The Billionaire Twins Need A New Mommy!-Chapter 651: Dad
Jarvis’ entire world paused for a moment. Even his breathing stopped, something that had never happened in all his life. And in that standstill, he saw a spark in that small gap filled with darkness.
BANG!
At that moment, he knew the bullet would hit him. The angle, the location, and the distance were perfect for that shot.
No...
Jarvis flinched slightly as he felt something strike him. Lifting his arm to catch someone, his pupils constricted as he slowly gazed down.
The bullet didn’t hit him because...
"Gene—" his breathing stopped as he caught Gene’s body. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
In the next beat, a shout from the mercenaries echoed as they all aimed and rushed in Haji’s direction.
"Get him!"
As for Jarvis, he dragged Gene and took cover behind the truck.
"Gene," he breathed out, crouching down with the young man in his arms. His complexion had gone pale as he pressed a hand to Gene’s chest, blood seeping through his fingers.
Gene gasped for air, choking as he tried to speak. All he could think was that this was what it felt like—getting shot and dying.
The shot was fatal, meant to take Jarvis down instantly. But since Gene had jumped in to take the bullet for the man he had looked up to all his life, it saved Jarvis—but not him.
"You—you fool!" Jarvis huffed sharply, clasping Gene’s wound to stop the bleeding. "You didn’t have to—"
Gene grabbed Jarvis’s wrist, using his remaining strength to hold on. His eyes met Jarvis’s gaze, and for the first time, he saw Jarvis’s usual composure crack. The corners of Gene’s mouth curled upward as his eyes softened, his entire body relaxing as if preparing to surrender the last thread of his life.
Gulping despite choking, Gene studied Jarvis’ face and forced himself to speak.
"Da..."
"Don’t say anything," Jarvis said, removing one hand from the wound to press harder with the other. His bloodied fingers searched Gene’s pockets desperately. "I’m getting you out of here, Gene. You will not—"
"Da...d."
Jarvis paused, his eyes widening as he slowly met Gene’s gaze. The moment he did, all he saw was the peaceful smile on the young man’s face.
"Dad..." Gene said again, choking as he coughed up blood. "Dad."
I know, he thought.
I know you are my dad and... at least for the first and last time, I can call you that freely.
His soft eyes slowly dimmed as life drained from them, blood trickling down the side of his mouth. Yet the faint smile on his face remained even as his heart stopped beating completely, his life slipping away while looking at the man he had admired—and the man he had spent his life trying to please just to be acknowledged.
Jarvis stared into Gene’s lifeless eyes as the sounds of gunfire and shouting behind him grew muffled.
"Gene," he whispered, his hand still pressing on the wound before slowly lifting it. "So... you knew."
A shallow breath escaped his lips as he stared at the young man in silence. His mouth tightened as he reached up and gently closed Gene’s eyes.
Jarvis closed his own eyes as well and sighed heavily. When he reopened them, there was no lingering emotion left. He gazed down at Gene coldly, as if the young man—his own flesh and blood—had not sacrificed his life for him.
"I just wish you hadn’t known," he whispered. "But it seems Gehran had his own plans beforehand."
Because if there was only one person who could have known the truth about Jarvis and Gene’s connection, it would have been Gehran.
Although Jarvis felt little beyond brief shock and disbelief at Gene’s actions, he still carefully laid the young man down on the ground.
"Sir, this way!" two mercenaries called out as they watched Jarvis linger.
The others were already engaging Haji, and Jarvis could no longer see him. Even so, Haji’s allies were clearly fighting the rest.
After a moment, Jarvis rose to his feet, bending his knees to avoid exposing himself. Without looking back at the young man who had saved him, Jarvis rushed into the building with the two mercenaries.
The trio sprinted toward the emergency stairs, letting the chaos outside buy them time until...
BANG!
All three ducked and looked back, spotting a bullet embedded in the wall. The last mercenary ground his teeth.
"How did he get in so fast?!" he growled, turning to Jarvis and the driver. "Sir, I’ll try to hold him off!"
Jarvis and the driver nodded in understanding, jogging up the stairs to make use of the opening. But it didn’t take long before Haji’s voice echoed through the stairwell.
"Jarvis!!"
Jarvis stopped and instinctively leaned on the railing, only to pull back as a bullet struck it. He clenched his teeth, pulled out a rifle, and fired back.
"That pest," he spat, resuming his escape. He turned to the last mercenary. "Hold him off!"
"Yes, sir!" The driver moved aside, pressing himself into the corner of the landing, rifle raised and ready. For him, it was simple. There was only one way Haji could come from.
Soon, he caught sight of Haji and opened fire.
Haji ducked, taking cover behind the railing. The mercenary fired continuously, emptying his magazine to keep him pinned. Haji reached into his pocket and tossed something across the floor.
The mercenary instinctively fired at it, only to notice its small, spherical shape.
At first, he thought it was a grenade.
"Shit—"
BANG!
Using the moment of distraction, Haji exposed himself and took the man down with a single shot.
"It’s not a grenade, you fool," Haji huffed, glancing at the small ball near his feet—a round container where he kept his candies.
Haji exhaled sharply and peered over the railing, catching sight of Jarvis. Without wasting a second, he charged up the stairs, leaping over the fallen mercenary. His focus split between tracking which floor Jarvis had reached and running.
When he looked up again, he saw Jarvis turn into a hallway instead of heading straight for the rooftop.
"You’re not getting away this time," Haji huffed, picking up speed and stopping on the floor where he had last seen Jarvis.
Haji kicked the door open and froze when he heard a loud click behind him.
Jarvis, waiting behind the door, held a pistol directly at the back of Haji’s head.
