The Billionaire Twins Need A New Mommy!-Chapter 584: They Found Us
[First Street]
"Ransom, are you guys alright over there?"
Ransom’s thoughts halted as he heard Izu’s voice in his earpiece. He instinctively pressed the device, nodding.
"Yeah," he cleared his throat, watching as the drunken Long kept chugging from his flask while telling others to stay in the corner of the massive underground place.
"We’re alright," he breathed out. "Better... than expected."
His eyes scanned the surroundings. If he didn’t know better, he would think he was on a hospital floor. A legit one.
"Florida is just helping the others," he added. "But we’re fine. The Madam is right. It’s... it’s right that we went here."
Admitting that somehow chipped away another piece of doubt Ransom had toward Lola. Thinking about it, it was the same with how she got information about the old granny and Gigante, and then—even this place.
Because of her, they were still alive.
To be precise, they weren’t just alive, but they had made a lot of progress and were still alive.
"Ransom!" Florida’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts. "Need help here!"
"Uh—yeah!" Ransom rushed to Florida, eyes falling on the medical equipment beside the table. "Let me."
Florida and some of the men with them stepped back, allowing Ransom to attach medical equipment to one of the Bellemonte patients. The two patients had just gone through surgery, but with this equipment, they could check their vitals and determine whether they were stable.
After all, Ransom had only based his assessment on their complexion earlier.
But as Ransom worked on one patient, Florida turned and caught the drunken Long idling near the other. Seeing that Long was holding some of the medical equipment they were about to use, Florida stepped forward.
"Wait!" Florida raised his voice, stopping everyone—including the drunkard. "Uh... what are you doing?"
Long turned to them, blinking so sluggishly he looked like he might collapse at any moment. But before anyone could speak, Ransom did.
"Do you know how to... do it?"
Long blinked and nodded. "I may look like this, but I’m a doctor."
"You are?" the men from Gigante blurted out in unison.
Long wasn’t well known, but he was definitely someone people had heard of. After all, who wouldn’t know about the drunkard of this ghost town? Everyone else had left, but this fellow stayed behind, wasting his life away.
So, hearing that he was a doctor came as a surprise.
"Yes, I am!" Long nodded. "In my previous life. That’s what my grandma said—that I might be the reincarnation of the greatest doctor of Ravah."
Hearing that, everyone frowned deeply. Others wore sour expressions at his words.
"For a second, I believed him."
"Don’t worry," Long said as he resumed his work, inserting an IV needle into the patient with a flick of his hand. "I don’t carry that piece of card people call a license, but I’ve done this a million times."
Everyone fell silent, watching Long do what he had to do. Just as Florida stepped forward to stop him, Ransom raised a hand.
"Florida, wait—" Ransom paused, studying Long’s actions. "Let him be."
"But—"
"He knows what he’s doing," Ransom said without taking his eyes off the drunkard. "And he’s really good at it."
Even Ransom would need time to insert that needle properly, but Long flicked his hand and nailed it. As for the other equipment, Long knew exactly where to place them and how to use them.
Then again, this underground hospital was something Long had been watching over.
"Are you sure?" one of the townsfolk asked, and Ransom nodded. "But he’s drunk."
"Which makes it more amazing," Ransom murmured before returning his focus to his patient. "I’m saying this as an experienced professional. He’s doing fine—better than most I know."
Silence followed Ransom’s remark as everyone focused on their tasks. Others stared at him briefly before turning their attention back to Long, who was just as busy.
Florida took a few steps back and thought about it. His eyes darted between everyone until he leaned against the wall.
For a while, the silence underground was palpable. No one spoke until the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor echoed. Then one of the men from Gigante, who had been quiet in the corner, glared at Long.
"You have this place... and all this equipment and medicine..." The man couldn’t hide his dismay at the thought that had been swirling in his head since seeing the facility. "...and yet, you chose to keep it a secret."
Slowly, he rose to his feet. "Do you have any idea how many lives you could have saved if you opened this place to others? My wife was sick, but because of the lack of medicine and help... she eventually died."
"..." Long paused for a second and glanced at him. He showed no emotion aside from indifference before continuing his work.
"Long!" the man stepped forward, only to be stopped by others. "Let me go! I need to talk to him!"
"Don’t—" one resident stopped him, shaking his head. "It’s not his fault."
"Not his fault?" the man scoffed. "How is it not his fault when he had this place and these resources?!"
"Because if he opened it to everyone, do you think it would be used for us?" another resident said, standing near Florida. He watched the group turn to him. "If this place were revealed, do you think the governor wouldn’t seize it?"
Nothing followed but silence.
The man confronting Long clenched his teeth. His eyes burned, but he understood. He always had. It was just that losing his wife so helplessly due to a lack of care made discovering a real hospital under the bar feel like a slap in the face.
In the end, he lowered his head, fists clenched. Those who had stopped him frowned as well, slowly letting him go.
"It’s alright," one man said, squeezing his shoulder. "Your wife is in a good place now. A better one than... this territory."
Painful, but true.
Anywhere was better than Ravah. Even hell.
Florida and Ransom stayed silent, glancing at Long, who didn’t react. The latter said nothing. He simply continued working.
They didn’t wonder why.
How could Long answer that?
This place existed for a reason, but they could never truly use it. Even if Long revealed it, those in power would seize it for themselves.
"Ransom, Florida." Izu’s voice suddenly echoed in their ears. "If you’re done there, meet us in the main city. We’re already on the way."
"Sure—" Florida began, but then he heard a noise above them.
Everyone paused and slowly looked up at the high ceiling. Their brows knitted. Hearing sounds above them was unexpected, especially considering they arrived via a walkway-like transport system.
"What’s above us?" Florida asked, prompting everyone to look at Long.
Long blinked and scratched the back of his head. "The street," he said before walking to a drawer. He pulled one open and took something out.
Curious, Florida, and a few of the men from Gigante approached. Standing beside Long, they saw a device—a large tablet—displaying the streets of District Five.
In it, multiple vehicles rolled through the district, some already ransacking the ghost town.
"Those are..." one resident held his breath, eyes widening. "...it’s them. The mercenaries."
Then Long whispered,
"They found us."
