The billionaire's only desire-Chapter 30: apology
Chapter 30: apology
Maya tightly clutched the food delivery bag draped over her shoulder as she walked through the maze garden at Dalton’s mansion. Her strides were quick and steady. She wished she could take a leisurely stroll to appreciate the maze, but the helicopter pilot was waiting for her in the fields.
The helicopter was hovering in the middle of the fields when she exited the maze.
A strong wind generated by the rotor blades of the helicopter gush through her, sending her hair and sundress flying.
She squinted her eyes at the pilot’s seat and noticed a man with blonde hair, instead of black. The pilot who picks her up every day has black hair. She narrowed her eyes as she walked closer to the helicopter, and the pilot’s face came into view. "Aiden?" She thought she was hallucinating, so she took another look. It was really him!
"What are you doing here, Aiden? Where is the pilot?" she shouted, her voice rising above the loud noise of the engine and rotor blades.
"I’m the pilot!" Aiden yelled back, trying to make himself heard amidst the noise.
Maya snorted in disbelief. "You’re joking, right?"
"No, come on board!" he urged, signalling .
"Absolutely not! I don’t want to die young! " Maya turned to leave.
"Suit yourself!" Aiden shrugged, ready to take off.
"Wait!" she yelled, stomping her feet. "Does Dalton know you’re the one flying me today?"
"Yes, now get in," Aiden said, offering his hand to help Maya climb on board.
He handed her a headset after she was seated.
He was wearing one himself.
Maya put on the headset, and Aiden took off. Soon, they were in the air, flying over the vast expanse of the thick woods. "Wow, the woods is huge, isn’t it?" Maya commented, communicating with Aiden through the headset. She looked out the window on her side with wide eyes. She is always amazed by how the woods appeared from the sky every time the helicopter flies over it .
"Yes, it’s big enough for me to kill someone and dump their body without leaving a trace," Aiden said deadpan. Maya slowly tore her eyes from the window and glared at Aiden. "This joke isn’t funny."
"It’s not a joke; I killed and buried someone there last Tuesday." Aiden’s tone was dead serious, and his eyes glinted with a murderous malice.
She swallowed hard as a chilling wave of fear washed over her. She knew he was crazy, but not crazy enough to kill people, right?
"Stop pulling my leg! Joking about killing people is not funny!" she shrieked at him.
Aiden laughed maniacally. "You are so clueless, Maya. That makes you cute. No wonder my brother is in love with you."
His last words made her flutter her lashes shyly. "What is it with you and River, thinking that your brother and I are romantically involved? We are just friends."
"Friends?" Aiden snorted. "Anyway, I give my approval."
Maya raised an eyebrow. "Your approval?"
"Yes, I think you would be good for my brother, He needs someone like you in his life" Aiden said, his voice heavy with emotion. "Dalton stopped smiling when he was ten years old. Promise me you will make him smile again."
Maya felt a deep ache in her chest for Dalton. What terrible experiences could a 10-year-old child endure that would made them stop smiling? She wondered anxiously. However, she didn’t pry; it was Dalton’s story to tell
"I promise," she assured Aiden, smiling warmly at him.
Aiden nodded. "Here," he said, throwing a key to her. Maya narrowed her eyes at the key. "What is this for?"
"It’s a car key," he replied. "I’m giving you a Lamborghini Revuelto to apologize for harassing you and acting like a pervert, the first time we met. I’m truly sorry for making you feel uncomfortable."
"Okay, I’m glad you’re finally sincerely apologising, " Maya said, feeling touched. "Apology accepted, but seriously, Aiden, you are a jerk. I should have kicked you in the groin for pulling me into your lap against my will." She glared at him fiercely.
"You are scary, Maya," Aiden said, pretending to shiver. "But you should know that I would never force myself on a woman. I was seriously off my antipsychotic medication, that is why I acted that way. I was just taunting you." He over-explained himself.
Maya patted his arm. "I believe you, we’re cool now, but I’m not accepting the Lamborghini." She thrust the key back to him.
Aiden threw the key back to her. "Keep it," he insisted.
"No, it’s an expensive car. I can’t,"
"It’s just a car; it’s nothing. I own thousands of cars all around the world," Aiden said smugly, reminding Maya that he owns a sports car company.
"It’s in one of my showrooms. You can come for it when you’re ready."
"Thank you," Maya said, even though she was not planning on ever driving that Lamborghini.
Minutes later, Aiden landed the helicopter on the rooftop of Dalton’s company skyscraper. He turned off the engine, hopped out, and helped Maya step out.
"Let me help you," Aiden said as he took the food delivery bag off her shoulder.
"Thanks," Maya said with a smile.
She took the lead as they entered a door leading into the building.
"Hi, Haven," Maya greeted Dalton’s young, beautiful secretary, who was seated at her desk outside Dalton’s office.
"Hey, Maya," Haven grinned at her. "I love your dress; it looks lovely on you."
"Thank you, you look good too," Maya smiled at her.
Aiden walked by without acknowledging Haven, his demeanour rude.
"Aiden Parks, I think you should return to prep school to learn what greeting means," Haven said loudly, scolding him as if she were a strict schoolteacher.
Aiden stopped in his tracks and glanced over his shoulder. "Good afternoon, Haven. Happy now?"
Haven smiled triumphantly. "Yes! Good boy."
A laugh burst from Aiden. "You are really something, Haven," he said as he strode into Dalton’s office.
Maya watched them, her fingers resting on her chin, a knowing smile on her face.
