so important to you that you couldn’t choose Dalton’s life over mine."
"Me too," Haven said
"Come here, guys." Maya gathered them into a group hug. "I love you all so much! You are my sisters."
"Aww, we love you too, sis," Laura and Haven said in unison.
They all had to wipe away a few tears from their eyes when they broke off the hug.
"But I will never forgive you if you had succeeded in killing yourself," Laura fumed.
"Yeah, me too," Haven glared at Maya. "What were you thinking, girl?"
Maya groaned. "I had no option. I would rather die than lose Dalton or you guys." Maya’s voice was filled with emotion.
Laura fanned her face and said, "Girl, stop! You’re going to make us cry a river of tears."
Maya laughed. "Don’t—" she trailed off, interrupted by the appearance of River, Aiden, and Marcello. Their faces were filled with some sort of relief.
"We just spoke to the director of the hospital," River said.
Maya clutched her chest. "What did he say?"
River’s face broke into a smile. "Dalton is out of surgery, and his condition is stable now."
Maya’s heart leaped with joy in her ribcage. "He is going to live!"
