The Alpha's Villainess Wife-Chapter 39: She’s Your Mate
"He’s partially out of danger for now, Mr. Basti," the doctor, an alpha, said to Caius who had his gaze on Yuri who was unconscious on the bed. "We’ll have to monitor him to see how things go."
"When is he going to wake up?" he asked.
The doctor went silent.
Caius’s hands balled by his sides and so did the veins at his neck pop. "I asked, when is he going to wake up?"
"I don’t...know. But we are hoping that he will," the doctor tried to mellow his words as much as he could. "Mr. Basti, he got shot in his chest, specifically in his heart. It’s already a miracle that he survived it. A shot at the heart barely has a survival rate, his heart bled a lot, he lost a lot of blood, so let’s be happy a little bit that he’s still breathing."
He added, "I don’t know when he will wake up from his coma. It could take a month or more, but at least he’s breathing. That means there is a chance."
Caius stared at him and slowly shifted his gaze to Yuri. He had so many tubes connected to him, the man looked so pitiful and he hated to see him in such a condition.
He didn’t respond to the doctor but instead turned and left the ward, shutting the door behind him.
He stormed his way down the hallway and halted at the bench where both Malakai and Eve were seated, asleep with her head resting against his shoulder. It was past ten p.m. after all.
He ran his fingers through his hair and walked off.
The next place he found himself was at the rooftop of the hospital where he stood staring into nothing. He was angry, but he didn’t even know who at.
A soft breath fled his nose and he walked to the edge and sat down, his legs hanging out. He took out the pack of cigarettes he’d grabbed and just before he could light it, a voice startled him to a stop.
"What are you doing?"
"Fuck off, Malakai, I don’t have time for this."
"Push me away again, and I’ll smack my fist into your face, Caius." Malakai stormed toward him and proceeded to sit next to him.
Caius glanced at him, raising a brow. "I’d rather not talk to anyone right now." He lit the cigarette.
"I thought you quit."
"Yes, I did. But what do you want me to do? I need it right now."
Malakai contemplated smacking the cig out of his hand, but he took a deep breath, asking, "Is Yuri okay?"
"As much as he can be," Caius responded. "He’s in a coma, and um...no one knows when he will possibly wake up. It could take a month or more."
"I’m sorry."
"What are you sorry for?"
"I know he’s a close friend to—"
"He’s my best friend, Malakai. The only friend I have. My one and only." His expression tightened. "And he’s in there, in a state I’ve never seen him in before. I don’t even know if he’ll survive this and there is nothing I can do."
"It’s all my fault," Malakai muttered. "I never should have gotten him involved in any of this."
Caius blew out a puff of smoke. "No, it’s not. Yuri knew what he was getting into. I knew what I was getting into when I had him work for you. He was just that capable and I was always worried about you. I knew he’d be able to protect you even if you think you don’t need it just because you are the strongest alpha to exist. So, no, it’s not your fault. It’s no one’s fault, after all, who would have known what would happen?"
"You don’t mean that, do you?" Malakai questioned. "You blame yourself, it’s clear in your tone."
Caius looked away, completely irritated. "It is my fault. I got him into this mess."
"Besides," he added. "Either Eve or you would have gotten hurt if he didn’t step in. Eve is pregnant, she’s your wife...your mate."
The golden pairs of eyes locked on him immediately.
"How...? How do you know?"
The man rolled his eyes. "How couldn’t I have figured it out? Have you seen how territorial you are over her? For a woman you just married in barely a month, you are way too possessive—obsessed if I dare exaggerate. You looked at me like you would skin me alive if I touched her. No alpha would be that possessive over an omega that isn’t their mate. Some are not even this way about their mate."
Malakai couldn’t respond. What would he even say?
All he could do was take a deep breath and slowly reach out his arm, curling it around Caius and making him drop his head against his shoulder.
"I will not lie that I’m not glad Eve isn’t the one in that emergency bed. But...it still doesn’t make it right," he said. "Yuri shouldn’t be in that bed, fighting for his life."
"If I’d just paid attention." Caius relaxed his head against his shoulder, appreciating the comfort. "Don’t tell Eve, though."
"Why?" Malakai asked. "I think she’d want to know how he’s doing."
"It’s not going to do her any good. She’s only going to blame herself, I mean, a big part of all this is her fight. I don’t think it’ll be a good idea if she starts thinking people are getting hurt because of her. Don’t forget she’s pregnant—emotional stress isn’t what she needs."
Malakai didn’t disagree. But he chuckled. "You know a lot about pregnant omegas. Are you sure you don’t have one hidden because you’re afraid of our mother?"
Caius groaned. "I’m not loving an omega or getting one pregnant unless she’s my mate. And since I haven’t found my mate, no, I don’t have any hidden. Idiot."
"My body will only be for my mate, the omega who will be the mother of my kids. So no, I’m not getting into some sort of relationship or giving affection to anyone. Not that you would understand that."
"What the hell does that mean?" Malakai snapped.
Caius cocked a brow at him. "Are you going to lie that you never got into some sort of relationship with an omega, even if not emotional, before you met Eve?"
"That’s..." His hands balled into fists. "I have somewhere to be."
He shoved his head off his shoulders and rose to his feet, turning and stalking off to leave the rooftop.
Caius smirked to himself and shook his head as he blew off a cloud of smoke.
