Chapter 62: Upset

"Stop joking around, Aiden. Charlotte doesn’t have a crush on Dalton. That’s a weird thing to say. She is your cousin. " Maya smacked Aiden’s arm and laughed nervously. "He’s just trolling," she tried to convince herself.

"I’m not joking. Stop calling her my cousin; we are not related to her. She is the girl Dalton’s late uncle brought from God knows where."

Maya shakes her head, unwilling to believe it, despite the aching feeling of jealousy beating in her heart.

"You’re just being paranoid. Charlotte treats him like a cousin," Maya defends her.

Aiden snorts. "Just wait and see."

"You are talking nonsense. End of conversation. I want to watch my movie in peace." Maya climbed back into the bed and tried to ignore Aiden’s presence, focusing her attention on the movie. However, the feeling of Aiden being right about Charlotte was unnerving her.

Aiden left Maya’s room when the movie ended, but his words lingered in her mind.

Maya stayed awake, hoping to speak to Dalton before going to sleep, but when the clock struck 1 a.m., she slept off

In the morning, Maya woke up feeling very upset. However, she pushed her feelings aside and started her day. As part of her routine as usual, she cooked breakfast for the brothers and then made coffee and a smoothie for Dalton.

Maya strode to Dalton’s door and turned the doorknob, opening it to find Charlotte and Dalton drinking coffee together.

Maya froze, blinking at the cup of coffee in Dalton’s hand and then at Charlotte.

Charlotte smiled at her, but it looked forced. "Oh, you brought him coffee too. Sorry, I beat you to it."

Maya gripped the serving tray tightly, a bitter lump forming in her throat. "Well then, Dalton, you can drink the smoothie when you’re done with the coffee."

"Oh, sorry about that too. I brought him a smoothie as well," Charlotte said, her smile growing wider.

Maya’s eyes fell on the empty glass on the coffee table, with a small trace of smoothie at the bottom. Her lips tightened. "Oh, I see. Then this will be my breakfast."

Maya’s heart was wrecking inside her ribcage as she strode briskly out of the room, not sparing Dalton a glance. She was too upset.

*********

Dalton watched Maya rush out with a heavy heart. He knew he had messed up; he should have turned down Charlotte but he didn’t want to hurt her feelings.

"Are you okay? You look disturbed," Charlotte asked.

"I need to be at the office," Dalton said as he handed the cup of coffee back to Charlotte. "Thanks for the coffee and smoothie, but you don’t need to do that. It is Maya’s duty as my chef."

"Oh, I didn’t know. Did I offend her? She seemed upset," Charlotte said, looking remorseful.

Dalton couldn’t bring himself to lie, so he chose not to answer.

"I will see you later, Charlotte," he walked out of his room.

At the office, Dalton was distracted. Maya hadn’t replied to any of his messages; she was really upset with him.

The door burst open, and Dalton anticipated it would be Maya since it was lunchtime, but his face fell when he realized it was Aiden.

"Here is your lunch," Aiden dropped the insulated lunch box on the table.

"Where is Maya?"

Dalton asked.

"She mentioned that she is having a busy day at the restaurant, so she can’t come with me," Aiden replied.

Aiden narrowed his gaze at Dalton. "I translated that into girlfriend language: your girl is mad at you. What did you do?"

Dalton was silent.

"Ah, it’s Charlotte, right?"

"Why do you think Charlotte is the reason Maya is upset?" Dalton rumbled.

"I’m sure she is the problem. Your tone says it all. What happened?"

"Charlotte served me coffee and a smoothie before Maya could," Dalton tells Aiden, sounding remorseful.

"Oh, you screwed up, man. You should have refused that she-devil, Knowing Maya would soon be bringing you hers," Aiden scolds.

Dalton sighs in indignation. "I know. I just couldn’t refuse Charlotte."

Aiden huffed. "You’re no longer that 9-year-old kid whose father told him to take care of his adopted cousin. Charlotte is no longer a little girl; she is now a fully grown woman. Stop coddling her and learn how to say no to her."

"And you should also know, Maya was upset yesterday too," Aiden added. "You went out to a bar with a woman you’re not related to, and you came home very late. You committed two offenses; just imagine how Maya is feeling "

Dalton clenched his knuckles. He has really screwed up.

"Maya knows we aren’t related to Charlotte?"

Aiden nodded. "Yes, bro. I told her."

Dalton ran his hand through his hair, contemplating how to apologize to Maya.

"Flowers," he said aloud.

Dalton stood behind Maya’s door, holding a bouquet of pink tulips. He was nervous, and his hand was wavering as he knocked. He knocked for the fourth time before Maya finally opened the door. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

"How can I help you?" Maya asked in an indifferent tone.

Dalton took in her appearance; she was wearing cute pajamas with her hair pulled up, which made her look pretty and adorable. However, the expression on her face was cold.

"I’m sorry about yesterday and this morning," Dalton apologized as he handed the tulip flowers to Maya.

The coldness etched on Maya’s face melted slightly. "Beautiful flowers," she said, inhaling the fragrance, and a smile spread across her face. "You are forgiven."

Dalton felt his tension ease.

"I made a dinner reservation for us tomorrow at a restaurant, downtown. " Dalton informed her.

"Oh, nice!" Maya smiled, and it struck straight to Dalton’s heart. God, he loves this woman.

"Thanks for the flowers; I love them," Maya beamed.

"I’m glad you like them." Haven deserves a bonus for suggesting he choose these tulip flowers.

Maya opened the door wider, inviting him in.

Dalton was buzzing with joy inside; he was going to spend the night with his girl.
