The Billionaire Stands Up for Me-Chapter 160: Eating and Sleeping Together
I held the phone tightly to my ear, listening to his deep, warm voice echoing beside my ear, as if a warm current continuously flowed into my heart.
That longing was amplified, buoyed by the warmth.
I gazed out the window, thinking about the scene I just witnessed, I couldn’t help but say, "Daniel Carter, I just saw a couple passionately kissing on the street and suddenly thought of you. I miss you so, so much..."
I couldn’t see his expression upon hearing this, but I clearly felt his breathing quicken, and my heartbeat followed suit.
I don’t know how I had the nerve to say such cheesy words.
But I couldn’t help it, it just slipped out.
"Lily, Lily—" He kept calling my name, I knew he was excited, wishing he could sprout wings and fly over immediately. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
I also really wanted to see him, but I remembered what Jessica Sawyer said, so reason ultimately triumphed over impulse.
"Daniel Carter, listen to me, you can’t come over to see me, I’m really busy these days, even if you came I wouldn’t have time to accompany you, it would just distract me—got it?"
I didn’t want the Carter Family to feel like their son was enchanted by me, seeing me as an imaginary enemy.
But if I said it like this, he would definitely want to come even more.
So, I could only use work as an excuse.
But in reality, I am indeed very busy, as our brand’s show is at the forefront, starting in a couple of days.
"I won’t interrupt your work, I’ll just be there as your handbag holder." Daniel Carter still tried to negotiate.
"That won’t do either."
"But you just said you miss me."
"We’ve been apart for a few days, it’s only natural to miss you. Once I’m done with work, I’ll come back first thing." I tried to console him while calculating the schedule, "Around the sixth, I’ll be done here."
"But by the time you come back, I have to go to work."
"..." I frowned, also knowing it was indeed tricky.
The call wasn’t over yet when I arrived at the hotel.
Voices came from his end, probably someone was looking for him. I took the opportunity to say, "You go ahead and get busy, I also need to get off the car, I brought quite a few things."
"Alright, I’ll video you later."
"Okay."
After hanging up, I called out to Cherry in the passenger seat, and we got out of the car together.
In the elevator, Cherry leaned over and asked confusingly, "Ms. Lily, why don’t you let Mr. Carter come and accompany you? Even though you’re busy with work, you still have to eat and sleep, right? At least during those times, you could be with him."
Saying the last sentence, Cherry was all animated and a look of ambiguity was on her face.
I glanced at her, teasingly saying, "This little girl seems so simple, but her mind is rather complex."
"No, I’m just very pure."
I felt dizzy and leaned against the elevator, remaining silent for a while before speaking, "I have to get used to days without him, even if it’s not now, it will be in the future—consider it an early experience."
Cherry looked at me with a serious yet puzzled expression, "Ms. Lily, what are you talking about? Are you drunk?"
"Yeah, sort of..."
Back in the room, I washed up quickly and went to sleep.
During my days in Veyrona, my sleep had never been good.
Adding to that, after Jessica Sawyer’s words, my sleep quality worsened even more.
I realized that I am falling more and more in love with Daniel Carter and increasingly afraid of losing him.
In the past, I thought we would have a passionate romance, and when we had to part ways, I would walk away gracefully, burying all the beautiful memories.
But now I understand, I can’t do it.
Come the day we part, I would be in excruciating pain, far more than when I was heartbroken by Adrian Gordon’s betrayal.
The effects of alcohol lingered, and before I knew it, I finally fell asleep completely.
So much so that I didn’t hear the phone ring twice until the loud knocking on the door woke me up.
I woke up groggily, looked at the time, it was evening.
But I had the afternoon off today, so sleeping until now was fine. But what was the rush that they were looking for me?
I went to open the door, and standing outside were Cherry and Eric Shaw.
The two of them saw me and simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief, "Ms. Lily, it’s good that you’re alright. Mr. Carter has been trying to call you but couldn’t get through, he thought something happened to you, so he quickly called me and Mr. Shaw asking us to check on you."
I was still a bit muddled, but hearing this cleared my mind somewhat, I explained, "I’m okay, I had some drinks at lunch, it was stronger than I thought—it’s nothing, you guys go rest, I’ll call him back."
"Alright then, call me if you need anything." Cherry reminded me and left with Eric Shaw.
Back in the room, I grabbed my phone and noticed the time difference, it was already early morning back home.
But since it’s New Year’s Eve, he’s probably still up for the vigil.
I quickly returned the call.
"Hello!" Daniel Carter answered, his voice obviously tense, "What happened to you? I called you five times and you didn’t pick up, I thought you were in danger."
"I’m sorry, I had a reunion lunch with colleagues at noon, and I drank a bit too much, so after our call, I fell asleep as soon as I got back to the hotel room."
I hurried to explain, afraid he’d be upset, and couldn’t help coaxing, "It was my fault, next time I’ll let you know before I sleep, so you don’t worry."
Daniel Carter didn’t dwell on it but asked, "Since you went there, are you having trouble sleeping again?"
After we were together, he once found sleeping pills at my place.
I had to tell him that I had trouble sleeping and resorted to sleeping pills when it was severe.
He frowned at that time, worried, and advised me to adjust my mindset and try to wean off the pills.
I also know that medicines have side effects, and after his solemn reminder, I was indeed trying to quit the medication.
"Yes, I have a bit of trouble sleeping in unfamiliar places, but once I fall asleep, it’s okay." Afraid he’d worry and insist on coming over, I quickly added.
Daniel Carter was silent for a moment, indeed bringing up the old topic again, "I’m not too busy these days, let me come over to accompany you."
"Dan—"
"Lily Miller, I’ll just treat it as a vacation, is that not okay?"
He interrupted me, his tone showing displeasure.
I held the phone, momentarily at a loss for words.
Daniel Carter might have realized his tone was too harsh, he paused and softened, "I’m not blaming you, I know what’s on your mind, you’re worried about me spending the new year abroad with you and my family having opinions. Don’t worry, I’m a grown man, I’m free to do what I want."
I pouted, thinking that since I couldn’t stop him, I could only hope for his arrival.
"Alright then, I’ll wait for you."
"Okay, I’ll let you know once I book the tickets."
After hanging up, I fell back softly onto the bed, scrolling through missed calls on my phone, all from him.
He must have been terribly anxious.
Let him come then...
Later that day, he sent me his flight information.
A ticket for the afternoon of the first day of the new year, a twelve or three-hour flight, by the time he arrives in Veyrona, my show will just be starting.
I definitely won’t be able to accompany him.
But thinking that he could be there in person to appreciate my work, I was filled with anticipation.
