The Billionaire's Hidden Affection-Chapter 392: Banquet at Hongmen 1_1
A knock echoed. She opened the door, surprised to see Huang Xiaojue standing at the entrance.
"Xiaojue, what brings you here?"
Huang Xiaojue held a large box, his face lit up with a smile. "Xixi, are you free tonight?"
"I’m free. What’s up?"
"Would you accompany me somewhere?"
She was taken aback, suddenly recalling the short, chubby Wang Xiaohao she had bumped into last time. She instinctively asked, "Do we have to go?"
Huang Xiaojue said amiably, "It’s just a small gathering."
She initially wanted to decline. But then she remembered how she and Huang Xiaojue had spent more time apart than together. Coupled with his mother’s constant bitter opposition, their relationship was already starting to crumble. Though she wasn’t keen on attending any social gatherings, she still braced herself and agreed.
She looked at the large box. "Xiaojue, what’s this?" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Huang Xiaojue opened the box. Inside was a lake-blue dress from a high-end brand and a pair of matching high heels.
"Xiaojue, why did you buy such an expensive dress again?"
"You don’t have many clothes as it is."
"Didn’t you buy me a very expensive set last time? I wore it once and then put it away, as I hardly ever need it."
"You can’t wear that same dress every time, can you? Xixi, you shouldn’t be so frugal."
She smiled sweetly, took the dress, and went into the bedroom to change. Looking at herself in the full-length mirror, she could hardly believe her eyes. Indeed, clothes make the man.
She slowly walked out. Huang Xiaojue had been idly flipping through some luxury leather goods magazines on the coffee table. Hearing her footsteps, he looked up, and his heart nearly stopped.
He had known her for almost ten years, from her blossoming girlhood to the present day. They had been through countless separations and reunions, yet seeing her so exquisitely dressed still made his heart pound uncontrollably.
His familiar, scorching gaze made her blush and her heart pound. She lowered her head. "Xiaojue, why are you looking at me like that?"
He suddenly pulled her into a tight embrace. His heart pounded as if it would burst from his chest, and his breathing became incredibly ragged. "Xixi, we must get married as soon as possible. Let’s register our marriage tomorrow, alright?"
She hugged him back, feeling dazed. To be properly engaged was to be a wife; to elope, even to marry, felt akin to becoming a concubine. Registering their marriage secretly behind their parents’ backs—she might never be able to hold her head high for the rest of her life.
"Xixi, once we register our marriage, you’ll move in with me..."
His hot breath on her neck felt like a searing iron, making her flush all over. He had urged her countless times. He was even more desperate to marry than she was. His proposal was sincere and flawless—yet she didn’t know how to respond and simply remained silent.
He keenly sensed her silence, and a sharper pain pierced his heart. He couldn’t help but secretly blame his mother. Every one of her attempts to make things difficult for Yan Xixi ultimately rebounded, making things difficult for him. Yet, if a man couldn’t even manage his own mother, how could he constantly expect his wife to be the one to compromise?
Just at that moment, his cell phone rang.
He glanced at the number, and his expression changed slightly. Yan Xixi immediately guessed it was his mother calling.
"Son, come home for dinner tonight."
"Mom, I have a social engagement tonight."
It was indeed his mother.
"What engagement? Can’t it be rescheduled? We have important guests at home tonight..."
"Mom, this engagement is very important. Xixi and I are going together..."
His mother’s voice immediately turned sharp. "Why are you taking Yan Xixi? Son, taking her will only bring you shame! Break up with her, I’m begging you! That filthy woman..."
