Chapter 49: Crazy things.

~Dahlia’s POV~

"The Alpha has indeed lost his memory! He could not recognize any of us by the time he woke up!" Elder Samwell’s voice tore through my thoughts and I looked up just in time to see him conversing with two women I didn’t know, his rotund belly bouncing with each word he spoke.

One of the women pulled a stray strand of her silvery hair that had escaped the bun at the nape of her neck behind her ear and looked up at Elder Samwell, a mixture of confusion and worry lining her features.

She shook her head. "Are you sure? You know it’s wrong to spread misinformation about the Alpha?"

"I’m as sure as death and taxes!" Elder Samwell responded quickly, sounding more excited than worried, "...or we can make a bet. Ten shillings goes to whoever is right by the end of the day!"

The woman gasped, her wide eyes portraying my own surprise.

And I turned away from the group as I headed out of the palace gates with Beta Orion’s manor in mind as my destination. At least with him I wouldn’t get scraps of information from someone who seemed too happy with this new terrible news... Moreover, I could also get to see my child too.

As I trudged along the dusty road, the sun beating down on my skin and the skirt of my layered dress gathered firmly in my hand, I noticed some lanterns scattered here and there over taverns, over people’s carriages and even over some people’s shops. They were all not lit but put there all the same like some decoration of some sort, and I shook my head against them, wondering how many festivals these people observe until I remembered the Festival of Lights!

It had to be it!

The lanterns, the candles, the fiery torches burning in strategic places in the streets, their wild smoke almost suffocating us passersby... all made sense now.

The festival was supposed to be held yesterday or two days ago— I am not so sure. But with the array of strange events happening around the pack, it had been forgotten... apparently, not really.

My eyes caught sight of Beta Orion’s manor not so far off, and suddenly the thought of learning about the Alpha’s predicament felt too heavy to bear. However, I tried to placate myself with the fact that I would get to see my daughter, and with a deep sigh, I made my way to the gates.

The security greeted me with flourish. This was the only part of this pack where I was ever treated as an equal. The guards usually never question me or sneer down at me like in other places— mainly due to the fact that my daughter was being treated as one of the ladies of the house here.

I made my way into the house with a mixture of panic and something else gnawing at my insides when suddenly a sharp voice from a corner snapped me out of my reverie. I turned in the direction of the sound and my stomach dropped when I saw Ms Jennifer standing tall with a frown etched deep into her face.

And she was talking to... Amara!

My baby!

For the first time in my goddess fucking life, I damned consequences. I damned my fear for her and pack hierarchy, and like a charging bull, I rushed over, ready to strike her if I got even the tiniest whiff of bullying from her but came to an abrupt stop when I heard her say to Amara;

"Your Zareeq is dead."

A sob escaped Amara’s lips just as fury surged through my bones. She hadn’t come here to physically bully Amara but to do it emotionally, and in anger, I pulled my daughter to my side with so much force, my baby stumbled and then I turned to face Jennifer.

I snarled; "Don’t you think that information is none of my baby’s business?"

She smiled. "Oh, it is, especially as she’d been literally inseparable from him in the past week!"

"And you’ve been clinging to his groins for as long as my mama named me ’Dahlia’, why don’t you seem as distraught as—"

"Dahlia, Jennifer...?" Beta Orion’s voice suddenly interrupted me before I could say something I may live to regret. I looked up just then to see him cocking a curious eyebrow at me, a bemused expression on his face. "What’s this?" He asked, but I didn’t respond. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Ms Jennifer jumped at him, flashing a dark smile at me before she rushed; "This slave has grown wings! She was talking back at me and was about to insult me before you walked in!"

Beta Orion said nothing. He simply smiled. I, on the other hand, stifled my laughter.

"That’s exactly what happened Orion! I’m not making it up!" She continued, and it wasn’t until then that he turned to me, the smile still dancing across the corners of his mouth.

"Dahlia, go into the house and wait for me. I’d like to have a serious conversation with Her Majesty here." He said slowly, his voice devoid of any emotion.

His words made Ms Jennifer smile sheepishly and then she cast a devious wink at me before spinning on her heels and walking in the opposite direction.

That was my cue to get moving.

I grabbed Amara’s hands and began to whisk her into the house but not before I heard Jennifer’s last words. She said; "When we become Alpha and Luna, the first thing I’ll do is kick that pest and her daughter out of this pack!"

I froze.

Alpha and Luna?

Beta Orion and Ms Jennifer?

My breath caught in my throat as the things that implied hit me and I shivered as a sudden worry for Alpha Zarek enveloped me.

What was happening to him?

Was he truly mindless?

These thoughts concerning Ms Jennifer plagued my mind so badly that I didn’t notice when Amara left my side. I didn’t even notice that a few minutes had flown past until the familiar scent of Beta Orion hit my nostrils.

I looked up just in time to see him by the doorway, his eyes dark and fastened on me in a way that made me squirm in my seat.

I bowed. "Beta, is anything the matter?"

"No, Dahlia..." he drawled, taking his time to slither into the room with his eyes still fixated on me. "The Alpha has lost his mind and now I’m being pressured to take up his throne."

The way he said those words held a tinge of sadness in its undertone, but I couldn’t be certain, seeing as his body said otherwise.

"That’s some news." I murmured, unsure of what to say. "Will you do it?" I asked, and at that, he sighed, his eyes downcast.

"I may have to... but I want you to do something for me first."

"Which is?" I asked, shifting uncomfortably in my seat. I didn’t like the sound of this. At all.

"Marry me, Dahlia."

I froze.

Oh holy chicken soup, not this again!
