Chapter 93: Dalton’s brother’s bizzare reaction

The slap was so lethal that her cheek hurt so much that she wanted to cry, but she muffled it.

Maya squeezed her eyes closed, embracing herself for the second slap, which she very much deserved, but the slap never came.

She slowly opened her eyes to see Aiden, defiantly clutching his mother’s wrist. "Hit her again, and you will feel my wrath," he scowled at her.

"You are defending her?" Beatrice’s eyes glistened with betrayal. "Your brother is fighting for his life because of her! And you’re preventing me from hitting her to avenge your brother?"

Aiden roughly unclamped his hand from his mother’s wrist, causing her to stumble into Charlotte. "Dalton wouldn’t hesitate to kill you to protect her; remember that, Mother."

"Now either you sit your ass down and leave Maya alone, or you leave," Aiden hissed. His eyes fiercely scanned Charlotte. "This goes for you too."

They obediently obliged, taking their seats, but didn’t stop glaring at Maya. freewёbnoνel.com

Maya’s mouth gaped; Aiden should be threatening to make her pay for shooting Dalton, not coming to her defense.

"Maya. " Haven shook her. "Ouch, the slap must sting like hell."

’I’m sorry. I didn’t see that slap coming; I could have prevented it. At least Aiden beat me to it and stopped the second slap," Marcello laments.

Maya groaned, glaring back at Beatrice. "It stings like hell. Is your hand made of steel or something?" Maya rumbled beneath her tone.

"Your cheek looks red," Aiden pointed out with concern. "I’ll go get you some ice." He darted off.

Maya was dumbfounded. What has gotten into Dalton’s brothers? Their reaction to her putting their big brother on the surgical table is bizarre.

"You shot Dalton?" Haven asked in a whisper.

"It’s a long story." Maya sighs and glances at Marcello, who is also curious about it.

"You can tell me about that later," Haven retreated.

"Sure," Maya said, tilting her head down to avoid the glares that Beatrice and Charlotte were directing at her.

"Sorry to keep you waiting. " River is finally back.

Maya sat up straight. "What took you so long?" She snatched the plastic cup with a lid from River’s grasp.

"I met one of Oliver’s friends on my way to the cafeteria, and he engaged me in a lengthy discussion about Dalton’s condition. By the time I realized I was speaking to another doctor, then another. I had totally forgotten about your tea. Please forgive me, sister-in-law." River clasped his hands together.

A smile slipped into Maya’s face. "You’re quite popular here."

"You can say that. I’m the twin brother of a genius doctor," River said with a casual shrug.

Maya scoffed. "I bet all the doctors you were talking to were women."

"Busted!" River laughed. "It’s not my fault I’m a ladies’ man."

Maya gagged. "Jeez, your womanizing is disgusting."

Bantering with River was helping her a lot by taking her mind off things.

Maya guzzled down the iced tea, and she immediately felt the jitters running through her veins subside.

"Bro, you are here?" River flit at Marcello.

"I rushed over as soon as I read your message."

"Thanks for coming, amigo," River said, giving Marcello a manly hug and slapping him on the back.

"Where is Natalia? You were supposed to come with her," Maya asked Marcello.

"She couldn’t come with me; she has a family emergency," Marcello replied.

"Family emergency?" Maya was uncertain. Natalia had cut ties with her family years ago and had never mentioned them. Perhaps she had reconciled with them?

Maya’s mind raced as she recalled Natalia’s screams when she was supposedly shot in the leg.

’Supposedly’ She didn’t actually see that happen.

Or was her screams an hallucination? But her screams were real. It can’t be some kind of hoax. The video felt real too, not fake. Or was it? This train of thought made her head throb.

She can’t make sense of what happened; she might go insane if she tries to gain clarity.

Aiden returned shortly with an ice pack. He handed it over to Maya.

"Thanks," Maya awkwardly snatched it from his hand, avoiding his gaze.

Maya pressed the ice pack against her aching cheek.

"Aiden, how did you get here so fast?" River asked incredulously. "Shouldn’t you be in Toronto for a car exhibition?"

"The head of security, Steve, called to inform me that there was a breach, so I canceled. I was on my way back from the private airport when I received your text."

"The security system was jammed?" Marcello asked, looking clueless.

"Yes, it was too late when Steve detected the breach. The hacker disrupted the radio signals between the security system components, preventing the alarms from triggering and the cameras from transmitting images."

"Che cazzo!" Marcello’s face was a mixture of shock and confusion. "Man, I feel bad. I recommended this security system." His shoulders slumped in indignation.

"Don’t beat yourself up, man. The hacker was incredibly skilled—better than I am." Aiden’s jaw tenses as he speaks, bitterness and anger dwelling in his eyes.

Aiden gaze shifted to Maya. "Can I speak to you..." he paused, his eyes darting between Beatrice and Charlotte. "In private," he added. Maya’s stomach did a somersault.

"You two can come," he shot at River and Marcello.

"Will you be okay on your own?" Maya whispered to Haven.

Haven glanced at the infuriating Charlotte and Beatrice and snorted. "They don’t scare me. I’m good."

"Okay, I will be right back," Maya hoisted herself to her feet.

"No! I can’t take this anymore! Have you two gone insane?" Beatrice suddenly outburst, letting out her pent-up frustrations. "She shot your brother, and you’re giving her the princess treatment instead of sending her six feet under or getting her arrested for murder!"

Maya’s chin trembled as she dropped the ice pack. She doubted Aiden knew she was the one who shot Dalton; he now knows. Her heart raced as her mind devised disturbing scenarios of how Aiden could kill her.

Aiden glared at his mother with murderous intent. "It was an accident, and even if she had intended to kill Dalton, he would forgive her, and so would I."

"I will too," River chimed in, declaring vehemently.

Maya’s eyes bulged. Maybe Beatrice is right; her sons have gone insane.
