After hanging up the phone, Song Qiao looked at her now darkened phone, feeling inexplicably anxious as her heartbeat escalated.
It wasn’t a happy sensation, but rather an uncontrollable anxious thumping in her chest. Glancing at her phone in her hand, she decided to make a direct call to Lu Jingchen.
It just so happened to be the end of the workday at CK Group, but Lu Jingchen had not gone out to eat. Instead, he ordered takeout through his assistant. If it weren’t for an arranged dinner with Song Qiao, he would typically have the assistant order takeout for him to eat in the office, rest briefly, and then continue working.
The phone buzzed atop the desk, and Lu Jingchen turned to look at the caller ID, noticing it was Song Qiao. A slight frown crossed his brows, but he still picked up the phone and slid his finger across the answer button to his ear.
The man didn’t speak. He leaned back in his chair and relaxed his body, the sudden release of tension from his habitually upright posture giving him a lazy feeling.
"Lu Jingchen," Song Qiao said, slowly walking out of the office with her phone, her face fraught with indecision.
"What’s the matter?" His low and slightly husky voice came through the phone, devoid of any background noise, clearly indicating he was in a quiet place.
After a moment’s contemplation, Song Qiao nevertheless voiced her concern, "Your father has someone call me. He wants to meet me. What do you think... I... should I go see him?"
Because of the previous incident, she had developed a sort of psychological fear towards Elder Lu, scared that if he asked her to leave Lu Jingchen and she refused, what if he couldn’t contain himself again and threw boiling water at her?
Her back injury had only just recently healed, and during the recovery, she couldn’t lie down to sleep and had to sleep face down, which after a while made her chest feel uncomfortably pressured. There was even one time when she was bathing and saw her chest... seemed like it got flattened.
She wasn’t well-endowed to begin with, and now it seemed even smaller, which really sent Song Qiao into inner turmoil.

Hearing that his father sought Song Qiao, Lu Jingchen’s eyes, which were half-closed a moment ago, snapped open, and a cold light flickered within them. Finally parting his thin lips, he instructed, "Wait for me at the company. Don’t go anywhere. I’ll come to pick you up before you leave."
Song Qiao was startled, clearly not expecting such a significant response from Lu Jingchen but after a moment, she nodded and agreed, "Okay."
She wasn’t brave enough to face Elder Lu on her own yet.
After all, she lacked confidence; their marriage to his son was not born of love to begin with. And since they both had an agreement from the start, she feared that she might inadvertently speak the truth if provoked.
If Lu Jingchen truly loved her, and she him, then facing Lu Tianming alone wouldn’t be impossible. Although without that confidence, she still had the courage if needed.
Hanging up the call, Song Qiao looked at her darkened phone, sighed, and followed Lu Jingchen’s arrangement, deciding against going downstairs and instead headed towards the restroom.
As for the person sent to fetch her, she would let them wait downstairs; she wasn’t planning to go down that quickly anyway.
Since it was after work hours, the restroom was not crowded, with only a few employees who ordered takeout instead of dining out.
As soon as she entered the restroom, Song Qiao suddenly felt an uncomfortable sensation in her stomach, as if a strong current was shooting downward, causing her face to pale. Without a second thought, she pulled a sanitary pad from her bag, pushed open an unoccupied stall, and went inside.
Surprisingly, restrooms are indeed the best place for gossip. Just as Song Qiao entered a stall, a few women came in. They weren’t there to use the facilities; rather, they chatted amid the sound of running taps.
"Did you guys read the newspaper? That Song Xi actually married the president of CK Group. My God, I thought I read it wrong this morning when I saw the paper," one of the women with a gentle voice broke the news first.
"I was shocked as well, but I didn’t see it myself. A colleague told me to read about it; she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her."
