Chapter 71: new leads

Dalton stood with his arms folded across his chest, his eyes gleaming at Maya as she taught his brothers how to present and garnish the dish they had just made. Watching Maya cook was like watching an artist create a masterpiece. She cooks with so much passion and creativity. Dalton wished he could watch her cook every day, just to catch a glimpse of the serene expression on her face while she cooked.

River fawn over the five bowls of Moroccan-style chickpea, carrot, and spinach soup.

"Wow, this looks not only delicious but also visually stunning!"

Maya grinned. "You guys did great for your first session." She gave each of them a high five. "Well done, boys!"

They decided to eat at the kitchen island instead of the dining hall. Maya excused herself as soon as she scooped the last spoon to go do FaceTime with her friends.

"Have you guys seen Maya’s cooking video that she posted on TikTok?" River asked when Maya was out of earshot.

"I have watched it. It’s on YouTube, and there’s a sneak peek of it on her Instagram," Oliver cedes. "She was amazing. Her cooking video is getting a lot of views in such a short time. She will become a famous celebrity chef in no time."

"She looks so beautiful in the video, bro. I bet every man who watched the cooking video wasn’t interested in the food she was making; their attention was fixed on her pretty face," River says, earning a deadly glare from Dalton.

Dalton’s fist is clenched, ready to punch his brother, but Oliver steps in, grabbing Dalton’s hand to stop him from hitting his twin. ƒreewebɳovel.com

"Dumbass," Aiden smacked River on the head. "You were literally lusting over Maya right in front of her boyfriend. Can’t you go a day without acting like a horn dog?"

River rubbed his head and groaned. "I was just admiring my sister-in-law’s beauty."

River suddenly chuckled. "It’s quite amusing that Aiden is acting like a saint now when he used to go on a spree, having sex with any girl he found fuckable."

Aiden recoiled in shame. "I was off my antipsychotic medication. Sex was helping a bit with my insanity, but I haven’t slept with anyone in months, not since I harassed Maya at the gentlemen’s club."

Silence enveloped the brothers.

"I was using being of my antipsychotic medication as an excuse, but that does not excuse my terrible actions. I realized that I was becoming one of the sexual predators I despised and had been killing. So, I took a step back and learned how to treat women with respect. Additionally, I had to take my antipsychotic medication seriously to keep my demons at bay."

"Have you apologized to Maya?" Dalton asked. He was taken aback by how remorseful Aiden sounded, as he had never been apologetic for any wrongs he had committed.

"Yes, and she has forgiven me," Aiden replied.

Dalton nodded at him. "Then that’s all that matters."

Oliver was right; Maya is good for Aiden. Aiden seems more grounded ever since she came into their lives.

"Wow," River exclaimed, bursting into applause. "Aiden is going through a redemption arc. It’s wonderful to see."

"Maybe you should too," Oliver huffed.

"Impossible! I can’t stop loving women,"

Oliver did what he had prevented Dalton from doing. He punched his twin brother. "You need a lobotomy."

"How is the investigation into Maya’s mother’s past going?" Dalton asked Aiden as soon as he reared himself into the study with a bowl of ice cream.

"I found some leads," Aiden replied, settling into one of the chairs behind the desk.

"I want to know every detail" Dalton demands.

"Alright," Aiden pushed the ice cream aside and cleared his throat. "I found out that Maya’s mother didn’t die due to complications from childbirth, as everyone was led to believe. It was incredibly difficult to uncover this information."

"Why was it difficult?"

"Because the doctor and the three nurses who attended to Maya’s mother all resigned and died mysteriously, months and a year apart, except for one nurse who managed to escape death. I found her somewhere in Brazil. "

"I see. You are a really good tracker," Dalton said, impressed. "So what did the nurse tell you happened to Maya’s mother? How did she die?" he asked impatiently.

"That’s where the big questions arise. The nurse mentioned that Maya’s mother was fine and healthy after her delivery, and they were ready to allow a friend to come see her. That friend must be Aunt Lily. " Aiden paused to eat two spoonfuls of ice cream because he couldn’t resist it; Maya makes the most delicious ice cream.

Aiden continued, "Three nurses were with Maya’s mother when suddenly the doctor entered and injected a drug into her IV, causing her to lose consciousness. The doctor then pronounced her dead. Her body was taken to the morgue immediately. The nurses were threatened by the doctor to remain silent about the entire incident, or they would lose their lives. They were asked to resign and were paid a large sum of money for their silence. However, months after, they all ended up dead, including the doctor. The only exception was the nurse I spoke to."

"Is there anything else?" Dalton asked.

"Well, Aunt Lily said that the doctor told her Maya’s mother’s last request before she died was that she didn’t want her friend or anyone else to see her dead body. She wanted to be cremated right away."

Dalton shifted in his seat. He felt a niche. "That was odd. Nobody saw her dead body."

Aiden squinted at him. "Are you thinking what I’m thinking?"

"Maya’s mother may be alive," they both said simultaneously.

"And the mastermind behind all this is Maya’s biological father," Dalton concluded.

"I think so too," Aiden affirmed. "I also questioned the nanny of Maya’s siblings. She was fired after Maya’s mother passed away. The nanny mentioned that Maya’s mother had an argument with Frederick Hathaway about a dangerous Italian man he had become involved with. A month later, she became pregnant with Maya."

Dalton’s eyes glowered as he cracked his fingers together. "Maya’s biological father is a dangerous man. We need to find him." They needed to find him and kill him before he could take Maya away from him.
